I'm not sure that video game popularity slumped so much as consoles slumped. The Commadore 64 and ZX Spectrum were not consoles per se but rivalled consoles.
Born 81 and in terms of both gaming and the internet what astonishing things I’ve witnessed AND YES I had mega drive sonic on repeat 😂 PS totally get the guy with the waistcoat and glasses 😂😂
Good job on this video! Very informative. Not many people know (especially in Asia and Europe) that Apple also tried once to jump on game console bandwagon with the Apple Pippin, and failed quite miserably. Sega has been pushed out of the hardware console market, and is now just a 3rd-party games developer, merely a shadow of its former glory. Nintendo, realizing it can no longer compete in the home console segment with Sony and Microsoft, made a smart move to the handheld console space. Atari, one of the original (console game industry) giants, was completely wiped out of existence.
Anyone else remember pong and river raid ( I literally played day and night with friends). I feel sorry for the people that will never experience playing these games for the first time. It was like being in heaven. Some of the other modern games after snes era that changed gaming were FF7( arguably the game that brought rpgs to the west), Super Mario 64 (I was awestruck at the 3d quality), Golden Eye (remeber shooting in the toilets lol) , Gran Turismo, Metal Gear Solid ( probably one of the best games ever made) , Tekken 3 (Heihachi and co were awesome and the fighting in 3d was out of this world), Resident evil 1 (scary and otherworldly), GTA 3 (seeing sandbox type gaming on the PS2 was out of this world experience. I could name more.
I have an idea for nintendo: the nintendo ultimate. It can play all of the past cartridges it has multiple cartridge slots for multiple console games. And it fan be portable or a home console. And it can play dvd and blueray.

Being to control the movement of something on your home tv was an incredible experience in the 70s and early 80s. What I dislike is this idea that after Atari there were no gaming till Nintendo saved everyone. Young gamers simply went from console to home computers where there were even more games with improved graphics and the excuse that we needed a computer for home work...this phrase is used by young PC gamers even today. The Fifth generation was like 2nd generation where there was a flush of different game sessions
My 1st game system was the Atari 2600. I was born in 1987. As a child the Atari 2600 was the game system that my mother owned. So I played the Atari 2600 everyday. At my grandma's house, there was a original Nes, however it wasn't my system. I only played Nes when I visited my grandparents. Now I went from The Atari 2600 straight to The SNES Christmas of 1992.
Did anyone actually realize the "crash" was happening back then? As a kid, I had no idea. We were all playing those Atari games through the early 80's up until the C64 and Nintendo became popular. There was no "down time" where everyone had given up on video games... This video game crash is something I'd never heard of until recently.
I noticed because I was making my own money and buying my own games and right at the time of the crash the games were drastically reduced I price in bargain bins for as low as 2 bucks
@Mad Planet How is it underpowered? It can run very demanding games such as Doom and Wolfenstein with decent graphics and framerates. Its portable: honestly what do you expect out of it?
The NES was not Nintendo's first video game console. Lol why is that guy at like 3:10 saying it like Nintendo decided in the 80s to get into gaming all of a sudden?? They had a system prior in the 70s that sold really well (though only released in japan)
gen 2 here, 50yrs old...My favorite christmas was 1978, I was 8 at this point and I did not see it coming. My mom handed me this box and as I ripped it open it was the ATARI 2600 (with the free Combat game), I was in heaven. I knew the graphics were wack, the Donkey Kong sucked, the Pacman's graphic were AWFUL, The closest game true to the Arcades standards was SPACE INVADERS...but you didn't care I HAD AN ATARI 2600!!! My favorite game was PITFALL, every Christmas after that I just wanted Atari Cartridges. as time went on new consoles like COLECOVISION and the NES came out with arcade level graphics, but by the time I hit 12yrs old my mom moved in with her boyfriend and left me with my grandmother...she never brought me another Christmas gift again during my childhood. I didn't get another gaming console until I paid for it myself, I got the SUPER NES when I was 22yrs old in the Army. By the time I turned 28, I have owned nothing but Play stations.
You know that I got a ps1 for 5 dollars at a bike swap meet and the same swap meet I found a ps2, when I asked how much it was he said 30 so I bought it. When I tried it it did not turn on, and I got scammed of 30 dollars. Sad day
The 360 didn't have any of those things until later on except achievements. Not to mention Microsoft stole hardware from Sony and even then they still could not beat them
Yeah the Kinect was after the Wii came out. Idk why they were talking about all of those things like that before they were put out. It kinda had the vibe the people who made the video are shilling for Microsoft.
Why does every single video about gaming get SOMETHING wrong.... KOTOR came out when I was in high school, I graduated 04, therefore it did NOT come out in 2005 (which was the same year the Xbox 360 came out, ridiculous)!
I agree PS2 the best by far also intresting fact in ps3 or two you can play online withoput subscription on xbox you could of not. By the way still never buy subscription Playstation Fan
PC is timeless. Consoles are not that. Remember the Atari 2600? Gone. Sega Dreamcast? Original Xbox? PlayStation 1? Typically consoles are defined by their generation and the lifespan is all but temporary. Especially when more competitors enter the market, like The Mad Box, for instance, which will no doubt be DOA. PlayStation 2 basically killed of the Dreamcast, as an example. Or was it 1? I digress. However, I prefer the PC because I can just upgrade it and keep playing and enjoying the games I have. I do have a PS4, and it has great games but that is the only console I am interested in.
MrSmilesCam oh, I was kidding. But anyways thanks for the info 😊 I also prefer to play on the computer as I can aim better in shooters with story or rpg shooters like mass effect, fallout 4. I do not play online shooters
Olivia Moore You’re welcome. I prefer the PC as well, only PS4 for what little exclusive games they have to offer other than multi-platform games. Otherwise I have no reason to own a PS4, and even then I’m having a hard time justifying keeping it around! 😂
Sega Master System once again just shat on. Too bad that the United States bias still rules like if we don't know it...its NOT kool. Sega won Genesis kicked ass right? Yeah of course they did
This is such an under-appreciated history video. So glad I found it!
6:23 Oh my god that is the best commercial for anything I've ever seen! Hahaha!
I definitely think the quality of your videos warrant a much larger viewer-base.
we are so close to the 9th gen, honestly cant wait
9th Gen gang
Now we’re in a new generation again, Ps5, Xbox Series X, And Nintendo Switch
@Aidan McFarlane How isnt Nintendo trying. I would say there trying the most.
Actually nintendo switch still count as the 8th gen. Their 9th gen is nintendo switch pro.
the 5th generation is my favorite, it was so amazing transitioning from 16 bit to 3D polygons
5th was the worst tbh, only had one console worth playing
Wonderful video. Truly thank you so much
Words can't describe this 10:11

