  • How fast can you make 3 cups of rice with the JBV-S10U rice maker from Tiger?
    In my amateur video, you can see it takes roughly 30min to make rice under the "Quick" setting.
    Nice bells and whistles...
    1. Has a clock. There is a battery inside of it, so the clock is always running.
    2. When the rice is almost done, it will show 3, 2 , 1 minutes left. It will finally beep a few times when complete and go to warm.
    3. 5.5 cups of rice should be enough for a small family of 4.
    4. you can carry it around like a bucket.
    Unusual things...
    1. There is no attachment to put your rice spatula. Instead, they give you a spatula tray that keeps the spatula upright... weird, huh?
    Would I buy it again?
    Hmmm... 30min to make rice is abit slow in my amateur opinion. I believe my old rice cooker did it in around 20min. Still, the rice on first try looked and tasted good.
    Oh yeah.. verdict on the actual rice:
    Pretty GOOD!

    This rice cooker is perfect! I use it only for me ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxviiltW7NlHbp_VL_bLbIkbLAvILVhnia and sometimes me and my friend so the small size is really great for counter space since we never need to make all that much. I have been using it now for about 2 months and it still works perfectly. I use it for both rice and vegetables (better for harder vegetables like green beans and carrots, it made my broccoli way too smoosh-y for my taste). It keeps your rice on keep warm automatically which I really like, and I’ve used a few of the settings, flash rice, white rice, brown rice, and steam, and they all work super well for me, although I don’t like smooshy rice so I’ll usually use flash rice. It’s super easy to clean either in dishwasher or hand wash, and it’s pretty easy to get rice out of the grooves by where the container comes out. I assume this one will last me a long time but if I ever need another I will definitely be getting this one again!

    Some tips:
    1. A lot of people say rice is mushy. Problem is not with the rice cooker. Different brands of rice, even same kind of rice (like jasmine rice) subject to different level of water absorbance. It is due to a lot of factors like where the rice is grown, is the rice new or old (been stored a long time after harvested), etc. The rice cooker only gives a general guidance, and you just have to adjust for the rice you have. The more rice you have, the less additional water is needed. That's why it seems off more from the water level.
    2. Need to wipe out any water outside the inner pot before putting it into the rice cooker.
    3. Wash the rice in another container if you want to keep the inner pot for longer use.
    4. Difference between the old-schooled one button rice cooker and the fancy rice cooker. The expensive rice cooker can deal with brown rice and mixed rice better and it can be slow cooker for meat or making porridge. The one button rice cooker can't do much about these.
    5. Leftover rice I would just put it in the fridge instead of leaving it in the rice cooker. The next day I could just sprinkle a bit of water to make it moist, (sprinkle, not adding another cup) and warm it up again. Easy.

      I'm surprised for $100 the rice cooker is so sensitive for plain white rice. Although as you said. For other modes it works better like brown or mixed rice.
      Hmmm. If I knew this I would have gotten a simple $25 rice cooker. I've typically used inexpensive Chinese rice cookers and never experienced this until now

      Hi,.. I made a video of cleaning the top of the rice
      ua-cam.com/video/L400gHWlPko/v-deo.html
      The top is easy to clean.
      1. Just wipe the top.
      2. There is a black top piece. It easily pulls out.. and you can wash this under soap/water.
      3. Water falls from the top onto the sides. (on most inexpensive rice cookers.. there's usually a catch can... but this doesn't.)
      So.. you need to get again a napkin or cloth and dry up the back sides so the moisture doesn't collect.

      First of all.. a simple rice cooker is not rocket science. Old school ones give you that leeway. I've NEVER had to measure out rice exactly.
      Anyways.. if you don't follow the instructions to the tee.. the rice comes out soggy.
      Also.. as you've seen.. the rice takes FOREVER to cook with a tiger rice cooker. Rice typically takes 10-15m to make. Never have I ever taken 30m+ to make rice... kind of feel like I should just make it on the stove to save time.

    • @aleksdude
      @aleksdude Рік тому +1

      Hi Rifath.
      Unfortunately,.. when you use "Normal" cooking mode.. it's actually normal for rice to take this long to cook. For instance.. if you cook 5.5 cups of rice.. it will take about 1 hr.
      Now.. you have 3 options:
      1. Return the rice cooker and get a cooker that cooks normally (I heard that many japanese rice cookers take a LONG time to cook rice so that it can cook the perfect rice)
      2. You can reduce the amount of water used in cooking your rice. My rice cooker usually makes rice on the wet side... so reducing the water might save you 5-10 min.
      3. Finally, if you switch modes to "Quick"... then it might take about 30 min to make rice.
      To switch to quick..
      a. plug in your rice cooker
      b. press the menu button until the indicator is right under "Quick"
      c. Press Cook button.. hopefully the rice cooks in 30min,
      My wife and I have talked about returning our rice cooker. I'm not a picky rice eater.. but to me this rice cooker has many negatives (that surprisingly people say is normal)
      * slow cooking
      * soggy rice or bad rice after a day or two
      * no holder for your rice spatula on the cooker.

