I think I know my style pretty well. My biggest problem is finding the clothes I have in mind. Fitting, style, color, material -something usually isn't right.
I was all over the place until I donated about 80% of my closet and filled in some gaps in the "basics" category. Turns out, I like mixing super casual and professional elements like torn jeans and blazers.
very well thought out and expressed, thank you. I have been narrowing down to 4 capsule wardrobes, one for each of the needs that are major parts of my life: activewear, out and about, and gardening/chores, loungewear. I have been trying to minimize my closet to about 50 items. It finally fell into place for me when I "got" that I have four very different clothing needs.
Great video! V practical advice. Personally, I've found that a year of doing capsule wardrobes has been great for refining my style. What I like to wear most has become obvious and I've realised which items are not compatible with my lifestyle. (goodbye tailored blazers and party frocks that never get worn!) And thanks to UA-camrs like you, I've realised I can't justify buying fast fashion and will only buy secondhand or from ethical brands from now on. Oh - and I've become wary of those 'what every woman should have in her wardrobe' lists. Not everyone's life or style is the same.
I love using a capsule wardrobe to help me see what I actually like to wear. When you are only wearing a small number of pieces for an extended length of time, it's pretty easy to see what fits your aesthetic, lifestyle and appearance and what doesn't.
This resonated so much with me! Thank you! I've felt that I couldn't define my style and have gone through wasteful buying sprees trying to find "me" among the labels. I loved your tips will try them on my wardrobe!! ♡♡♡
Great tips!! I've sort of figured out my personal style after becoming a minimalist. I love patterned (usually black and white) dresses and pairing them with solid color skirts. My color palette is black, white, red, pink, and a touch of blue. I also realized that the only tops I do wear are the ones that don't require me to wear a bra XD. However, in the winter, I love to combine a good pair of jeans, a flannel, and a cropped or fitted top. P.S. you look so stunning *-*
Up until now my friends are always joking around how I only wear blue, green, red, and black but I now realize it's because in these colors I feel the best in. This has helped me so much!! Thank you!!
You'd be happy to know that the other day I had to buy a dress for an upcoming event and though I unfortunately had to go to a store that doesn't have ethically made items, I did employ your tips on how to get items that really bring me joy!! And I adore this dress and will get a lot of use out of it. Thank you soooo much. For some reason even though I've been working towards a semi-minimalistic lifestyle for some months now, I've never been able to master the "do I really love this item and will it be useful to me" strategy but I think I've finally internalized it. Thanks for the help.
i found that getting my seasonal colors analysed was the single most helpful thing i ever did toward defining my personal style. while i dont get hung up on rigidly sticking to those colors i found suddenly a world of colors opened to me, colors i wouldnt have gravitated to but that actually look fabulous and make me feel alive. even if you dont want to pay for an analysis, theres lots of websites with quizzes that can help you find a basic guideline to what suits. the other thing ive found that helped me to find clothes that look great on me, is to look at my skin, eyes hair and see what colors naturally occur on me. reflecting these in your capsule will help make a really interchangeable wardrobe that syncs with and enhances you, and no it doesnt have to mean wearing only black, white navy and grey (although thats fine if it suits you and you love it)
Great tips! I have been really dealing with the part about not having to wear or buy certain things. The key thing I've been thinking about are handbags. I take the bus, or ride my bike and it's much more practical to carry a backpack, or, on occasion, a cross-body bag. However, almost all style blogs, magazines, and sites say that a 29 year-old professional like me should have a classic black handbag. I had almost convinced myself to buy one before I realized that it was mostly societal pressure that was leading me to that decision. The purchase was stressing me out and didn't feel right, yet I still continued to search for "the perfect handbag." Thanks for videos like this that help us realize that what's important is what works for US.
