Miles actually used the term "butter notes" to refer to 'fat' chords, which use notes that are not critical to indicating the 'quality' of a chord...for one example, the root and fifth... You are entitled to your opinion, and if you still maintain that opinion after reading ALL the comments on this page, I doubt if even Herbie could change your mind...

  • @UkuleleAversion

Speaking from a jazz piano perspective, I absolutely adore Herbie's comping (jazz lingo for "accompanying")- even in this short excerpt- however Miles Davis was infamous for having very strict artistic goals with each of his ensembles. In this period of his career (1964-1968) his approach to improvisation became much freer harmonically which in turn demanded that Herbie Hancock (the only musician playing chords in this ensemble) play much less since whatever chord he plays on the piano will likely clash with what Miles plays. Another much more simple explanation of Miles' glare is that he wanted Herbie to just comp along with him without mirroring the contours or rhythms of his ideas. Miles' former pianists approached their comping more as a rhythmic device, for example Red Garland frequently just plays on the 'and' of 2 and 4 with simple block chords leaving lots of room for Miles and Coltrane to explore without having to worry about what colours Red will bring out in the harmony. Obviously we'll never know for sure what Miles was thinking when he glared at Herbie at this concert but I think these are the most plausible explanations.

I have heard Herbie quit the band when Miles punched him so there is that…
I heard a story from someone in the group when the late Bob Berg was in the band and Miles grimaced at Bob for overplaying in a space moment and later Bob said “it was so beautiful I had to play…” to which Miles replied: “ it was beautiful cause you wasn’t playing”
I saw Miles grimace at Minu Cinelo (can’t remember the spelling sorry) for playing a virtuosic torrent of brilliant percussion which Miles may have thought was grandstanding- that was a much bigger grimace than the one in this video which to me is overblown.

Having watched the full concert and this clip in the fuller context multiple times, I'm going with Level32SaganCarl expressed. Miles was expecting to go it alone. If you listen to the whole track and the end of the tune, that's exactly what happens, Ron and Miles. If you listen to the tune at Live At the Plugged Nickel, that's what happens. As for the suggestions, you can't know he was angry at, well watch Miles before he gets angry. His eyes are closed and fully absorbed in his playing. if there was anybody off stage to the left, it wouldn't have been a visual distraction, and since I don't hear any noise, I'm going with he was perturbed at Herbie because of the angle of his glance. Watch the wide shots. Even if there was no prior direction of what to play/or when not to, I get the sense from the momentum of Miles's line that he was going to answer his own chromatic run and it "felt" like Herbie stepped on what Miles didn't play but was anticipating and Herbie is not as locked into Miles as much as Miles is locked into everybody else. They don't teach you that at Berkley. Thanks everybody for playing. Door prizes waiting at the door. If only we could solve our geopolitical problems so easily.

So in other words, Miles was signaling he wanted to go down Road A, while Herbie took the band speeding down Road F.
      Something like that, musically speaking?

i think Miles wanted everyone to come in. Whenever he's done that on records and in the concert, ron walks, herbie comps loudly cutting through and tony starts swinging. Herbie probably wasn't paying attention or didnt realize because it was so early in miles' solo to start that. As soon as miles looks at him he starts comping loudly because he knows thats where miles wanted to go but it was too late. Thats why it calmed back down.

Prior to this clip, Hancock also took an uninspired and overly long solo. Miles walks on stage indicating it's time for him to wrap up, and Hancock then proceeds to go on a completely new line of exploration (probably to make up for what he knew wasn't the most exciting playing), leaving Miles standing there waiting. Following all of that, it was the last straw when Hancock butted in on Miles's playing.

Tony Williams response is like "uh oh, I don't think I'm going to the group dinner tonight." Ron Carter gave the "bruh, you alright?" glance to Herbie. This is all classic.
