Something really does not jive with the economic data. How could a country that has been growing at 6% per year over the last 20 years still be so poor that people are still going hungry. Using simple compounding, the people should be three times as wealthy as 20 years ago. There is no way the growth rate published by the government is correct.

A very correct assessment. India's sports landscape is often marked by inconsistencies and challenges.A notable example was the disqualification of Vinesh Phogat due to weight restrictions. The ensuing public outcry, including involvement from high-level officials, raised questions about the country's approach to sports governance. While such incidents highlight a desire for success, they also underscore the potential for political interference and a culture that may sometimes prioritize results over strict adherence to rules. This can be particularly problematic in international sports, where strict regulations and fair play are paramount.
A veery big thanks for the presentation. I was wondering why you have not come up with your presentation. When it came it is a masterpiece as usual. This time it really excellent.
Excellent video with hard hitting points. The problem is that we know all of it but forget it till the end of the next Olympics. Kerala had a wonderful junior atheletic program going. Ukraine has always been good at sports. Don’t see why you are surprised. All the Soviet Union countries are good in sports. Iran is majorly only good in the combat sports, but they are good enough to win gold there. Botswana won their first medal this time.
I think because of her, they dropped breakdancing from future Olympics. 😂 And hopefully we won't have any more purple people competing in future Olympics either.
The disparity in rewards for Indian athletes and cricketers is staggering. While cricketers like Rishab Pant, who received top-notch care and support after an accident, and the winning World Cup cricket team, which received a whopping Rs 5 crore each, are handsomely rewarded, our Olympic athletes have never seen more than Rs 25 lakhs, highlighting the vast gap in recognition and support. This contrast underscores the need for a more equitable distribution of resources and incentives to encourage and nurture talent across all sports, not just cricket.
Children need to eat red meat if we have any qualms about making it big in athletics, just because Edwin Moses was a vegetarian that doesn't mean others can do the same and become world champions. Nutrition is a fundamental aspect of sports.
But I thought we are Vishwaguru? Snark apart, the point you make about following rules is spot on. In a land where jugaad is at the center of all pursuits, excelling without it is an alien idea. I saw a Chinese political commentator sum up India and the feeling many Chinese have about India quite well. He said India is a once great nation with unlimited future potential still going through their own Centuries of Humiliation. The Olympics are just a symptom of the problem. Once India finally breaks free of its centuries of subjugation and exploitation by the West and their proxies, and then enters a period of nation rejuvenation, the Olympic medals will naturally come.
India will never perform better unless we get rid of love for cricket. To us any cricket action is a world record. Thank God sporting nations do not play cricket or else we will be the last team in cricket too like hockey now.
Poor comment. First of all, India won consecutive bronze medals in hockey, won Asian championships undefeated and Asian games undefeated. We are in the top 5 in hockey and will soon rise. Do you even know the reason india fell in hockey ? It’s because of the abrupt change in surfaces from grass to auto turf in 1974 and there were no Astro turfs in India to practice on. Recently orissa has sponsored the Indian hockey team and made a lot of Astro turf pitches to support indias rise in hockey. Regarding your other childish remark for blaming love of cricket, let me remind you that India has only become good in cricket recently. Before the 2000s, india was not good in cricket either - we were still bad in other sports. In order to be successful, other sports have to emulate cricket and we also have to stop being racist against ourselves to belittle the sport we re good in. India is also very good in chess.
If you consider the main sports of gulf countries and it's football. Similar cricket in India . Both sports are like the Roman Colosseum fights , where masses just need to cheer up eating popcorn 🍿. The only difference here is that gladiators make more revenue directly and collaborative income than a few countries put together 🎉. Individual sports are sidelined earlier and now also. Yes , None of the schools promote sports. Basic social etiquette are not taught . Well it's my take... Not that I dislike both games.... Our school education needs to be reviewed and revised... Grandparents riding with grandchildren are crossing red signals, teachers reaching school are crossing through no entry ⛔. Parents disembark children at no stop point. God Save our young India.
We would rather stay in denial than try and accept our flaws and rectify them. Because in a country interested with the hours and not the outcome, we would rather work or pretend to work for 70 hours a week than focus on good quality and quantity of output. We would rather flaunt a degree and have no empirical knowledge. We would rather look stylish than be healthy. We would rather find a backdoor than gain an ethical entry.
American sports gets a major share of competition that are based mostly in their country. Out of 48 ,28 gold medals are earned in water sports like swimming, diving and water polo alone which is more popular in US. It's like having 10 extra events in javelin throw, hockey or kabaddi . It's all built to cater the ego of these big countries and bronze earned by Indians shines brighter than gold.
If RSS and sanghparivar are to be right about their varnashrama and caste system then the kshatriyas of India would have brought minimum 100 golds to india !!!
As much as I agree with you, I do not agree with your comparison of India's Hockey achievements with Michael Phelps, Hockey is one sport that every Indian has to be proud of, 8 golds is the highest among any other country, next best is Germany at 4 gold medals. I'm not sure what point you were trying to make there.
Thank you for that counterview Yes, sports like swimming have multiple categories that help contestants win a number of medals. Hockey does not offer that scope. But in hockey, too, we have slipped.
Boasting and inflating small achievements are the only means to keep morale up or else depression follows with a loss of any remaining spirit to push on. India has little choice to do so and so, brags big over little and one feels very sorry for this to see happen. Indians have a lot of talents and are as equally intelligent as any other. However, with the wrong priorities, the wrong governance, the wrong leadership, and the wrong social and political matrix, no matter the size of the population nor the wealth of its natural resources can produce any greatness to any country and make it a nation.

