Setting up opposites Rupert such as true self or false self is not the Way. It will only deepen the illusion of duality, where there never was.
If you re-read A Course In Miracles after trully understanding Rupert, you will see they all point to the same rhing using different terms. Terms are just pointers, your intuition will show you the truth. Always.

I respect Rupert and enjoy his videos, but I really do cease to exist in deep sleep as well as under anesthesia.
Agreed the I does cease to exist in deep sleep, but however the awareness of deep sleep remains on awakening to the sense of i am, the awareness is always what rupert is pointing too.
Been under anesthesia i did cease to exist there was nothing, but on awakening there was an awareness of nothing. Its the awareness which all teachers are pointing too.
@@danielreed823 I'm relying on Rupert's constant request that we rely on our actual experience and not our belief. This conversation is about who we are and it even extends to our "continuation", in some form, after our body dies (the ultimate deep sleep). As Rupert would say, right now, as I type these words there is a definite sense of being-ness. It's undeniable. It underlies all passing experience. But where is that quality during deep sleep or while under anesthesia? Yes upon awakening in the morning I know that I was asleep, but the actual lived experience of deep sleep is utterly unknown to me, BECAUSE there was zero sense of being-ness while it was happening. So relying exclusively on direct experience, I cannot say that "I" existed while the body was in deep sleep. How much more so upon the death of this body.
In deep sleep you are aware of the absense. The individual ego body mind is absent in deep sleep, u may expirence this as complete blackness. Same with anesthesia.
In other words your body mind is not conscious, ur body and mind is in Consiousness.

I just cannot wrap my head around Ruperts idea of deep sleep. Obviously "I" - whatever that means - did NOT experience a good nights sleep WHILE sleeping. It is waking up refreshed that makes us say "I slept well". The common, non-enlightened body-mins referring to itself as "I" usually refers to that which it identifies with, that being the body-mind. And so the answer always is NO "I" was NOT there in deep sleep. Only if I can identify as pure awareness, then maybe the answer can be yes. But since this body-mind is not identified as pure awareness... how could "I" claim that and especially: how would it be possible to claim this since the experience has no objective quality. Is Rupert always only drawing the logical conclusion that "you" are present in deep sleep even though you don't have any memory of it?
Same goes for the comparison of going to sleep and dying that sometimes came up in nonduality. Totally understand it but I am not afraid of "nihilating" myself going to sleep because of my MEMORY of waking up after doing that...

You are correct. Waking up and feeling refreshed from sleep makes us say/think "I slept well". Only after the brain comes back online,(so to speak), do you realize if you slept well or not. This is known by how you FEEL AFTER you have woke. But you, I and rupert know that what he is implying is a "god of the gaps" answer. Nothing more. Seek peace and happiness from doing what you want in life. One life here and now. Nothing after.
@@josephoutward thank you. It is also the only perspective that makes sense to me. And an idea i already had as a kid. The whole point of spirituality is to get rid of the fear of death to focus better on life, at least as far as i am concerned. Hope this will happen at some point but as i know from experience while doing what we love this fear seems to vanish anyway👍

All experiences appear in consciousness. Might be during deep sleep consciousness is not modulating itself in the form of finite mind. Can we consider the deep sleep period as a long pause between 2 thoughts( feelings) the feeling of being sleepy and the feeling of waking up refreshed and energrtic. during this long pause the " I " is always present otherwise it can't assume the form of a finite mind when you wake up.