I can't decide whether I want to be heavy metal/rocker chic type or a more girly type who wears a lot of dresses and pretty pale things. I try to combine these two as much as possible but I don't like the way they look together at least on me. So I just switch between them which I also don't like because I like consistency - I don't know if its a good word for describing it but its the only one I can think of right now. I'm sticking with the cool stuff for now because that aesthetic is stronger and I'm a university student so I don't have much time or energy to make an effort. Plus it is freaking cold here all the time.
I just discovered your channel but i have liked fashion for a long time. Since you said you wanted to know things that helped defifine a personal style i do have a few: 1: i found a foundation piece that i wear a lot (in my case a plain a-line black dress) and bought a few for different seasons such as a short sleeve, 3/4 sleeve and long sleeve option 2: choosing a color palette helped a lot, i first went for colors that compliment my skin tone (fair with yellow to neutral undertones) and found those to be reds, purples, warm greens and blues. With that i noticed that i enjoy warmer tones in summer and neutrals in winter. 3: getting a feel for the fabric. Even if you can't name a fabric at the top of your head you know what feeling you enjoy so choose fabrics that feel appealing to you
Thanks for the nice video. I've found that by delving into minimalism - or - actually purging into minimalism helped me consciously curate my closet. I realized that I was building a closet like a hobby trying come up with the 'perfect' wardrobe, but not necessarily the correct minimalist wardrobe for me. For instance, I've posted 'pins' on Pinterest of Silk Blouses and dress trousers. I have a closet full of different prints and colors. But for me and my lifestyle I would only wear those for a month or two in the fall. When it gets chilly which it is about 9 months of the year in Michigan I DON'T WEAR SILK BLOUSES - I reach for thermal long-sleeved tees under EVERYTHING from Cardigans to Blazers worn over skinnies or full skirts with tights. So rather than curating a 'perfect' wardrobe in theory. I, now, only purchase items that actually work. I am liking where this is taking me. Pinterest definitely helped me find my 'uniform' and stick with it.
That's so great you've figured out what works best for you! :) It definitely can be difficult to differentiate your 'perfect' wardrobe vs one that actually fits your lifestyle - I used to buy really formal dresses because I loved the look of them and then would never actually wear them because they made no sense for my lifestyle. :( Building a capsule wardrobe really helped me bring those things to light!
Although I have had my personal style figured out for decades, this is really a helpful reminder for me of why I don't need what I don't love in my closet, even for "coverage." Even those of us with minimal clothes and very defined needs accumulate a lot of style misses over time.
Appearance: Warm-coloured, light, soft ('sunlit autumn-spring' in lora alexander seasonal colour types), feminine, fine. I really like very rich, very warm (which don't look good on me, the 'very' part) and rich berry colors though, so I try to incorporate those in details such as shoes and other accesories. For the rest, I really pay attention to the seasonal colours. I'm already very pale with looking like a zombie tendencies and don't want to make it worse by wearing colours that don't look good on me. I also like expensive-looking shiney materials such as velvet and satin, but not too shiney. That doesn't really work for me. In terms of shape, I like interesting asymmetric elements and a variation of tight and slightly oversized things, but I want my small waist to be emphasized. Lifestyle: still going to chool, sadly. So very revealing things don't work and i save those for summer, high heels (I love, LOVE block heels! They're easy to walk on but still heels) are also slightly impractical. Aesthetic: romantic, creative, with some bold, edgy elements. I'm slightly overdressed most of the time. That kind of sums it up for me. Unfortunately there aren't many ecological and ethical brands that have this same style,a nd I haven't found a youtuber with a similar style yet either.
Love this video!! I struggle so much with personal style especially "labeling" it and feeling like I have to stay in one of those labels. I like so many different style types so I found this super helpful. Thanks
Your videos and your way of talking and explaining are so enjoyable, lovely and understandable, thank you! And although this isn't about your hair - it is amazing!
