We tried a first start after ten years the other night and it turned over fine but it would not catch. I'll go through your TDC video and this one and see if I can get the motor started. Thanks!!

    AHA! AHA!! Thank you. I have a crank, no spark for my 1973 airhead mototcycle and you've enlightened me - it's probably my condenser. Also, my points gap was a little tighter than spec which would have help the spark jump the points rather than sending the electrical charge to my plugs.
    Even if this isn't my problem, I understand it now thanks to you. Thanks!

    Nice simplified explanation. When I was a kid working in a gas station we would find amusement in charging up condensers and leaving them for a co worker to pick up. When we heard a scream we knew our mission had been accomplished. It was lots of fun until I accidentally nailed myself one day!

    Awesome video! Thanks for posting. I'm working on my Ford Flathead - changing points, condenser, coil. The engine is on a test stand. My issue is that it fires momentarily - then I crank it with no results. Fuel is fine, it's electrical. I'm working on it tonight. I'll post an up-date when I get it running.

    This video just helped me get my 56 Ford 272 back going, I knew I had everything wired right and good parts still no power to points, turns out all you had to say was the connection between the outside and inside of distributor power wire couldn’t touch the housing !!!! Sure enough it was grounding out inside the distributor because the insulator was old and almost all gone ! Great video you said something that I haven’t heard on other points style ignition videos , good job and thank you very much !!

    You saved me from tearing my hair out. 36 Desoto has been sitting in garage for 40 years. Everything looked great but no spark. It failed the first test. Points were closed but no continuity from ground to 6 volt wire from coil to distributor. A couple of strokes between points with emery cloth and Voila, spark! I had a feeling your site was going to work since my wife’s first name is Keeth.

    Thanks for the explanation of things. It was very helpful showing the distributor and points function. 2600RPM is 1300 fires of each spark plus because the distributor turns at half the speed of the crankshaft on a four stroke engine. That times the number of cylinders is the number of times the points open and close. Not sure if you describe dwell in degrees of rotation.

    Maybe I missed something but even the old flatties are 4 stroke so you're only sparking every other rotation. So 2500 rpm \2 * 6 cylinders = 7500 sparks\min. The distributor is driven off the camshaft on most engines (not actually sure about that on the old flatties) and the camshaft is gear reduced and spinning slower than the engine

    Don't forget on the old cars to check the body ground straps. Usually from firewall to heads or starter to firewall. Loosen and retighten or clean. Do same on the power wires on the coil and distributor. If working on chrysler dual point distributor. You must set each side by advancing lobe on each side to set. It will appear you can set both points at same time without advancing the lobes. It will not start that way.

    Excellent. So clear and well produced. One query. Why does the distributor vacuum rotate the breaker plate? Or why does the breaker plate rotate?

    • @keithsgarage5831
      @keithsgarage5831  Рік тому +1

      The breaker plate rotates both directions to automatically adjust spark timing based on engine load and speed. Spark timing is adjusted by 2 different ways. One by inertia weights and springs that expand and advance the timing at higher engine RPM. Two by engine vacuum that is hooked up to the distributor vacuum pot. The vacuum pot has a spring inside it as well that hold the breaker plate in place .As vacuum is increased it overcomes the spring and rotates the breaker plate.

    The reason for the metal jacket from the ignition switch to the coil is to shield the wier from the radio. With out the ignition wire would cause EMF interference with the radio all you would hear is pops and cracking from the radio. Tube radios are sensitive to emf interference. Ta da

    • @keithsgarage5831
      @keithsgarage5831  3 роки тому

      My AM radio still works fine without it. The shield has been removed. The 6V signal from the ignition switch to the coil transfers the same 6V (low volt low amps) found the rest of the non-shielded wires up behind the dash. The shield was there for anti-theft is my understanding. The voltage wire from the coil to the distributor cap is heavily shielded. It is in the engine compartment. It potentially could potentially cause radio interference. However does not either. My AM tube radio works just fine.

    • @andysautounion1
      @andysautounion1 3 роки тому

      @@keithsgarage5831 it's do to the wire is attached to the coil witch creates a high tension radio signal. Same as the early Corvettes had a shield around the distributor for that issue. Old point systems can effect people with pacemakers for the same reason.
