This is a great series and an episode! Can someone please decipher what Jeff said at 6:30? Was it “-9 with a dim button in”? So, what I understood is that he basically listens to mixes he works on at -9 dB? If I would turn down the master and stereo faders to -9 dB, would I achieve the same result? Thanks in advance!
Hi there. It means that when he is working, he is always listening to the same volume coming out of his speakers through his audio interface which is -9db PLUS the dim value. Ok now what does that mean? Well, when you play any kind of audio (whether it's a mix you are currently working or any audio source from your computer) to reach your speakers it needs to be sent to the speakers by an audio interface. That said interface has a maximum output of -0 dB. Unless your speakers have volume knobs (and, 99.9% of the time, even then), you are always attenuating that output (you never play -0 dB unless you want to go deaf). His loudness of choice is -9 dB (which is 9 dB quieter then the maximum the audio interface can send to the speakers) PLUS the dim amount he has chosen as a dim state. Dim means it will attenuate your current output level by however much you have set it to (so you can, I don't know, say something to somebody in the room and go back to listening the recording session you are currently working on louder with a click of a single button). You might like -12 dB, someone might like -17.5 dB. It doesn't matter. So, if Jeff's dim is set at, lets say -15 dB, that means that he is listening to the work he is doing at -9 dB + - 15 dB which is -24 dB compared to the maximum output of his audio interface. I hope this was helpful and not too confusing ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
