'Give yourself permission to start again', what a great way to describe the personal reset that we sometimes need. Thank you Sean for another inspiring video, long may you continue.
Oh man, oh man ! Somehow Sean seems to always release those videos in the times I most needed to hear them. This is exactly the boost of motivation that I needed as I’ve found myself in that place as the new year started. Thanks a lot Sean for always bringing value to your community with these insightful videos. Your videos mean a great deal for a lot of us. I’m grateful for you Sean. Keep it up 🙌
Symbolic restarts are important. As a young man all my mentors wore hard hats and work boots. At a very low point in my life one of them took a knife and cut my bootlaces in half, straight up the middle. Then dropped a new pair of laces at my feet and said " same boots, same you, new situation. Now lace them up and get going"....I appreciate the work you do and the good it does for all who see it.
Sean, your content always calms me down wheneve I feel overwhelmed by my works. Yes, through your videos, I made myself into writing and authoring books and novels. And here I am, asking myself whether being a writer is truly my call or not. Thank you, your words always helps me to find peace and keep going.
You have many gifts Sean! Give yourself permission to start again is so powerful and something we all need to hear on occasion. Thank you for continuing to share these incredible videos 🙏👏
That's exactly what I was thinking about, leaving it all behind, by giving myself a little bit of time, I realized what you said, never make a big decision when you're feeling low.
Thanks so much, I started Photography a few years ago and I just turned 62, there are some changes on the horizon and this is what I needed to hear NOW as the saying goes if you are paying attention you will hear what you need. Thanks 🙏🙏🙏
Thank you Sean. It is a powerful reminder, not just for artistic journeys but for many reasons the new year sometimes hits us harder than others. Wishing you all the best for 2025.
Extremely Timely Sean... Wow... how you showed up... top in my feed... a couple of days into my own personal crisis... ... YOUR WORDS... so spot-on... just utterly amazing... I AM resilient... Thank-you Brother!
I always enjoy listening to you. Actually, the more I listen to you, the more I'm convinced that photography without philosophy is like a body without a soul - it may look beautiful, but it lacks depth and meaning.
You made this old girl cry. Thank you so much Sean. Getting up from life‘s challenges used to be so easy but since I lost my brother to CVD in South Africa (my only sibling), it‘s been as if the wave was just too high for me to come back up and breath. Photography that brought me so much joy, now just is a reminder of how much I lack. The slump is very real this time and I am on a road to finding my way back to my love. You are always helping us and I hope that you too have someone who helps you. It‘s not easy to keep the joy with so much happening around us.
Thank you for continuously putting out the most enlightening and motivating content. I’ve needed to get things back on track in my life as I become a husband and a father and while I feel overwhelmed with everything on my plate it’s good to be reminded that theres always time to make that happen.
Perfect timing, and an evergreen subject tackled by one of my favorite speakers/role models. Thank you Sean, and I'm glad you tied that knot at the end of the rope. All the best in this year!
"the next year, on paper, is looking pretty good..." - which paper is that? I want some of it. "Courage doesn't always roar. Sometimes courage is the little voice at the end of the day that says I'll try again tomorrow." - that's the greatest thing I've seen in a while. Thank you for that streak of light!
As always, inspirational, eloquent. Even your body language, the way you sit leaning forward, enthused about what you are sharing, is a gift. I would add one other thing, that helped get me get stay the course and fall in love with photography even more: support from other photographers, who listened to my kvetching, let me douse them with my doubts and fears, and then just talked me through the points you mentioned. It has been about 7 years since my last episode of "drop out doubt" and now, when I start to feel it coming on, I simply let it happen, knowing full well it will pass because of all the positives you mentioned. I have faith in my talent and my joy in practicing photography. Thank you.
Thank you for this! I'm in this period right now and it's been tough weathering through. All of your videos have been very helpful but this one has helped motivate me to not give up. The mention of rededication really resonated. Cheers.
Although this is a 13-minute video, each point deserves time for reflection to fully understand its meaning and relate it to our own situations. I find myself deeply engaged, yet sometimes lost due to the depth and weight of each point. Thank you for helping us.
I'm very sorry for your loss Sean. Your grandfather sounds like a formidable man, and great source of inspiration for you. This was such a great talk Sean, I love the examples you cite and that word Tenacity. Yes, that's the secret sauce.
Sound, solid advice served in a soothing and encouraging way, like that from a caring friend. Reminds me of a favourite Calvin & Hobbs quote that I love... "the sun will rise and we will try again". Thanks.
Thanks Sean, One thing I'd like to mention. I enjoy your videos, not because of the technical content (although that's there too!), but because you speak like a decent human being, it is easy to connect with you and to empathize with the things you are sharing. Keep going and know people out here appreciate your time and work and talent.