I would like to make a few quick points. 1. Calling it a 'disgrace' is quite disrespectful to other countries and shows a lack of sporting spirit. Instead of appreciating others for doing well, it's like we are saying they only won it because we didn't do well. We are not entitled to medals just because we have a larger population. 2. Only a handful of countries win more than 10 medals. It doesn't mean it's a disgrace for remaining 100+ countries. 3. With the amount of politics, lack of infrastructure and scouting our athletes have gone through, we should really appreciate them. 4. The reason for our lack of success in Olympics is not our success in sports like cricket and chess. That's a really weird line of reasoning that emerges where people prefer blaming the 1-2 sports where we are good for the sports we are not good. 5. India is slowly making progress in sports in a lot of events. India is covering bases in a lot of different sports and progress is visible. For example, India is able to finish ahead of power houses like Iran, New Zealand and Kenya in the Commonwealth Games. It is because India is good in a wider range of sports, and because there are many sports in these events which are not in the Olympics. However, the reason they are more successful in the Olympics is because they have a higher degree of mastery over the sports that they are good in. Performance in Olympics doesn’t happen in vacuum. Success has to first come in a lot of other Tournaments first. India has shown improvement in the last few years in. We should support our athletes in all these events and watch them regularly. Asian Games Commonwealth Games World university Games Paralympics (India finished in top 25 last time) Deaflympics (India came 9th last time) Special Olympics (India finished in top 5 the last time and 3rd before that) Youth Olympics World championships in Archery and Wrestling and Shooting India won the last World Youth Archery Championship. India is also doing well in the ongoing U17 World Wrestling Championship. We need to spread awareness about these events. It will inspire more people to get into these sports. India is definitely showing improvement in a lot of these other events, which will eventually translate to Olympic success later on. We need to understand the success in the Olympics has to be preceeded in success in these events first and we must support them at these events and also spread awareness about these events. I am quite proud of India's performances in the last few Paralympics, Deaflympics, Special Olympics and world championships of various sports (archery, chess, wrestling, shooting). I am also quite proud of Neeraj Chopra and Sumit Antil's achievements in javelin, It's only a matter of time till we become a power house in a lot of these sports that we are able to perform in a Commonwealth or Asian Level, at the Olympic level. I am excited about the upcoming Paralympics. We should spread more awareness about it.
@@joe-metricview6035 You're welcome. By the way, India won 4 gold medals today in U17 World Wrestling Championship Why don't you make a video about that too to spread awareness ? There is a problem where fans also only watch Olympics every 4 years and nothing in between. If we follow it regularly, we will realise that India is growing well and progressing steadily. It will also spread more awareness of sports and bring more people into the game. Right now, the level of discourse is very low in the comments. Most people only watch Olympics every 4 years and have very little sporting attitude. Most of them I see only say the following - 1. We are bad at sports because we are good in cricket. (Instead of being happy about being good in one sport). 2. We are bad because our athletes are getting too much payment and sponsorships - Totally ridiculous considering how little India spends on sports. 3. We are even behind other countries with population comparable to our cities. This shows very little sporting spirit and respect for opponents. It doesn't matter what the population is. Ultimately, game is played between two people or two teams. All billion people are not playing on one side. What everyone needs to understand is the money the athletes are getting are very much necessary. It is not easy to even qualify into the Olympics - Just imagine getting into the top 20 of whichever profession you are in. India is good in cricket, not because the international cricketers make money. India is good in cricket because people know that even Ranji level cricketers will make a good living. That's what enables a lot of people to give their lives to the game. We need to make the same support system in all our sports if we have to reach heights. Just sitting in arm chairs and calling it a disgrace won't help anyone.
Indian politicians always dream big but unable to achieve. Modi wants to make India a superpower by 2047, it’s really a laughing stock. Did Modi who run the largest democracy in the world manage to alleviate millions of Indians out of poverty? I predict in next 30 years, India will still be an impoverished country and will find it difficult to achieve developed status least to be a superpower. Cut down on defence budget and help the ordinary Indians who are struggling to make ends meet. Resolve your huge internal domestic problems first - rampant corruption, racial religious violent, primitive caste system, infrastructure deficiency, income disparity, abject poverty, etc.
Sports has no place or merit in current education system, why will kids take part in sports when even a single digit mark is awarded to the deserving kids.
To all the geniuses who think the reason India is not winning any medals is because we pay 'too much' to our athletes even though they do not win gold, Archana Kamath has retired from table tennis for academics today. We already have a very limited pool of players in table tennis and it's not even feasible career for the top 2 or 3 Indian table tennis players. To become a champion in a sport, you need a large pool of competitive players which can only happen if they play the game full time from a young age. The reason India is good in cricket is not because the top players make a lot of money. It's because even a Ranji cricketer can make good money. We need to bring the same financial security in every game. Do you know why Korea is so good in archery ? They have around 2000 archers sponsored by Hyundai ? Do we have any sport where 2000 people can afford to do it full time ? Next time you are upset india does not win a gold medal, don’t be angry at the athlete who got bronze or didn’t reach the podium. Be angry that our talent pool is so limited that we couldn’t produce better players because it just isn’t financially feasible. The solution to get better is to make it feasible and attractive for more people and reuse people who played as coaches for the next generation.

