Passed my test 3 weeks ago in a diesel and bought a petrol car. Was stalling all the time and was losing my confidence and starting to hate driving. Watched your video a couple of times and drove 10 miles home in rush hour traffic yesterday with it nose tail for half of it. Clutch control, kept calm and left plenty of room to the car in front so if I did shoot forward too quickly, I had time to stop. I didn't stall once. Was really proud of myself. Thank you so much. Hoping that's the start of getting my confidence back.

i found this when i started driving my own car. turns out that the ford fiesta that my instructor had had an antistall. the antistall was better because it meant i could do busier junctions and roundabouts knowing that i wasnt going to stall but then i got into my car realising that i needed a lot more power to actually move off!
Hi Travis, wish you were my instructor as I'm really struggling with this. I'm 38 now and I first started driving in my early 20s and picked things up rather quickly I remember. I had a really good instructor who taught me the basics well and I was feeling confident. I had around 20 odd lessons I think, so I did make progress. But then I stopped for various reasons and so it's been 15 years now. Anyway, I'm learning in a diesel currently and I'm finding it hard work. My general safety, movement, positioning and control are ok but I keep stalling. Stalled on my first lesson just the one time which is fair enough but then several times on my second upon turning left out of the junction and into the junction and today on my third, I kept stalling at this one junction, slight incline, turning left. I thought diesels were harder to stall! But I think even with those if you release the clutch too soon, you will stall. My instructor tells me to move away using the clutch only when I was taught at 23 to use gas and clutch to find that biting point and then move off which is the traditional method. I remember he spent most of the first lesson making me find that biting point over and over again so became natural asap. As a result I was so much better back then. I don't understand why I seem to be struggling like this now. I honestly thought it would be fine. Anyway, have to say I'm traumatised, my confidence is really low and I'm thinking am I ever to get over this. It's embarrassing enough being 38 and learning to drive but the thought of not being able to now is soul destroying. You feel like a failure.
I would not worry about your progress. But I would ask your instructor to spend more time on your next lesson just working on improving your clutch control. Once you have that under control you will find that you will make good progress. Remember that everyone learns at a different pace, the older you get the more it will take to the test standard.
@@JamesTravis Thanks for the response. I think it's the clutch only method of moving off that is the problem. I'm trying to find the bite using this heavy thick clutch and trying to move off too quickly and then applying the gas and like you've demonstrated here it's not that effective and at this point my clutch control is not good enough. I need to change instructors and go to one who taught me like before - set the GAS FIRST then raise the clutch, biting point and GO because you can do this on any car. I remember my old instructor spent most of the first lesson making me find that biting point over and over again so became natural asap. As a result I don't remember stalling a great deal and made excellent progress.
Hi mate, I was in a similar position to you, first started to learn aged 17, then had a massive gap of nearly 20 years. I passed my test in January aged 38, so don't worry and keep trying. My recent instructor also taught me to get to the bite with clutch then use the gas, when originally I was taught gas first. When driving on my own I use the traditional gas then bite method. The reason for you stalling could be not using the gas or enough gas before you move off. On hill starts you will definitely need ample gas before moving otherwise you will always stall (unless car has hill assisstance). You could try sticking with the same instructor but making sure you use gas after getting to the bite before moving off and on hill starts I would go to gas first.
@@starlouise397 yes thank you for the comment and thankfully I did pass over a year ago. Been driving for a year now as well as got my first car soon after. Really enjoying it although I had a couple of minor fines for entering an ltn and taking a wrong turn. Ridiculous but driving in London does have its downsides sadly. But was going to say looking back I had two terrible instructors, one who taught me incorrectly in his diesel car and the other who spent half the time on his phone. So that set me back.
Really good video, I had a petrol Corsa as my first car and I had the same problems as I did learn in a diesel car. But I did get used to it and liked the car.
If you are stalling as you are moving off on a busy roundabout, it could be dangerous for you. But stalling tends to happen at the early stages of learning to drive and does not happen often when you are test ready.

I've been driving in my first car now for about a month an half the first few weeks I was struggling massively a lot to confidence and then to getting used to the car. The clio I learned in had a bite point that was about half way down and more lenient on hills compared to my fiat 500 I have now where it struggles with the slightest of slants. I later realised the bite point was near the top of the clutch release which is a bit awkward to get used to but realising this helped a lot. Now I'm just stalling when I'm at any junction on any incline and don't really have time for handbrake. Started to use clutch control to hold it here which has helped decrease stalling. Its all about learning the car and building the confidence up. You'll make mistakes or get beeped at and it'll knock you but you pick up and learn and go on.
Thanks you are absolutely right.I,ve been driving my Fiat 500 about two months and thanks god I,m stalling just when im super nerves cos someone follow behind me very close and make me go faster at junctions.Yeah but it took me 2 months to get used the car,and I still do some silly mistakes sometimes but definitely I can control and feel the car much better than before.A'm also not young driver I,m 36.😁
Don’t have that problem with the Mercedes class A I am doing my test with. So easy to drive. It almost drives itself. Unfortunately it’s my instructors car and I won’t be owning one.
Been with three previous instructors. First car was a Golf Diesel, second a Ford and the third one a terrible Reno Clio so I do have some experience with primitive cars. 😄 But yes thank you. Yes I hope I’ll pass. It’s been a long time coming. About 60 lessons by the time I have my test. It’s been a long and painful expensive frustrating journey. 😮💨
I think you just need to get used to where the biting point is and how quickly you can lift off clutch. I would practice in a quiet road stop start. Good luck.
Do what most of us do in the USA. Drive a car with automatic transmission. I didn’t learn standard shift until I was 36. It was a 1991 Mitsubishi Galant
@@JamesTravis it was. I got over 100,000 miles on that. Until the timing belt snapped. I drive a Honda HRV 2022. Great on fuel. I lease my cars now. 3 years trade it for a new one.
@@JamesTravis we were looking at the FIT as well. That must get great fuel economy. Your petrol prices are higher than ours. We’re currently paying $4.05 per gallon. You pay by liter. There’s approximately 4 ltrs to one US Gallon. So it comes out to less than £1 per liter at the current exchange rate.

I had the same problem I learnt to drive in diesel and when I drove the family car which was petrol I really struggled big time.

Really good video, I had a petrol Corsa as my first car and I had the same problems as I did learn in a diesel car. But I did get used to it and liked the car.

That's why I'm confused, I passed in petrol yet I stalled in my diesel three times 😅

I passed in a 2016 corsa and now have a 2009 ford ka and I can’t stop stalling 🤣
They are completely different cars.hopefully you can get to grips with the clutch and gas.