I had a friend who thought beta was the bomb during the vhs beta max wars. He liked Sega too.

Mr. SEA I feel ya but at the same time this is the history of gaming consoles not the history of gaming.
I spot KH at 9:47 and Tidus at 12:24 🤗 Like come on one should be BOUND to come across square enix in a video of gaming history :p

Ps5 following in the footsteps of the wii, can’t buy them off shelf anywhere!!!!!
With all the shipping issues, I haven't even tried to get the new consoles. Just going to wait until mid-step console comes out.
Remember when you’d wish the game play would resemble the interludes 😂😂😂😂NOW it does !!!!!

I knew it would be awesome when I saw pong and Golden eye in the starting bit.
The algorithm really hates this video. The only reason I can get back to it is because I wrote out a link in a google doc.
Is anyone else questioning why the picture for the Apple Pippin is actually a 3DO? 7:55 to look for yourself
Looks like a third gen CDI
My first console was the gameqube and i still have it
6:54 Paul Rudd lol
You know that I got a ps1 for 5 dollars at a bike swap meet and the same swap meet I found a ps2, when I asked how much it was he said 30 so I bought it. When I tried it it did not turn on, and I got scammed of 30 dollars. Sad day
F
Project Scarlet
you just downloaded from times channel and infrged it
I was a Sega guy until the Dreamcast died. Since then it’s been both Xbox and Sony. No point in having to decide, I just buy what I want.
17:44
23:17 "There's no limit"... and yet there's STILL no 9th generation. ^^;
Nes original still takes the number 1 spot for me and it’s not about sales
My first console is a Microsoft Xbox 360
The 360 didn't have any of those things until later on except achievements. Not to mention Microsoft stole hardware from Sony and even then they still could not beat them
Yeah the Kinect was after the Wii came out. Idk why they were talking about all of those things like that before they were put out. It kinda had the vibe the people who made the video are shilling for Microsoft.
My favorite video game console is Classic Nintendo, Atari, Super Nintendo, Xbox, and PS4
13:18 lol
So switch is the 9th
I've got my eyes on Apple and Google (Android). They're currently just mobile gaming but hey, you never know. Competition is healthy.
My first console was the Wii and my next will be the NES
Wow! I wanna PlayStation 3!
lol the OUYA wass on the list with the xbox one and ps4
"Go back to using their computers to play games"
What a clueless line
What's the future? The Metaverse.
Then we have the 9th gen of consoles lol. Nintendo Switch, Xbox One Series X,S , PS5
Mine was Nintendo 64.
Neo geo??
Xbox exclusives?
I dont know if video games were made for kid anymore...-_-
Oh i mean kids

stop lying saying the worst system ever at 20:38 thats not true because Xbox One Is the best console system ever.
R.I.P pc 😢
not even close pc is the ultimate gaming machine
Love playing Command & Conquer in pc
But but but what about the pc master race? 😜

MrSmilesCam I got a ps4 too. I used it before I got my new pc to be able to play fallout 4
This is hilarious because we know in the future the Wii U wins
The world's best console is
pc
Every game I own on console is full of glitches on pc when I watch pc gamers play it. Glitches that I never encounter on console. PC gaming sucks
PC can't play Splatoon
Goldeneye isn't that good, come on, guys. A FPS with a controller, I don't get it. It's always been ridiculous, it will always be.
Sega Master System once again just shat on. Too bad that the United States bias still rules like if we don't know it...its NOT kool. Sega won Genesis kicked ass right? Yeah of course they did
Btw im from the states that's why im a Sega fan boy! Nintendont
sega are sucks at marketing
