I do not own this song :)
LYRICS:
I never meant to cause you pain
My burden is the weight of a feather
I never meant to lead you on
I only meant to please me, however
And then you tell me "Boy, we can do much more together."
I'm nothing but a selfish man
I'm nothing but a privileged peddler
And did you think I'd stay the night
And did you think I'd love you forever
And then you tell me "Boy, we can do much more together."
I gotta tell you "Girl, I want nothing less than pleasure."
I gotta tell you "Boy, we made such a mess together."
i can't go for five minutes without this song
@birds they're having withdrawals XD
My only complaint about this song is its not long enough
"...and did you think I'd love you forever?"
That line really gets me.
A crushing piece of catharsis after having ended a long term relationship. I don't regret anything, but many times I wonder if I'm being selfish, and sometimes I think the weight I carried that lead me to end things for us could never be as heavy as the weight I gave them as I left. It's hard to listen to Sufjan sing "Did you think I'd love you forever?" without wincing a little bit.
Still it's something that had to happen, I couldn't keep pretending, that would only make more pain for both of us. I'm glad we ended on good terms, and I know we'll both move on and find people better suited for us. We both deserve nothing less than pleasure.
Still, we made such a mess together. It was really beautiful.
This song is so beautiful to me but the way i hear the lyrics makes me so sad. he seems remorseful for leading them on, causing them pain, being selfish, but at the same time he accepts those traits and tries to move on even though they still exist and could potentially still cause pain. He apologizes but reaffirms those faults, while trying to make the relationship work. It seems doomed to fail, but the feelings he expresses will always be there
it’s been years, and i still love this song as much as i did as a 14 year old. thank you, sufjan.
So beautiful... he definitely channels the souls of Elliott Smith and Nick Drake in this three minutes.
i think it's hard to acknowledge when relationships end, especially when one clearly wishes to move on and the other is begging them to stay. pleasure principal nurtures my heart like a long needed closure, a long needed hug from a close friend. it sucks because sometimes, you wont always love forever. you wont always love the person you swore to love forever. but it's good to acknowledge that you loved when you did. the awkwardness of announcing you're leaving a relationship when mentally, emotionally you have already left.
This resonates with me 😭
its me😭
This is such a crushing ending to an album of structured emotion...
Thank you. I love the entire song, but it's great to have it sectioned out for sharing purposes. Some people just can't handle the pure and painfully perfect whole that is Sufjan. AT least not at first. ♥
and then you tell me boy
I think this part it's called "Pleasure Principle"
"boy we made such a mess together"
One bottle of malbec later and here we are.
weight of a feather against the weight of a heart
"Girl I want nothing less than pleasure."
imo his best song
i love impossible soul, but mainly this part and part 1
sufjan's singing is angelic🤤
so simple... so beautfiul... simple simply beautiful!
I wasn't really a fan of Age of Adz. To me, Sufjan's voice was always meant for these types of songs. But Iove his attempts at trying something new. This was my favorite song on the album.
Same
@Ryan Smith facts
I didn't like it at first either. But it definitely grew on me
"I walked" was it for me
Suffering. Unbearable agony, perhaps.
Absurdly good.
Pure bliss
I can't describe how much euphoria I'm feeling.
Thank you so much for putting this up!
i really love that part of the song , thanks !
I don't think Futile Devices sounds much like the rest of Age of Adz either, though
Same
Also the end of the title track
Thank you for doing this.
thank you SO much!
mi historia.
Interesting how the last verse is “I gotta tell ya/ Boy, we made such a mess together.” Makes u wonder if he’s talking to himself or another man
he's gay
I think that line is from the perspective of the woman he speaks to in the beginning of the beginning.
1. bump
2. can someone please mash this with "Julia"
I quite like this one
This is the pleasure principle

Para parallels
eu deixaria de lado cada uma das virtudes que me fazem ser quem eu sou só pra ter uma pessoa que fizesse eu realmente acreditar que sou amado
this could also be the theme song for when modern slavery ends, but it is not mainy that
?????
:D
Not true. Your words are futile devices.
