  • Bernie Taupin wrote the words to many songs you may know by heart. Taupin collaborated with Sir Elton John on more than 30 albums during their continuing partnership. Actor Jamie Bell portrays Taupin in the new biopic "Rocketman." The movie explores that friendship, including their first meeting, more than 50 years ago. Bell and Taupin join "CBS This Morning" to discuss the singer and songwriter's decades-long history and the new film.

Yeah, the writers are pretty well remunerated so don’t feel too bad for them. In some ways they don’t have to do the ‘heavy lifting’. There are some very successful artists who are household names who make more money writing songs for other artists than from the sale of their own albums and tour/merch revenues combined. Song royalties are very good - that’s why some artists always demand a writing credit on songs they perform even if the reality is they contributed very little to its initial creation.

Yeah it’s amazing he could just hear all of it in his head, faster than he could write it, and could see the notes. Some other songwriters have talked about a similar experience , for ex Michael Jackson said songs just come into his head and he could hear all the parts of the different instruments, and he would sing / beatbox the parts into a recorder. It must be an incredible experience

I love it when a film doesn’t spell everything out for you. When Bernie talks to Elton on the plane about returning to England, if you pay attention you can see Bernie is almost falling off the rails too. He just pulled on the emergency brakes far before Elton did. One scene tells it all.

It goes to show how fate or chance plays a part in this world. Elton was a piano player for a band and a composer. He wasn't a singer. He entered a publishing contest as such. Bernie was a young troubled kid on his own who had a talent for writing poetry. He entered the contest as such. The guy at the publishing office handed Elton, Bernie's poetry. Together they made history. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road was written by Bernie in two and a half weeks and recorded by Elton and the band in two weeks. Four and a half weeks to write and record one of the greatest albums of all times. Today albums are made over a year or two and don't even come close to that one. Not close in lyricism, music or sound.

I think Bernie is not someone who retaliates. With the clothes before performing Pinball Wizard, it's one of my favorite parts because I believe it shows a dynamic between Bernie and Elton that all kinds of relationships should have-a empathy and understanding of the other's nature. When Elton yelled at Bernie, he didn't retaliate. Elton caught himself, held Bernie's hand and genuinely said with his heart, "Sorry" and Bernie says, "I know." Bernie's understands the craziness of what Elton has been doing to himself and is genuinely concerned. He's never mad at him. That is a deep understanding of the underlying issues mixed with unconditional love that many of us fail to give. It's so beautiful.

Because Rocketman is the name of the movie, and Tiny Dancer and Your Song are probably two of the most well known songs he has. Producers of morning talk shows and such aren't interested in what his best songs are, they are interested in using the ones that will connect with the greatest number of people.

The one thing that distracted me during the movie was the mole on Taron’s throat. I’d think “were they recreating an Elton feature?” My eyes kept being drawn to it. From interviews, I’ve seen it’s a feature of Taron’s. Other than that, I thought it was great.