I find that one issue I have is combining the style I love with outfits that are comfortable and I feel safe in public in weirdly. Like I love the look of skirts with stockings and ankle boots but considering I take public transport to uni and often walk home when it's dark, I tend to just stick to jeans and sneakers. I could just wear that on the weekend, but even though I'm used to compliments, the second it's from a stranger I feel really uncomfortable. (I feel comfortable wearing shorts, but I find skirts and dresses too stressful, especially with sitting properly).
Thank you for this defining my personal style is something that I really struggle with, but it's something that I've really been trying to work on it lately as I've been trying to get out more and I can feel the difference in my confidence when I wear somethings compared to others. I think that one of the main difficulties for me when it comes to aesthetic verses lifestyle is that I always feel like I have to wear certain items in order to remain warm that I don't necessarily love. I did as you suggested and looked at my wardrobe and noticed that there are actually common themes, the main colours are black, white and burgundy with a hint of navy blue. So perhaps I'm not as far off as I think I am when it comes to my personal style. I also don't always pay attention to colour seasons/analysis one of my fav jumpers is that colour of pink you mentioned which isn't meant to suit me but I love it. I love pintrest but it can be a bit overwhelming sometimes but lately I've really been trying to work out what I love and it has been invaluable what I've discovered is that I like quite simple outfits which are accessorized well. I always forget to accessorize which often leaves me feeling too basic in an outfit so I've really been trying to put on a scarf or a hat recently and it's made a huge difference. On a totally different note I finally managed to make a maxi skirt, it is absolutely not perfect (I caught some fabric in one of the seams, I accidentally nicked the elastic waistband which is also maybe a tiny bit too loose for some people) but I am so proud of what I have achieved. I know this sounds stupid but if I hadn't found your channel I don't think I even would have tried so thank you.
That's so exciting you made the skirt! Little mistakes always happen - nothing to worry about :) I hope you enjoy wearing it, it's such a great feeling being able to use/wear something you made! Sounds like you're doing great figuring out your style- identifying what colours you like, outfits you feel confident in, and the fact that you like to add accessories! Thanks for always watching and commenting!
This is totally off topic but... You look stunning in this video! and your hair 😍 Anyway...having a capsule wardrobe is really helpful in this sense, because I am really learning things about my style that otherwise would be a bit more difficult for me to find out... For example, I love the way maxi skirts look, but have found out that I don't like them so much on me and therefore don't wear them so often after all in my daily life. Pants are my go-to items and I find dresses to be more appropriate for me. I especially like the final message of this video: labels are really unnecessary as long as we wear what we love with confidence and fun! Thanks for the video, have a lovely Sunday Erin!
Pinterest is so helpful when it comes to figuring out what I like. I've had one for years, and it's also helpful to do a clean out. I use to have so many girly pictures with buff fluffy skirts and really form fitting dresses until I realized that comfort is key and I'd much rather wear more relaxed things with a slight feminine touch, but also have a retro vibe lol. I've never had a ton of clothes to begin with, I've kind of always accidentally had a capsule wardrobe haha. But of course I'm guilty of buying trendy stuff that looks good on other people, that unfortunately just sits in the closet. Your videos have helped me purge a lot of that stuff or clothing swap with friends :)
Hi! Loved this video. It was super helpful and practical. I just found your channel by searching project 333 and have watched a couple of your capsule vids. I'm definitely subscribing! Your style and approach to eco friendly living is really inspiring.
This is really informative. I've definitely noticed a pattern of things I post on Pinterest concerning my personal style. it was also really cool to hear you talking about The True Cost at the start of the video. That documentary really opened my eyes to sustainable fashion, I learned a lot, and I immediately wanted to change what was in my closet.
