5 Days Solo Camping & Fishing in Canadian Wilderness
Вставка
- Опубліковано 13 лип 2024
- After an epic failure on a solo camping brook trout fishing mission into an unknown canoe route, I had to come up with a plan B. After some quick thinking I realized I was only a couple hours away from a piece of paradise that I hold near and dear to my heart: Diablo Lake. I revisited the first part of the Steel River canoe route and once again had to conquer the notorious Diablo’s Portage. But it was totally worth it.
I got a little taste of everything on this trip from wildlife encounters to heavy rain, beautiful sunsets, delicious camp meals and the exact type of fishing I was looking for.
I’ve linked a “Buy Me a Coffee” below for anyone who would like to make a contribution that helps me cover the costs of making these videos:

1:35 Saying sorry to a Moose is very Canadian of you! 🇨🇦 ❤
Hahaha!
Your reaction when you startled the moose was priceless! So awesome to see them. Great video!
Hahaha a bit startled for sure, thanks for watching
"...I've got a bit of a problem on my hands. This canoe route doesn't exist." Love it!
Hahaha sometimes those are the best trips
Last year, the Diablo portage was a major milestone. This year you made it look like a casual hike! It is amazing watching how far you have come in just one year!
Was Deckard Cain there?
"Stay a while and listen"
i just love your videos man
This warms my heart man thank you!!
Merci pour l'aventure !!!
Such a lovely bit of camping, Ben! Even though your initial trip was found to be impassable, the pivot to Diablo Lake was a great call. We wonder how the reverse portage was down the steep incline/decline of the Diablo port was...downhill hiking is no easier than uphill, just different muscles working super hard. Another beautiful video, friend
❤️❤️
Loving all your videos. Thank you for sharing your authenticity passion and taking us all along with you!
❤️❤️❤️
Good job staying flexible and figuring out another trip! Sometimes it’s hard to make those call instead of trying to do the impossible or giving up entirely. Your perseverance and positivity are truly inspiring. When you brought that first trout up into the boat my 8 year old daughter said “nice brookie!” Thought you should know! 😂
Hahaha that’s unreal… “nice brookie” sounds to me like somebody who’s being raised the right way. Thanks friends!
Good Lad. Well done. Thanks for sharing.
Subbed the second you lit that fire with a lighter. Serious terrain, and great attitude about the conditions. Thanks for having us along!
Appreciate that! Thanks for watching
great effort dragging over all those log jams. I think the baby moose was only a few hours old, mum was probably resting. What a special encounter
Thanks a lot, a biologist family friend said the same thing - you’re absolutely right
Another fun video to watch. Nicely done!
Thanks a lot!!
Wow! That sunset was gorgeous!!
I think you are right. You probably are the only person to portage up and back down Diablo! That ending slideshow with the music lined up perfectly
Hahaha thanks fellas!
That look was priceless!
Ben, what a great trip. The moose were awesome early on and those trout were spectacular! I'm envious of that fishing. Cheers from Alabama!
Thanks a lot! Cheers :)
Great job brother! Im working up the courage still for my first solo camp! Big props to ya! Stay safe
It’s not for everyone, but if you’re thinking about it I say try it out and see how you feel. Start small - you don’t need to go to a super remote place. It’s a totally different type of experience when you’re alone, true solitude is hard to come by these days and you’ve got a way better chance of coming across some amazing wildlife.
If you decide to go out let me know how it goes! Thanks for watching :)
This looks so nice! Going on my first canoe camping and fishing trip tomarrow here in Sweden 🇸🇪 hope i dont find alot of fallen trees on the narrow stream im going up through two lakes 🥲 looks so narrow on google earth i just hope i can fit the canoe 🛶
Right on! Have fun and be safe
Good job! TY!
Fantastic videography!
Love Diablo! I gotta get there asap
Nice save you sure worked for that one!
Thanks a lot!
Excellent 👏🏼
I was worried we wouldn't see any chilly on this trip, i should know better its your favorite. Nice photos at the end it really ties the whole adventure together. Keep on paddling!
Hahahah this is hilarious, I wouldn’t say it’s my favourite but a long time ago I dehydrated an absolutely truck load of it and I want my money’s worth lol
Making lemonade from lemons, and ended up tasting like fine wine 😊
Thank you!!!
love it
Very nice my friend😎
Good stuff Ben 👍
Thanks Borys!
Well deserved fish. Anyone willing to do that much work and suffering deserves nice fish.
Hahaha thanks a lot
Always superb video!!! I am new here, nice to connect
They probably didn't see or hear you coming because they were drinking and the flowing water may have drowned you out. It's how I was able to get one of my only photos of a wild bobcat.
Good call, and bobcat photos sound wicked!
👍👍
Cutting firewood towards your leg is not advisable unless you like helicopters!
This is very good advice haha. That was more an illusion of a camera angle, my mom watches these videos… I know better than that lmao
Nice trip ! doesn'tmatter if dont end up doing what you were supposed to do! the adventure was awesome !!
do you also speak french or it's just your last name lol !
Thanks a lot, and I always kick myself, I used to be fluent in French but now barely speak it at all
Ben, have you tried any of the EGB spoons? I’ve had luck with them but not in Canada lol
Not that I know of, I’ll have to check them out!
Nothing beats a steak on a log

Deleting comments that are not malicious, or hurtful in any way is a recipe for failure. The market you are attempting to further saturate is captained by those that aren't afraid to recognize their shortcomings and actually make strides to improve their approach. Get a net. Stop dangling fish. Pinch your barbs when you are practicing catch and release. Stop deleting comments that aren't full of hearts and praise.
Easy there PETA
Deleting comments makes no difference, remember what a dink Joe was and how successful he was? 😂
You’re not wrong.
Hey man I’ve never deleted any comments whatsoever, matter of fact I posted this video and then took off on another big trip with no internet access. Not sure what you’re referring to. Every fish that I didn’t eat was released safely back into the wild
UA-cam deletes comments automatically, usually for no reason.
Well that’s made my Sunday.
I only watch your videos on tv, the phone does them no justice. 🤙🛶