    • @angrymathdude
      @angrymathdude  2 роки тому +1

      You can do the same thing with cheaper rice cookers... I think you're paying extra for the following reasons:
      1. Japanese made rice cooker (I guess it's brand name??)
      2. Cooking made easy. They have plenty of pre-sets to make cooking different methods easier (rather than manually doing it).
      presets include:
      a. Timer (timed cooking.. I think..?)
      b. quick - I could have used this instead.. and I'm guessing my rice could have been done in 5-10min
      c. plain (default setting)
      d. porridge
      e. mixed-sweet
      f. brown
      g. multigrain
      h. slow cook
      i. steam cook
      You can see.. you get so many preset options.. (although.. I recall.. I'd cook brown rice the same way I cook white rice on my old asian rice cooker).
      All in all,.. would I recommend this rice cooker? Hard to when you could just buy one for $15-30 and call it a day. But if you want to run the whole gambit of rice cooking options,.. then maybe this cooker is for you. Again.. my use case is 99% just cook white rice.

Im a bit disappointed as I spent some good money on this, the rice always comes out sticky and a bit mushy, not fluffy. Is there any recommendation for cooking Jasmine rice in this?

    • @angrymathdude
      @angrymathdude  2 роки тому +5

      Hi David, it's funny since one person replied to my video stating I put in too much water.
      There are a few things you can try... and I totally agree... this rice cooker isn't as easy by default as a cheap $20-30 rice cooker. (but you're really buying it for the extra options... which most people don't use).
      I always cook jasmine rice too! Here is what I've tried
      1. After cooking it, you could wait 20min before you open it. This will allow the rice to properly cook (I know.. my old rice cooker I didn't have to do this.) I noticed with this rice cooker, the rice will dry out abit afterwards if you let it sit.
      2. I've tried using less water then required. So if I added 3 cups of rice, I will only fill the 2.5 or 2.75 water line. I had to experiment a little
      3. Maybe try the other settings to see if they cook better. By default, it's set to "Plain". I was thinking of trying "Quick" mode or "Mixed Sweet"
      I agree.. the rice can come out mushy. It's abit sad.. I've left my rice out for a day. In my old cookers.. this was never a problem. But with this rice cooker,.. the bottom gets real soggy... and if I leave the rice out longer.. it gets slimy.
      I've been cooking with less water then recommended. Or.. I've left the cooker to sit so it can dry out some of the rice after cooking. (i.e. option 2 and 1).
      If you don't plan to cook brown rice or use the other features,.. I think it's probably just best to return and get a different rice cooker.
      Hahaha.. the thing that annoys me the most about the cooker isnt' the rice. It's actually the fact that it doesn't have a place to put your rice spatula on the actual cooker. Instead,.. they give you a spatula stand... which I have NEVER seen before. Good luck! Rice shouldn't be this hard.

    • @aleksdude
      @aleksdude 2 роки тому +5

      It's a problem with this kind of rice cooker. It's cooking the rice with too much water.
      1. There is no adequate catch can for the water to escape... the water accumulates at the base of the rice cooker.
      2. Generally.. the rice cooker's estimate is off on my rice cooker. I often use LESS water.
      A. My wife recommends using "Plain" mode over "Quick" mode. She says the rice isn't as wet.
      B. I suggest using less water. So if you're using 3 cups of rice.. maybe use only up to the 2.5-2.75 level.
      4 cups of rice, I usually fill to just past the 3 line.
      Good luck. I haven't had the rice go bad since using less water. The rice lasts about 2 days..

      To be fair... per many comments.. I did use too much water which made the rice soggy.
      So there are two issues:
      1. Rice takes forever to make.. 20-30min on normal mode.
      2. Rice has to have EXACT amount of water... otherwise it can easily be soggy. Actually the reverse is true too.. it can easy be dry and hard.
      The point of 2. is that normal rice cookers have a leeway. This is the first time I've experienced a rice cooker that needs EXACT measurements. note.. In the past I've only used inexpensive $30 rice cookers.
      3. When the rice is wet/soggy.. forget leaving the rice in the rice cooker. It will go bad literally in a day. Again.. I've never EVER had an issue with leaving rice in my old rice cookers.
      4. No holder for the rice spatula to be put on actual rice cooker (comes with an external stand).
      5. Excess water does not have a catch tool. Instead the water drains to the bottom of the lid. Horrible design imo, since it means you need to constantly clean the bottom of the lid after each use otherwise it gets dirty easily.
