      He was such a champion of the American symphonic band, he really was brilliant at taking a musical theme and weaving all of the great tapestries of the wind band around it. An absolute genius.

      @@reevecoble1812 No, it was played on normal bassoon. I meant that the Bb was an octave higher than the one in this video, but my director wanted the note to be like how it was played in this video, so he told the bassoon section to play their lowest Bb

    3:46 the chords can be heard so clearly here I love that! In all the recordings of this song I’ve heard, I could not hear the chords so distinctly. Gorgeous

    Fun Fact: The English Horn Part at the begining is written for bass oboe(AKA Tenor Oboe) but due to its rarity its most of the time played on English Horn

      im playing this in 7th grade, and we're having trouble and the bd is like "i can remove this if you want" and everyone doesn't want that to happen because this song absolutely rips and we really wanna play it, stay determined, and don't forget to practice!

      Not that hard really, if you have bad woodwinds then I see where the problem is because of the center around bassoon, oboe, clarinet, etc. It also has important french horn too.

      Yo same! We mainly cut it since it's the end of the year and the directors wanted something we could get clean in less time. So of course, now we are playing Star Wars music :p (I play trumpet btw)

    We’re playing this as one of our pieces for our marching show and it has some of the best themes and motifs, it’s AMAZING
    It’s also really interesting for two things, it changes the feel of it throughout. From standard eighths to smooth triplets. And the themes always overlap each other and it creates a moderated chaos, beautiful

      @@stickfigureinternational8972 this isn’t professional grade… it’s an English folk song transcribed by an amazing composer, but calling it professional grade because it’s popular and well known doesn’t mean it’s that difficult. A lot of high schools will play this.

    I was just at an All Ohio high-school recital last week where this conductor was leading. He did a good job 👏 with the high-school kids!! They played this song as well!

      @@jslasher1 As a hornist, I often like to say *"German Horn"* for a few reasons. 1) to mess with people, and 2), if given enough time to explain, to call attention to the fact that *French* horns have _piston_ valves, while *German* horns have _rotary_ valves. (There are also *Vienna* horns, but that's a different discussion altogether.)

    I saw this recording during March madness 2021 while BEGGING for my 8th grade year to be done with so I could be away from that teacher I had.
    I didn't even know this was 7 minutes long until I rewatched it at home, and I was pissed that this amazing thing lost. I still love it to pieces. The theme, the upbeat nature, you just are always in a good mood while listening. This is not JUST a lame March, it is a whole SONG with a theme that so happened to be in the March madness. How could this even be? I just love it so much. I'd probably make this a theme for my story.

    This is one of my favorites. In tenth-grade I used to listen to the Loyola University of New Orleans wind ensemble CD with this on repeat as I was beginning to prepare for drum major tryouts. I'm very fond of this tune and enjoy listening to it when you all play!!!!

    I played this in high school, brings back memories. I always thought the piece ended strangely, like those last few bars sound kinda dark compared to the rest. Always wondered if there was a reason it was written that way.

      Granger was not allowed to date or marry by his mother, and this song is speculated to be about his childhood girlfriend he had to leave behind

      Childhood has some dark endings. From the mostly benign like the end of a fun day filled with play bringing an end to the joy, to the inevitable growing up and getting adult responsibilities, to maybe the death or profound impairment of a loved one, to even trauma to the kid, physical, sexual, mental.
      Childhood is wonderful, but it isn't always rosy.

    Wonderfully sympathetic performance, but I wish they would use the original orchestration for another dimension of wind color. Bass sax, sarrusophone, etc.
