      Cause it runs under DXVK. The performance on Windows machine can also be drastically improved by using DXVK.

      @liamness 3 місяці тому +51

      Might also be because there is system level frame limiting by default. Some games in my experience (including GTA V) have occasional frametime spikes if you let them run uncapped, possibly because it gives extra headroom for sudden extra bursts (e.g. physics, loading gameworld chunks) of CPU load, so they actually look smoother even if there's a lower average framerate.

      @@ProtectusCZ yup, DXVK was the only way for me to get the game to be playable. Before I patched it with DXVK, the game got about 45-80 fps but would stutter every 5 seconds. After patching, I get 60-100 (no stutters) with RealityIV 2.0, Improved Vehicles IV, and FusionFix. I have a Ryzen 5 3600, RX 5700XT, and 32 GB RAM for reference.

      I have a very distinct memory when I first played this game when I was 12 I think. Not long after my parents had split up and my dad had moved to an apartment in the city in a highriser and got himself a ps3. Playing it late into the night, looking out over the city. It felt so real. Imagining niko running around down there while I was safe up in the apartment. Was one of those moments where I realised how big and scary the world can be. It was very melancholic.

    My older brother built his first PC specifically to play this game, back in 2009. It was an Athlon II X2 240 2.8Ghz, 4GBs DDR2 800Mhz, GeForce 9600 GT 1GB. Ran O.K. at 1360x768 at around 20~30 FPS low to medium. I bought that PC from him around 3 years later, but for whatever reason, I couldn't get the game to run myself. Only around the last bit of life of that PC that I finally gave GTA IV one last go and almost finished it. Than I got a better PC (Xeon E5 2640 v3 3.4Ghz turbo, 16GBs DDR4 1866Mhz, GTX 960 4GB), it ran at around 50~80 FPS at 1080p medium-high, but I still never finished it. Now I have a GTX 1660 Super and a 1440p monitor with that same PC, and GTA IV can run at 1440p very high around that same FPS, which is more than enough. Maybe it's time to finally beat it XD.

    I decided to replay GTAIV with both expansions in December last year. As soon as I installed it on my Ryzen 5 5600 and RTX3070 it turned out it was unplayable. My character was invisible, the mini-map was missing textures as well and the fps drops were insane. After installing DXVK it's become smooth and fixed most of the problems. Then still, some of the ladders in main missions were broken and I had 2 unfixable problems where the game was crashing each time in the same places during main missions - surprisingly it turned out that the game is very much "hardware sensitive" and copying it over to ROG Ally worked both times (once inthe main game and once in TBoGT).

    I confirm the game has issues if you do not lock the fps at 60.
    The only example off the top of my head is a mission where you have to tap the space bar quickly to lift yourself up in a helicopter. If your fps is above 60 you can tap as fast as you want, you are not getting up and are soft-locked from progress.
    After hours of googling the only easy workaround I found was enabling v-sync and using an old 60hz monitor - this caps the framerate at the monitor's refresh rate.

    • @MultiYippee
      @MultiYippee 3 місяці тому

      Yup, on Out of Commission. This actually makes it impossible to beat via BC on Xbox since the Xbox 360 version of GTA 4 only had very soft locks on framerate, so with more modern Xboxes, it'll scale right up to 60 FPS on its own, but the mission is scripted to check for a particular number of presses that would be right at 30 FPS. Interestingly enough, this was actually fixed on PC in 2016 with patch 8, but further patches seemed to lose this fix and so the mission is broken at higher FPS again.
      Also worth noting that higher FPS also affects bikes, so they become super-slidey and awful to control. Locking to 60 or 30 FPS will make them move as they were intended.

    I finally got to play the game in 2011 when I bought a new computer.
    It just wouldn't run properly on the old PC. It was fine for a few minutes and then out of the blue the frame rate just dropped to single digits and would never recover without restarting the game. Did it on all settings. Never found out the reason.

    You can mostly play at unlocked framerates and be fine but keep in mind there are certain game logic tied to framerate which will not work as intended. Example, the garage door for Brucie's car boosting side missions, located at Broker, has it's opening and closing logic tied to framerate and will softlock you if Niko does not exit the garage in time before it closes during a cutscene, effectively forcing you to restart the game to lock the framerate back to 60 if you want to complete it.

    RandomGaminginHD, hello. About the DirectX 9 issue - I noticed that A Hat in Time (a DX9 title) performed really badly in some areas of the game, especially Mafia Town. It seems like GPUs beyond Pascal/Polaris really do not like this old API in general. For example, at some points in the game, I was only getting ~35 FPS on a 6800H 6700M 135w laptop (~95% of the actual desktop GPU, or 8/9ths of a 3060 Ti), which is very low considering it can easily do far more than that. It was performing more akin to a Core 2 Duo GTX 650 system or so in that game. Using DXVK, the framerate usually more than tripled to over 110 in Mafia Town, and the hardware was properly utilized. Thus, it is no surprise that DXVK helped GTA IV's performance significantly and smoothed out the framestutters.

I'd rather go either AMD or wait two years for another tock that hopefully supports a few releases again. Other than that observation its pretty much what I expected, the Cache on both GPU/ SSD / CPU has increased in these last few years. Meaning the micro stutters in loading assets from SSD to RAM to VRAM is a lot less noticeable. I used a RAM disk Util on an installation of Saints row 2 to get rid of as many frame time drops as possible.

    I would say this provides a pretty good experience! it's pretty rare that I will notice any stutters or major frame dips. It's usually only at night when the frame rate takes a big hit, or when going super fast. (I modded most of the cars to have realistic top speeds). Other than that it's often pinned at 144hz 🙂👍
