Brown Parents Don't Believe in Therapy
Вставка
- Опубліковано 28 вер 2024
- It's so weird that my Indian parents don't believe in therapy, even though they're the reason I go! Jokes aside, I grew up in a culture that didn't really talk about mental health and I'm trying to change that and address the stigma. Did you experience something similar in another culture? Let's talk about it and make sure we're all mentally healthy during this difficult time. Love you, Lilly x

So true. Growing up my parents would be like feelings, you can’t have those just do as we tell you and you will be happy and that was end of that talk.
True and that is exactly the reason why we have difficulties expressing our feelings and thoughts which makes people depressed or they miss opportunities to have great relationships with others.
I love it when people jokingly say, "You need therapy!"
And I'm like - dude - you have no idea.
Hello
"Why you have issues? You a magazine?" 😂😂😂

For me I am lucky because my mother is a therapist so she gets it but I understand that other people might have trouble telling their parents about that stuff. Because I look down on you and I think that’s what most people think when they wanna tell their parents that they want to go to therapy or that they’re having trouble they’re worried that their parents will say that they’re being overdramatic

Parents: you did what?
I know! I didn't say "you are are a horrible parent!!" Geez!
Im Russian and oh boy does this hit all the points.
True:)
I mean I think the title could be “parents don’t believe in therapy” I’m not brown and my family don’t believe in therapy even though it could rly help me. No hate tho, she rly did say some important things that everyone could relate to. Xxxxx
I was kinda hoping for a solution but now I'm still here, even more desperate because I feel like everyone thinks therapy is only for really crazy people and that I am a bad human because I need therapy
Hannah Murdoch most Caucasian believe in therapy assuming you are one .Most parents of colour do not believe in therapy.
I have quite a few acquaintances and some friends who are white and think therapy is hogwash too. She probably says a lot of things about brown people that are actually universal
Fair. It could. An appreciation for therapy usually only arises in otherwise privileged families. When you don't have socio-structural constraints on your well-being, when the world is supposed to work for you, and you're still unhappy or feel like a misfit. That's why therapy is popular with white people, but white people of affluence. I'm sure there are caucasians who live in less affluent communities and have deep disdain for therapy and are equally invested in the What Will People Think-aboutery.
She can only talk about what she knows though just like mainstream media doesn’t address minorities realities because they don’t know for the most part
The "What will people think?" trope is so true as a person raised by immigrant parents.
I am born and brought up in India and my parents literally tell me this "what will people think " every single day.. and now I think the same way everytime I do something 😁
And also when I told my mom I might have some issues and want to go see a doctor she said just wake up early and everything will be fine.
i feel you girl, i have also felt insure about things which i did not ever really noticed before they told me, it was a hard time growing up like that, and i am born brown, but my north Indian parents are obsessed with white skin, my little sis is fair, and all my life people have been criticizing me that i do not take care of myself properly that is why i have brown skin....and they think drinking coffee is the reason behind it i
