Folks have been asking me to do this video for a long while as I’d I never wanted to do it, here it is though.. the right way to stretch a hat..
if you must stretch. Don’t expect more than a half size at best, maybe 3/4 of a size…
any more any you’ll have a hard time reaching your goal.
I don’t suggest going this unless you have no other options.
Don’t buy a right hat expecting to stretch it, that’s a big mistake. Stretch to fix a problem hat, but avoid stretching at all costs if you can.

    Thanks man!
I just paid way too much for a cheap-crap felt hat from China, It's going to get modified for a costume, but it came in too small.
This helped me at least get it to fit!
    Thank you!

Kevin I just adjusted stretch my grandfather hat because of your video. I am from Italy and also my family. It was tight to wear, so I just took off the band and the cut the wire with a clipper. After he passed away , I kept in his memory because I used to steal it from him when I was little and wear it. It’s better than any hat I will ever buy. Thanks to you too.❤

Does every hat have a reed? Forgive my ignorance, but I find this quite interesting.

Don’t need to stretch a hat, just need to reshape it from oval to long oval. Pressing the sides of the hat in slightly while wearing it takes it from wearable to pleasantly wearable. Would sanding the ears of the hat Jack down so pressure is applied only to the front and back, steaming the front and back and extending the jack slightly from snug a couple of turns work?

Hat jacks come in a variety of widths and shapes, we use a narrow one, to go long oval. A wider one to go rounder, and a four way one also..a size small/medium hat jack is narrow. a large and XL is wide. They both extend to the same lengths, but the larger sized ones are wider, and thus don’t stretch as oval as a narrower one. No need to sand one down. Just use what you have, stretch it out, and your head will make the hat to your shape, or just stretch it with your hands, longer oval, or pull out the sides to make it rounder, that works well, actually..

Hi Kevin, my problem is that I’m a hellacious long oval. So my hats are all the right size in the sense that the wire in the band does not need to expand. It just needs to give me a little more room in the front and back and a little less room in the sides. In a case like this, where I’m just changing the SHAPE of the wire and not it’s length, do I have to cut the wire? Could I steam the back and pull it or should I steam the sides and squeeze them inward? Just so you know all my hats are western Stetsons, most on the stiff side. Please let me know? Thanks!

      No !
Start watching Kevin restore old hats on his channel, you can learn a lot, and hopefully you’ll be able to do something that won’t ruin your hat . But stay away from the dish soap .

I remember one of the first things I learned from your videos: never ever stretch a hat. Obviously you can do it correctly but I wouldn’t be able to do that without going through a lot of practice hats. 👍☮️🌞🎸🚴‍♀️💙

Very true, I prefer not to . But we get folks w hats they just can’t wear, they collect dust, so they’re ok with the damage and side effects that come w the job, it’s better than nothing they figure.. personally? I don’t stretch my own hats, I cut out the leather sweatband instead. One of my green hats, the one I wear 99% of the time, has no more sweatband
