Procedente de mi selecta bodega, os traigo hoy un material de primera ripeado de VHS con excelente calidad de audio y video, que seguro no va a dejar indiferente a ningún aficionado a la buena música…
Leyendas del Blues de la talla de Eric Clapton, B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Robert Cray y muchos más se dieron cita el 11 de mayo de 1995 en Austin (Texas) para rendir cumplido homenaje al genial y tristemente desaparecido Stevie Ray Vaughan.
Con la mano conductora de su hermano mayor Jimmie, y con el apoyo de su banda, Double Trouble, los grandes gurús de la guitarra dieron un buen repaso a los temas del mítico guitarrista tejano, aportando además sus impresiones sobre el gran Stevie Ray en forma de cortas entrevistas, que dejan bien a la claras lo que ellos, y todos opinamos sobre el Rayo Tejano, que además de desarrollar una fulgurante carrera como solista, fue también reclamado por grandes estrellas de la música como Stevie Wonder, Jeff Beck, Joe Cocker o David Bowie para prestar sus servicios en sus discos.

People, you have not lived until you have heard Buddy Guy play that one sustain that speaks to the cosmos...
I saw SRV in Wellington NZ 1986. I was right in front of him, i yelled at him "Play some Hendrix", He looked at me and into the mic said "you wanna hear some Hendrix?" 2000 people yelled yeah!!, he then slayed Voodoo Chile for 20 minutes.
Then i gave Tommy Shannon a joint which he smoked while playing.
That wasn't a dream, but i was in heaven.

Wow my dad had a VHS of this back in the 90s. I remember sitting there with my first act acoustic at 6 years old being blown away by every one of these people and in that moment, my real love for the blues was born. There isn’t a genre like it and there will never be another like SRV. Hearing BB King sing such high praises always stuck with me, Bonnie’s rendition “he’s my pride and joy” - little things like that have stayed with me and it’s great to be brought back. Thank you for sharing!
Saw this PBS special back in the 90s (along with the Santana Sacred Fire in Mexico), introduced me to Blues and forever altered my taste in music! What an amazing guitarist SRV was and this was such a beautiful tribute! That Tiktok song toward the end is what the world needs these days!!

Darn BB Delivered again. Just before BB Died they flew my buddy up from St Petersburg to open up for BB in Arkansas. Lee Pons New Orleans boggie . Dr Johns friend. I'm 61 from Tampa. Guitar player. Music in the 80's was local and national. From Seven Mary three to Death Metal in Tampa. We all wanted to be King of the Mountain. It was a fun time. When you're pot dealer was your friend and bassist. 80's were nuts. When SVR hit the circuit even the shredders were impressed. Cause he had Soul not flat scales.

I feel quite the opposite in terms of his playing and his vocal interpretation. I've always admired Jimmy's carriage in this specific performance. He's not a technical player at all, nor does he pass himself off as one. I find the economy in his playing deeply bluesy and cool.

Tenian tanto Stevie como Jimi gran querencia por la improvisación, y la adoración que Stevie Ray tenía por Hendrix era tal que tenía asimilada su técnica hasta el más mínimo detalle, por lo que no es extraño que si compararas una versión de Hendrix en un "mal día" con una de Stevie en uno bueno, fácilmente te puedas quedar con la de Stevie....que además también solía hacer en directo otros temas del mago Hendrix como "Third Stone From The Sun" o "Little Wing". Sobre esta última, publicada en su álbum postumo "The Sky is Crying" de 1991 (que por cierto, me lo regalaron los de la cuadrilla el día que cumplí los 16 añitosquienlospillara) decía Jimmie Vaughan, hermano de Stevie, que estuvo muchos años sin poder escucharla porque sentía el espíritu de su hermano en la habitación y le daba miedo.....y doy fe de que acojona, pero por el sonidazo y por lo magistral....Que Dios los tenga en su gloria a los dos.....
Me pones la versión de Austin City Limits del 89...a ver que te parece la de El Mocambo del 91...en este directo también interpreta "Third Stone From The Sun" y le da unas buenas hostias a la Number One, su principal strato, de 1959.....si le cojo, me quito la zapatilla y le pongo el culo como un tomate.....

Honestly feel kinda bad for Jimmie. He wasn't anywhere close, not in the ballpark, not even in the same planet as his brother. Stevie wad light years beyond him in talent and power. I couldn't even listen to texas flood, like man...embarrassing

It may not have the soul of Texas Flood, but it has the soul of Jimmie Vaughan and he expressed his UNIQUE love for his brother through that rendition of that song. I wish I could play with as much heart as Jimmie does in this tribute. Don't forget Jimmie was famous and skilled WAY before stevie was even out of 10th grade.
Well... Jimmie's style is not Stevie's style--why should it be? "Texas Flood" was written by Larry Davis and famously played by Fenton Robinson in a completely different--and "clean"--way. To each his own. As for Jimmie as a player, he was pretty impressive on the first two Fabulous Thunderbirds albums, which I listened to before I even heard of Stevie. Obviously Stevie had more energy and stage presence than his brother, but IMO they are not from different planets, they're both from "Planet Texas".
