Several reasons for it. 1: More sounds. (which also includes different toning. Tight on 1, lose on 2). 2: Easier playing. When playing a 4 hits per beat pattern on hi-hat with lots of snare in a fast BPM the left hand can be troubling. This fixxes that.

That bass drum technique is unbelievable. I can see myself playing anything with the hands, but foot thing looks really difficult.
