  • A change to my original plan. In this video, I talk about using an auto guider and Periodic Error Correction to nail your telescope's motion to the stars, and get long exposure times for your astrophotography.

Tonight I was able to calibrate my PHD software (and yes, setting North for the Dec is a golden tip!) and I just cannot stop smiling. Amazing pictures are possible from an urban area with the shutter up to 3-5 minutes open, it is truly amazing and it actually feels like you are traveling through all the galaxies and startclusters yourself. Hi Forrest, new to astronomy viewing as a whole and even more so with astrophotography and your series has made it really enjoyable and engaging to learn, even if I don't have the proper equipment.
All I have at the moment is a 1000k fL 127mm telescope with its non eq mount, finder scope and the 25mm lens that came with it along with a 15mm lens I bought and phone mount. It's been super fun trying astrophotography with the relative stone age gear I have.
I've decided to start saving up to get the same mount as yours. You've become a really big motivator and have my undying thanks.
See you in part 4, Mr. Tanaka.

But your presentation is so thorough and so clear that, for me, it makes it the best introduction to the subject. Thanks Mr Tanaka, and I eagerly await part 4 and all your future astrophotography videos!

Mr Tanaka, thank you for this very well done tutorial! I was contemplating buying an off axis mount instead of using a guide scope. But your warning about the potential difficulties of that arrangement made perfect sense to me. I have been fiddling with optics for a good part of my life, starting with my first telescope in my early teens, and I am it exactly a Spring Chicken these days! :) So, I thought your assessment of the off axis arrangement was very good
And I thought your very clear and informative, "fine pointers" and tips on using the auto-guiding software, and how to fine tune the auto guider's tracking, were very well presented, and extremely helpful.
I am looking forward to doing some of these things very soon, using tutorials like this one especially to help me figure out what system is best for my needs.
This tutorial s so much better than most of them I have seen, because in the ones I have seen so far about auto guiding, they just mostly stand in front of a telescope and tell you how it is supposed to work. So this video was "light years" :) better than any others I have seen!
Thank you so much again! This was sooo awesome!
P.S. And I love your dark site etiquette section, and also your "quiet night" :) voice throughout the night part of this video.

  • @31bluenose

Very useful Forrest and thanks for the great video. As a keen astronomer, with some experience of astro imaging, your video explains what some might say is a difficult skill. Auto guiding can be hard to get right and subscribers should know that they will get some failures early on, but with the right hardware, software and a ton of patience, the results can be amazing. I'm sure the next part will cover the magic of processing the images. The Ring Nebula is a good target, but at this time of the year, it's not going to be high in the sky. The Orion Nebula is a good target to go after in the winter.

You're a talented knowledge presenter. Thanks for the really good and compact explanations and examples which helped me a lot in the understanding and selection of the right tube and mount. Keep on going with the good work! Greetings from Germany!

Wonderful videos for an astrophotography beginner! Everything is precise and clear, pedagogy is high, in one single word THANKS for sharing that content! I am looking forward for the next part 4! ... Please, hurry, we need that 4th part!!!
I am in fact looking to buy my first equipment but my budget is low so I think about the Celestron Nexstar 6'' and as understood, I must think about buying an extra equatorial mount. JLouis

Excellent as always, Forrest! You should consider bundling all of your segments and selling a DVD. Perhaps one of the big manufacturers (I.e. Celestron, Meade, etc.) could underwrite you and include your DVD with any new OTA purchase...?

This is great! thank you so much. been doing unguided shots with my CPC925 so far, which works if you take insane amounts of pics and scrap the bad ones... but guiding DEF is the next step.. oh and an GEM mount..
