My layout ( 16 x 36, 3-levels, has at least 600 ft of track ). Cork is CHEAP, if you watch your prices. I just use cork on my Main Line. I also use Dbl-back, Foam Tape to hold the track down on the cork. More sound-deadening.

I really enjoyed watching your layout tour. you are way ahead of me with your landscaping and modeling. Your work is at an exceeds level. I also have, for some time, wanted to repaint and decals stuff. Have yet to try my new airbrush so lot to learn. Your vision seems similar to mine . We are about the same age. My twenty something son and I are doing our trainboard together ... 2 train guys, and compromise, each with our own vision, is sometimes difficult but running the trains always brings us together. Yes, track ballast does improve the look of the layout and this method helps get the job done. Thanks so much. Gary

NO Cork Roadbed ? That's your First Mistake. Cork roadbed, gives the track some HEIGTH. Also, it's a good Sound Buffer !!

Yes I do prefer the height we get from using cork or the woodland scenics stuff. But, I chose to spend the required more than $800 to $1200 on engines. We have a lot of track . With the atlas track properly secured, I do see any sound difference with or without cork,. Thanks for commenting. Gary
