Nice to see somebody else use Plott Hounds for Bobcats ! My Great Grandfather, Grandfather and Father kept our strain of Plott Hound that wound up being mostly from Evert Weems x Larry McKenzie bloodlines. Butch x Jill, Weems Plott John, Blue Joe etc. My Grandfather was mostly responsible for what bloodline we fed and carried to the woods, my Father and I added some of the later Weems and McKenzie bred Hounds to the bloodline whenever we needed an out cross to keep our line breed healthy even those Hounds had Weems and Larry's Dogs in their 3rd or 4th generation. My Grandfather knew an old lion hunter in New Mexico and Southern Colorado who had some really ATHLETIC, perdy as hell Brindle Plotts that were a dukes mixture of Plott Hound Bloodlines but they all were from local guys he knew that kept registered pure bred Plotts...and when Grandpa needed an out cross this is who he went to and either buy a nice young hound from this old timer or that guy would direct him to a hunter he knew well that had a hound that maybe Grandpa could get bought or breed to. We wound up with long legged beautiful looking Brindle Hounds with very little white on them anyplace, not that it bothered us at all but they just never produced any Pups with a white spot bigger than a .50 cent piece on their chest and we had a couple that had a white toe or 2 but never anymore than that. We had one Treeing Walker that came from south of Springfield Missouri from a well known Walker Breeder that would leave a hot coon track to cold trail and tree a bobcat so My Dad wound up buying him for next to nothing and after he had treed more Cats than I can remember as a kid he got into my Dads Lead Females pen and bred her, Dad let me keep all 4 pups that were born from that cross and they were some of the most mixed up colored Hounds we ever had but man could they tree a cat. Dad was a purist and was a die hard Plott Hound Guy but me as a 14 yr old kid just wanted my own Hounds to cat hunt with....(,they would tree squirrels and Laid up Coons in the daytime) .....and kept me in the woods hunting instead of running around chasing girls and getting into trouble....but boy when it got cold and the snow fell they knew instinctively what they were to do. I never ran any Bear with them though I could have with Dad and Grandpa but they always picked on me for keeping them ( always in a good natured way to be sure though) but it still would make me mad so I just never took them along on Bear Hunts in Colorado when it was still legal to run Bear with Hounds there. Gradually they got killed or died of old age and I never bred any of them, though 3 of my Grandpas old timer Lion Hunter buddies brought females of their own mixed hound breeds to breed to my males and boy did they raise some whiz banger Pups that got Lion and Bear Hunted all over the southwest and west. As my original dogs from that one litter died off My Grandpa and Father replaced them with my pick of the litter every time they raised a brood of Pups. So I wound up with all the Pack by time I was in my early 20s and both Father and Grandpa had passed away. Sadly though we fell on hard times and I had to sell every one of the remaining hounds due to where my family and I had to live and work. And what is worse is every one of the old guys I can remember from those glory days of my youth are also Treeing game in Heaven so all those years of work is gone now....I cant find any of our blood lines anyplace. So now I'm in my early retirement and able to have a couple of good bred Plotts to tree Bobcats and Lions with here where my wife and I live now.....I have just about given up trying to locate a pair of Hounds. So it's looking like My days of making that one last tree are coming to an end. Thanks for taking me along while you enjoy one small part of what Plott Hounds are born to do. R.C. Charlie Hill.
Sam do you set up any type of bait stations to try and get the cats coming to them regularly? Also do you use any snowmobiles with dog boxes on them? I’d be interested in seeing a sled setup if you have one. Thanks!
Sam I know it's a lot of work but thanks for bringing us along. There's no snow where I hunt so I enjoy the concepts of hunting in the snow. It's rare to tree a bobcat where I live they usually loose the dogs when the circles start tightening down. But we do tree one once in a while.
Thanks for sharing your hunt. I am a subscriber that has been following you for tips on training my 2 redbones. What caliber do you use to dispatch the cat?
do you ever sell finished dogs i live in the adks of Ny and we have plenty of cats but no one really hunts them with hounds in my area so idk where to get a cat hound

Good video. How are the dogs doing after the cat on last video when you had to take them to the vet
Great. Thank you
Where were the hounds when you first showed the cat up the tree?