I don't even know what is this "capsule wardrobe" thing BUT I really like your videos and your views on fashion/sustainability. I've recently made a choice to buy only cruelty free beauty and household products because I don't support animal testing. I really like the idea of minimalistic way of living/buying so I guess I will do that from now on too. I am all about "less is more" and "quality over quantity" way of thinking when it comes to food, clothes, makeup, well everything, really! =) I hate throwing food (and other things) in the trash and I do believe this world has gone a bit mad with all these different industries that don't even care about this planet (or people) they just want to sell more in order to gain more money. It's a vicious circle! I hate buying clothes just because - I buy clothes when I actually need new ones and I much rather invest in one coat (which costs about 100-200€) that will last me for ages than to buy new one every year, for example. I am not a vegan or a vegetarian though, I think I should mention this. I know I don't have all the answers but I do tend to be a more conscious consumer and I hope all people would reconsider their purchasing habits because we could all be living more responsibly. In my opinion, anyway. We don't need all that stuff in order to be happy, quite contrary! Sadly the majority of people don't realize that (I was in the same group don't that long ago but I was very depressed and anxious because of all these commercials, trends and stuff so I started to question my beliefs and habits). I am very happy with my decision now and I feel peaceful whenever I go shopping, which is new to me! (I was always nervous before) I'm in my twenties now so hopefully when I have kids of my own I will pass these beliefs on them so that they can be as responsible as me to our planet too. Minimal and cruelty free is the way to live!
Thanks so much for this video! This is definitely a topic I've been trying to figure out for a while now. I find it especially difficult to try to balance wanting to buy fewer better quality (which usually leads to more expensive) items with the fear that I haven't defined my style enough and will regret the purchase down the line. It's difficult to want to purchase pieces for the long haul while still defining my style.
Loved this thanks. I feel like I defined my style recently, but I just bought some shoes which I love but dont fit into what I thought my style was, as theyre really feminine.
Loved this video and ur sugestions! Im starting this journey of planning my capsule wardrobe and declutter, this video helped since we share the same perspective. Also loved ur shirt! tks for the video
Great video! I learned more. I always learn from your videos. And your hair looks great!!I feel good in jewel tones & prints. No plain neutrals for my tops. I like my shoes to be comfortable and unique.Going through my closet and trying everything on & really analyzing if I loved the pieces or not, really helped fine tune my style. Before, I had 3 or 4 different styles. Now I can see it all coming together. Even though, my work wardrobe is still separate from my casual wardrobe.
I look around on the sites of (sustainable) brands and save the items I really like for whatever reason on pinterest, right now that pinterest board sis still a bit small but I think that after a while I will really get a great overview of styles I like and if I want to buy something of it, I just have to click on the link pinterest goes to.
I loved this Video. I struggle so much with my style. I need at least 4 weeks to find a pair of jeans that fit me. I'm thinking a lot of an capsule waredrope and I think I will give it a try when I move, but I'm a bit afraid of it. Don't know why though.
Great tips! I would have never thought of some of your ideas.i have always struggled with how to style. I'm 35 with four little girls and I want them to view me as a confident woman so they can feel that way as they get older. Style has been a stressor for me since 5th grade. Yes that far back. Watching your videos has really inspired me to evaluate my closet and really my entire home. I have given away big bags of clothes and I still have plenty. The hardest thing for me is I fluctuate in weight so I find it hard to let go of clothing that I do not want to repurchase. Any ideas of what I should do ?
I love minimalism and simple elegant pieces with natural fabrics (silk, linen, wool) with some dresses in the summer but I’m a software dev and the uniform is T-shirt and jeans, every single day 😔
Personal style is so hard for me to pin down. My go to outfits are jeans and tee shirts, pretty much the same thing I have worn since I was five. The problem is that I currently live in Florida and I simply cannot wear jeans for more than a few months out of the year. I also recently had a baby, so I'm trying to figure out how to dress my new body, in comfortable moveable clothes that are still stylish and make me feel nice, but its so hard because I'm not comfortable in shorts. I'm not really comfortable in dresses which leaves me in a strange place of not really knowing what to wear. I know what I like and what I wear, but it was pre-Florida. The saddest day was packing away my sweaters and staring longingly at my jeans when I just wear pj's all day.