Sean, this is so timely for me! My motivation of late has been wanting! I haven’t been impressed with my work! But we have been on a great journey and I will keep this in mind! Cheers from Australia 🇦🇺
Photography can feel overwhelming at times, but it’s important to remember why we started. I find Sometimes Taking a break for me is what is needed. I feel it’s all a part of the process. Wanda
Thanks Sean. It’s mid January and this video popped up on my feed. And I needed it. Please keep making videos like this as it’s common knowledge you serve so many in the photographic community. Have a great year. May the road rise with you. Jimmy
Wow. Great topic. As a part-time photographer who doesn't have the time to dedicate fully yet, I see the logic in comparing myself to my prior self and see my improvement. That really helps keep my journey in perspective. Thanks!
Happy New Year, Sean! I just wanted to take a moment to thank you for the content you share on Instagram, UA-cam, and in your books and magazines. The past few months have been really challenging for me, and photography took a backseat, I just didn’t have the motivation to do much. Thankfully, over the past few days, things have started to feel a little brighter, and I’m beginning to find some hope again. One of the things bringing me joy is slowly getting back into photography, no rush, just taking it one step at a time. It’s been a while since I’ve taken or edited anything, but catching up on your videos has been helping to reignite my motivation and passion for the craft. Thank you for everything you do. Your content has made a difference. 🙏🙌
I could do with someone like you co-facilitating at my retreats. Your message is universal and not limited to photography or art. Keep being a lighthouse buddy 🕊️
Wow. This is definitely one of your best videos so far, Sean. It sucks that you got on the edge of giving it all up. But at the same time it kind of feels good to see/read that I'm not the only one. Of course I know that everyone struggles from time to time, but in those moments it feels like I'm the only one. Awesome video in any case. I got to say the thing that helps me a lot in moments like that (which happened lately more than I would like) is one episode of Art of design on Photography about the Greek photographer Platon. It always gets me back on track and inspires me more than anything else. Thank you for the story. Cheers 😉
Thanks man. Really needed this. I’m at the crossroads and have been contemplating if to continue with photography or not. I’m going to give it yet another proper fresh go.
“We’re not defined by the results, it’s the process. If you did the best you could to be the best you could be, you were successful, regardless of the results. Just like a dandelion breaking through cement, a little bit of pressure every day. Stay positive, stay in the process." Vince Vaughn, actor and tenacious human being.
Same thing happened to me in December. Today was my first day back to photography and believe it or not, it was a conversation with chatgpt that gave the courage to get back out there and photograph. 😅
This struck a chord Sean as I’ve found myself in this exact space the last couple of months. Don’t know why it happened but just finishing up a holiday and the measures you spoke about are what I have done over the last 2 weeks especially the looking down and then looking up analysis. Now looking forward to returning home and recommencing my artistic journey with a much clearer head. Very much appreciated your words of wisdom on this subject
Thank you for this motivating video! Having a UA-cam channel was my dream, which I finally accomplished in year 2020. However when I got a job in the middle of 2022, I couldn't continue with that anymore. I kind of came back in 2024, but I struggle a lot to find time to continue. Your video reminded me, it is even worthier to overcome a higher level of difficulty. I won't give up! 🌸
Good advice sir! I just watched a thoughtful video by Rick Bebbington overlapping some of these topics. You Brit photographers are a contemplative lot! Good traits to have!
Well said. Well taken. I'm in a bad place. I've been going through some health challenges and haven't picked up a camera for 3 months. I've even toyed with the idea that I might as well give away or sell my film cameras, since in my mind I won't be doing much with them. Bam! What you've said hit me between the eyes. That would be a stupid decision made for the wrong reasons at the wrong time. Your suggestions to give yourself a reality check is a good one. Thanks.
your videos are excellent, but man... if you uploaded in 4k they would be gorgeous. :-) i realize there are reasons not to (storage, editing, etc.) but with a 4k display it's less the resolution and more youtube compression at 1080. it's very blocky with horrible shadow gradients..... either way, love you Sean! keep making great content...
I am grateful for your gift for speaking. You do not just motivate people in their photography, but in life situations as well.
Totally right, just today I had a bat day and this video came up!

Thank you Sean …I needed this. Almost rock bottom at 62 in UK …keep up the great work you are gifted and most sincere.

Wise words from a wise man. Perfectly expressed.

I love this video and the message. It has come to me at the right time, and I am sure others feel the same way. Thank you Sean.
A lot of this advice is true for normal work / life - not just creative. Definitely appreciated Sean!

Spoken from the heart and really struck a cord in my heart. So positive from a personal as well as a photographic perspective. Thank you.

Tenacity! Indeed. My 96 year old mom says a similar word in spanish - "ganas!" Thanks for the great video and happy new year!