It wouldn’t be right to say the Olympic events are 4 yearly disgrace for India. Population is not a criteria for excellence in sports; you may check with some other populous nations also. In our country sports administration is largely dominated by non-technical persons who have no knowledge or very little knowledge about sports. The infrastructure on which excellence in sports depends is largely non-existent in our country. Merely spending lakhs or crores of rupees on specific sportspersons will not yield desired result, proper planning is necessary. Just think the period prior to 2008 when we used to return from Olympics with just one medal around the neck. Since 2008 our performance has certainly improved, now we are getting 6-7 medals. Hockey, which once became a dying sport in India, has now been revived with India getting back-to- back medals. This Olympics we failed to convert 4th place finish to bronze medals in as many as 6 events when our players choked when they were on verge of winning. Most unfortunate is the disqualification of Vinesh Phogat due to technical reason at the crucial moment when she was assured of silver medal at least. Counting all these we could have got 13 medals. Players tried their best; I think it is the best ever performance by India in the Olympics. They will definitely do better in the next Olympics with new events like cricket to be included.
One more thing you have not mentioned. Women participation. In Paris, 50% participation is by women. When as a country we troll women athletes and drive away the 50% chance of competing itself, how can you perform better than other countries.
The more notable fact is that the country which strolls casually to the top of the rankings every edition - the US - and has been doing so repeatedly ever since one can remember, does not have a sports ministry, does not have government-funded sports programs and runs no government propaganda for sports, which is part of the civic culture in that place where mixing sports and politics is taboo. Compare that to India. The kind of hot air being blown around Ms. Phogat is the direct opposite of this. In many ways, the US’s performance at the Olympics represents the height of individual excellence. The training is mostly funded by corporations and wealthy individuals in their own capacity. In India, uproar follows a decision by the Ambanis to provide some funding for sports. There is one organization in India where physical training is part of the regimen, and that is the RSS. Very popular I suppose!😂 I think the problem is that, in general, Indians don’t have a clue. And like many commenters here, they find the blanket of resignation and self-loathing warm and comfortable. “At least, it can’t get much worse!”
I don't care about bronze or silver. fed up with indian olympians getting these bronze and silver. When my tax money is used to train these olympians, i need them to win gold medals. And india should at least be in top 20 in Olympic medal table.
Have to disagree with you on the Phogat matter. She was under the weight threshold in every bout up to the finals. So she earned every win up to a minimum silver medal. And she fought 3 bouts the previous day. Like a dry sponge that sucks water, her body had to take in water and food and that went straight to her muscles causing her weight to go over the limit by 100 grams, about the weight of one banana. So stop the platitudes and talk about what needs to be done. Billions are being spent on the country’s singular obsession, cricket. New stadiums are being announced in every nook and corner of the country - what is the need for a stadium in Varanasi? Or the new cricket academy that will have over 100 pitches? And cricket earns its revenues from the same public who criticise the country for its one trick pony, or sport. Next, pollution is at dangerous levels in most cities and towns making it impossible for anyone to exercise outside. Schools in the US have swimming pools, running tracks, stadiums for sports, tennis courts, etc. I am aware of all this being totally absent when I was growing up in India. The Indian government is more interested in building temples, nothing else.
Just want to correct you that BCCI is not funded by the government. It’s the only sporting board in India that is independent of government grants. All initiatives like building stadiums and so on are made by bcci. So it’s not like money is being taken away from other sports and put into cricket. In order to become Great in sports, every sport has to become what cricket is. Simply hating the only success model we have won’t work. You complain about no infrastructure for sports but are also upset that cricket infrastructure is being made everywhere. It’s a contradiction. BCCI has even opened up NCA to athletes of other sports this year.
We do not hv the facilities in any cities for Olympic sports Cricket 🏏 is the only sport all know It requires another 50 years to reach where China is today We r behind Pakistan also

