How To Merge NVivo Projects

In this tutorial, we explore merging two NVivo projects: a manually coded 'node demonstration' and an auto-coded 'Burnout' project. Begin by closing the project you wish to merge into the other. In the receiving project, navigate to 'import' and select 'project'. Numerous options arise; for a comprehensive merge, leave the settings at default to import all content. However, selective imports are possible. Once merged, verify by checking files and codes. Highlighting allows you to view specific coded sections. Hello! Thank you so much for the video!! I have a doubt, when I merged 2 files, but in one of them I delete some information that both files have, that delete information still appeared in the new merged file, do you know why? Thanks in advance!!

You’re welcome Jose!! When we merge projects, NVivo doesn’t delete files but it compiles all the files from both projects.

Hi Dr. Philip, I find your content is really useful! I was wondering if I have multiple files associated with one unit-of-analysis and I want the count for files to only count the whole unit-of-analysis collectively rather than on separate files associated to the unit-of-analysis when I do the coding. How am I going to do it? I have checked the cases and case classification, however, I don't see good examples to be useful in my case. Thanks so much for your help!

Normally, you could create a variable under case classification to group the files under their respective unit of analysis. For example, let's say you are focusing on 10 organizations (i.e. with 'organization' as your unit of analysis) and you have collect documents from each organization, you can create a variable called, 'organization type' and categorize the files under their respective organization. This would help in counting the organizations linked to a particular code/theme.

Thank you for this wonderful video ! I have a quick question for you : if I have two identical projects with different codes, would NVivo interpret the documents as different and create duplicates? I have a big data set and I’m terrified that the codes won’t sync with the documents in my merged project (and I’ll have two sets of documents, each of them with different codes altogether) . Thanks in advance!
