    One would have to think the SEC and Big 10 would want a foot hold in Virginia and North Carolina. I am sure NC State and UNC would both be ok with 1 in the Big 10 the other in the SEC. I think NC State doesn't won't to get left out of either if UNC goes to either. SEC should take VT and NC State. Big 10 should take the snobs UVA and UNC

    This is all getting so complicated now. It seems to me what happens to the Big12 and ACC is actually up to what first happens in the B1G and SEC.
    The idea is floating around that they may attempt to form 2 super conferences consisting of 24 brands each. At this point nobody knows who will be the new 14 additions to form the eventual 48 total. I would suspect the media companies will have quite a big voice in this! I do like the idea of the B1G and SEC each having 4 geographic divisions of 6 schools each. The two conferences would then hold an NFL style playoff with a national championship game at the end.
    If this comes to fruition it seems it would be in the interest of all those left in the Big12, ACC, & Pac2 to then join together to form their own nationwide conference of the next 24 most valuable brands (however that may be determined) forming their own 24 team conference. This conference would develop a similar geographic breakdown with playoff holding their own national championship game on the same day as the Power 2 has theirs.
    That could a fun day of football for everyone. It’s definitely not a perfect solution (it is, after all, an evolution, not a well thought out design) but it is at least workable. It does also bring back and save some old geographic rivalries around the country.

      That would be a fun day for some people and a crushingly disappointing day for everyone else interested in college football. A lot of smaller schools have great fanbases that would get completely shafted

    • @chsmithins
      @chsmithins 10 місяців тому

      @@joeykelly5642 How exactly would these smaller schools with great fan bases be shafted? The great majority don’t compete for national championships now. A Power 2 & Group of 3 could result in less disappointment in knowing there is absolutely no chance.
      We won’t do it in the USA, but it seems assuming this Group of 3 (best-of-the-rest) comes about, let’s dream further and introduce a true promotion and relegation system so that the best of left-outs in the Group of 3 could work their way up thru playing winning football rather than having to beg or whine!

    NC State like any other school needs to do what it thinks is best for itself. If it can join UNC in another conference great, if not then do what it can for survival. The world didn’t end when Texas/A&M stopped playing. It took a while but the Backyard Brawl is happening again. The Border War has some games on the schedule. Nebraska-OU finally got a series together. These schools will all eventually play again. Most of these rivalries are about in state bragging rights and rarely about playing for/preventing the other from competing for a conference or national championship. The ones that are, are already or will be in the B1G/SEC anyway.

Outside of the old PAC schools or maybe Kansas as brand 24, no 12 team will ever get into the BIG. The BIG has women's basketball games that draw better then the 12+4+4. • @toast803
    @toast803 11 місяців тому +4

    John, there are many moving pieces in NC that people need to watch. For example, there's been talk of ECU moving to another conference which would hurt Charlotte who finally have a "local" rival after years going through the desert with the initial breakup of CUSA separating them from Louisville and Cincinnati. That has been devastating to the Charlotte brand and athletics. The BoG will want to protect the NCSU, Charlotte, ASU, and ECU brands as realignment continues. Sure, they may not be the national brands many think of, but they have pride and value worth protecting.
    Shoot, NCSU is sitting on many top-25's, top-10s right now in the non-revenue sports. They have a complete athletic program sans MBB right now. Why the hate? Why the general dismissal of this program? They even have hockey and lacrosse waiting in the wings ready to elevate, but follow good financial prudence when budgeting athletics.
    Regarding UNC-CH, NCSU, and ACC part of this conversation, it is funny that UNC-CH is not liking politics when it's not in their favor. They absolutely decimated NCSU athletics (especially basketball) post-Valvano using the same BoG. One could argue NCSU MBB has yet to recover their luster of the past because of the "special rules" NCSU was required to follow. Additionally, the state just invested in the ACC to keep them in NC, thus there is interest in keeping it solvent. I suspect this is why NCSU changed their vote. It's all politics.

It just seems to me that nothing happens until the Florida State situation is resolved. Then we'll see how it goes. But I think they're a package deal, regardless of whether they are in the Big Ten or SEC. I would think that we'll know sooner rather than later. I think both schools want a seat at the big boy table, and if the ACC is watered down---well, then, goodbye!

      Last August in an interview, Sankey said in an interview that any future candidate for expansion would need to have two prerequisites for the SEC. First, they would have to be in the geographical footprint of the SEC and second, they would have to give their full commitment to their college athletic programs. Know anyone that may fit those prerequisites?

    The thing that most talking heads leave out is that I doubt it's a matter of NC State and UNC being in the same conference. It's likely more of a way to make sure one isn't left behind in a dying ACC. North Carolina is the 10th largest state, with a population that is very college sports focused. The state and its eyeballs are valued by both the SEC and B1G. I could see a situation where if UNC were to be invited to one, NC State could be positioned to be invited to the other. Again, not tied together in the same league, but one (NC State) not being left behind. Worst case scenario is that NC State goes to the Big 12.
    IMO, with hindsight being what it is, once everyone saw that the SEC and B1G were getting Texas/OU and USC/UCLA. The FB serious schools, along with the large brand CBB schools from the ACC and Big 12 (Kansas/Duke), should've left their respective conferences and formed a new league. It probably would've still been in 3rd place in media revenue, but not in the watered down positions they're currently in. Especially with the Pac 12 dissolving.

    Pick from WVU, Pitt, Iowa St, Colorado, Utah, BYU, Louisville, Arizona, ASU, Texas Tech, Baylor, TCU.
    That's still a strong league that would have a voice. From a FB competitive standpoint, probably stronger than the B1G (who is only in their position because of Ohio State, Michigan, and Penn St, plus generations of loyal midwest fans). That league would definitely be the best in basketball.

    Actually the first issue is whether the SEC or B1G will tolerate the need to be so public.
    I do think that there is a viable plan. UNC goes to the SEC (or B1G) and I believe that the Big 12 will take NCState. Then UNC pays a UCLA tax to NCState, say ten million per year. That makes NCState the highest paid school not in either the SEC or B1G.
    Actually if the two are forced to stay in the ACC, that league will survive. I would expect the powers in VA to do the same thing to UVa and VaTech. So the six VA and NC schools stay in the ACC. There will be lots more teams staying in the ACC, then they can backfill with WaState and ORState, and maybe a couple of G5 teams, if needed.

    • @jansonroberts2616

      I agree, it could easily go that route. The issue is the growing gap disparity between the B1G/ SEC with the rest of D1 schools in their media deals. Throw in the soon to be player revenue sharing model and the gap becomes a gorge for those outside trying to keep up.