I need to know, should I wear make up cover up type on my face to cover up my pimples. They are not usually too bad and I feel okay, but most people probably look at me weird for it. I would love to know your opinion :) Your face and hair look naturally beautiful. I am not being creepy; I would just like to focus on natural beauty for myself also.
Hi, Erin! First of all, as always you look absolutely fantastic! Your beauty is just shining through! Thanks for this helpful video since it's pretty important to know how to fiind your personal style. Personally I prefer wearing clothes of simple cut but with some kind of print or interesting colour. Also I don't think it's good when something is trending and then suddenly everybody starts wearing it, I mean why should someone wear something just because somebody made it trending. It's like with a choker that almost every girl is obsessed about nowadays but it doesn't look nice on some of them. So it's important to wear only what you like and feel good in just like you said! Anyway have a nice day! :-)
i find that the pieces i dont like to wear (but own) are usually low quality (aka fabrics that make me sweat etc). i think, especially with capsule wardrobes, quality is so important.
This is a totally random question but you've mentioned your fashion school experience and I was wondering if you ever did hands on design and garment sewing (I imagine you did since you are the upcycle queen :)) and if so did you make muslins? I ask because I hate the idea of just throwing the muslin afterward and if you did something different I'd love to know
Yes! I totally understand, I haven't been able to come up with a good idea of what to do with muslins... any larger pieces, like from a skirt, I try to reuse and I try to use recycled/repurposed fabric where possible to make them, but they generally just end up at a textile recycler.
I think I know my style pretty well. My biggest problem is finding the clothes I have in mind. Fitting, style, color, material -something usually isn't right.

helena perhaps you want to do a warm season clothes and a cold season Style clothes!
So mix both!!!! That would be awsome.
I just discovered your channel but i have liked fashion for a long time. Since you said you wanted to know things that helped defifine a personal style i do have a few:
1: i found a foundation piece that i wear a lot (in my case a plain a-line black dress) and bought a few for different seasons such as a short sleeve, 3/4 sleeve and long sleeve option

Like other people said by eliminated what I don't like helped me more. Also picking clothes in my colors (purple, orange, and green).

This is exactly the advice I needed!
Such a great documentary!
You look amazing in this video!! Really love your channel!!
Thank you for the great information! It helped a lot. :) Now I'm going to start questioning and analyzing my wardrobe. Love your videos!
This is wonderful. I always find your videos so inspiring and also relaxing haha :) xx
For me, it has taken developing a capsule wardrobe to really learn my personal style.
That's awesome! I think it's one of the many wonderful results of having a capsule wardrobe :)
This has been the most helpful conglomeration of information I have found on this topic. Thank you so much!
Love this! Great video again :)
Thanks!
I found this video very helpful. Thanks!
Thanks! Sounds like you have a really good sense of your style :) I agree trying everything on is super helpful!
You are so inspiring! I love your videos! :D
Awesome tips, Thanks a lot :)
So interesting! Thank you a lot :)
great video and beautiful hair xx
Do you have any recommendations for personal stylists?
Where did you get your shirt in this video from? It's so pretty!
You look good in pink. Love your videos
Love your blouse! May I ask who the designer is?
this video helped me a lot thanks😁
i find that the pieces i dont like to wear (but own) are usually low quality (aka fabrics that make me sweat etc). i think, especially with capsule wardrobes, quality is so important.
I agree! Also because the items get a lot more wear, it's nice to have them last :)
Super helpful!
Thank you :)
Could they be used as “interfacing”?
I call my personal style corporate Swedish biker.
haha that's awesome!
it s like reading first few chapters or introduction of a book, not much content in it
What kind of information are you looking/hoping for?
nothing really, just found a video accidentally. sorry.
I don't think the dusty pink look bad on you 😅
I 💖 U
This was really helpful! Thank you
Over the past year I've been obsessed with "finding myself" and I'm definitely getting there