Yes, we need to get a sense of fair play and abiding by rules ingrained in us

The disparity in rewards for Indian athletes and cricketers is staggering. While cricketers like Rishab Pant, who received top-notch care and support after an accident, and the winning World Cup cricket team, which received a whopping Rs 5 crore each, are handsomely rewarded, our Olympic athletes have never seen more than Rs 25 lakhs, highlighting the vast gap in recognition and support. This contrast underscores the need for a more equitable distribution of resources and incentives to encourage and nurture talent across all sports, not just cricket.
Important point. But the market will always reward higher the sport that gives them better returns

May those days of rejuvenation arrive fast
India will never perform better unless we get rid of love for cricket. To us any cricket action is a world record. Thank God sporting nations do not play cricket or else we will be the last team in cricket too like hockey now.
Quite possible
Nonsense thought

Valid point. Events like swimming and gymnastics sees a single athlete winning multiple versions of the same sport

Thank you for that counterview
Yes, sports like swimming have multiple categories that help contestants win a number of medals.

Physical fitness generally below par, poor sports culture -- Agree
Sorry, India. Please ask Modi, he is very popular.
Asian Games
Commonwealth Games
World university Games
Paralympics (India finished in top 25 last time)
Deaflympics (India came 9th last time)
Special Olympics (India finished in top 5 the last time and 3rd before that)
Youth Olympics
World championships in Archery and Wrestling and Shooting
India won the last World Youth Archery Championship.
I am also quite proud of Neeraj Chopra and Sumit Antil's achievements in javelin,
It's only a matter of time till we become a power house in a lot of these sports that we are able to perform in a Commonwealth or Asian Level, at the Olympic level.
I am excited about the upcoming Paralympics. We should spread more awareness about it.
Thank you for such a detailed feedback
@@joe-metricview6035 You're welcome. By the way, India won 4 gold medals today in U17 World Wrestling Championship Why don't you make a video about that too to spread awareness ?
There is a problem where fans also only watch Olympics every 4 years and nothing in between. If we follow it regularly, we will realise that India is growing well and progressing steadily. It will also spread more awareness of sports and bring more people into the game.
Right now, the level of discourse is very low in the comments. Most people only watch Olympics every 4 years and have very little sporting attitude. Most of them I see only say the following -
Yes, a lot of work to do at home

Agree we missed a few medals by thin margins. By our standards this Olympics we have a good medal collection

One more thing you have not mentioned. Women participation. In Paris, 50% participation is by women. When as a country we troll women athletes and drive away the 50% chance of competing itself, how can you perform better than other countries.
Thank you for flagging this
The more notable fact is that the country which strolls casually to the top of the rankings every edition - the US - and has been doing so repeatedly ever since one can remember, does not have a sports ministry, does not have government-funded sports programs and runs no government propaganda for sports, which is part of the civic culture in that place where mixing sports and politics is taboo.
Very popular I suppose!😂
I think the problem is that, in general, Indians don’t have a clue. And like many commenters here, they find the blanket of resignation and self-loathing warm and comfortable. “At least, it can’t get much worse!”
Really interesting points
Thank you for commenting
I don't care about bronze or silver. fed up with indian olympians getting these bronze and silver. When my tax money is used to train these olympians, i need them to win gold medals. And india should at least be in top 20 in Olympic medal table.
That's a reasonable ask -- to be at least in the top 20
The amount india is spending on scouting and training in sports is smaller than many other smaller countries.
Shame..to be an Indian 😢😢
Given our resources we should easily be able to put the ignominy behind
Did you do anything to make India proud before feeling shame ?
India should invest in sanitation, flush toliets, reducing poverty and hunger. The olympics is meaningless entertainment.
If we do all that, it will reflect on our podium finishes, too
Have to disagree with you on the Phogat matter.
Thank you for commenting
Just want to correct you that BCCI is not funded by the government. It’s the only sporting board in India that is independent of government grants. All initiatives like building stadiums and so on are made by bcci. So it’s not like money is being taken away from other sports and put into cricket.
In order to become Great in sports, every sport has to become what cricket is. Simply hating the only success model we have won’t work. You complain about no infrastructure for sports but are also upset that cricket infrastructure is being made everywhere. It’s a contradiction.
