The closing down of farms is worldwide. Food security ought to be everyone's first priority. If we have worldwide food shortages it will have been deliberate.
Yes, food security is of the highest importance but food cannot be grown on a dying planet. We can adjust our eating patterns and habits. Not all food producers, manufacturers and makers care about the food - it’s just a commodity to acquire wealth. Is soft drink such an important “food”? That’s where the majority of sugar is used for. One consumer shift in their diet will make a difference to the environment… and their health 🤷♀️

Pretty sure all states/territories have Labor in (we don't count Tassie), but there are still electorates (e.g. Bowman, which contains Toondah) that have liberal MPs who would want such developments to go ahead. We should just ban high rises near the beach; Luke Howarth has ruined Redcliffe by cramming it with ugly high-rises without improving the roads to accommodate for the influx of people. Sandgate on the other hand is a beautiful place, despite being right next door. This is because it's had a Labor MP since 1960 (barring 4 years from 2012-2015), and as a result it's not a disgusting shitfest. I really hope Plibersek blocks the developers from killing a necessary ecosystem in Toondah; the last thing we need is another series of ugly, uninspiring tourist locations on the water so that upper-middle class mums can drink overpriced coffee and complain about how easy their lives are.
People living in 2023 acting like "well the wildlife is thriving just like it was when I was a kid" is fucking infuriating because when they were a kid the wildlife had already been decimated. Its called the shifting baseline effect and its a massive problem, especially for things like fishing population regulations. The regulator will think that the population when they started working is 100%, and will then decide that we can afford to lose 20% of that. In actuality, the population when they started working was 2% of what its supposed to be, because theres been several centuries of decline. Animal populations have been a fraction of what they're supposed to be for literal centuries. When settlers from Europe arrived in the New World they were shocked to see the sheer abundance of wildlife, because even in pre-industrial times human civilisation had cut the numbers of wildlife so much. So none of these people have anything useful to say on the matter, because they're basing it on how much damage it *feels* like has happened. Rather than on how much has actually happened.
Boy do I have some stories, I live deep in sugar cane katter country and talk to these farmers regularly to get property access for wildlife photography. I swear the whole area has lead in the water because they are some interesting characters
It's Queensland. Any community above the Sunshine Coast is the same town with the same four people who insist their local pies are world famous and don't understand why anyone would want to travel anywhere else. You're dealing with generations of indoctrination. You see the strangest things in these communities - Healthcare workers supporting the Morrison government, after they promised to strip the healthcare industry. Farmers, who claim to love fishing and crabbing, against conserving the exact hobbies they claim to love. People who work in the mining industry being against unions improving safety. It's a battle to even try to talk to these people. Any dialogue that doesn't meet their tiny world view is shut down faster than a sugar mill after an inch of rain.
The thing is sugarcane is actually the lesser evil. All the other crop types that are able to be grown in the harsh climate of NQ, and remain financially viable require a lot more fertiliser and chemicals compared to sugarcane eg. bananas, papaya, capsicum, melons, pumpkins - which are all grown up here but on a much smaller scale. Sugar cane grown well with a legume crop rotation during the fallow period is likely one of the best possible agricultural land uses for the local environment and waterways outside of restoring them to their natural habitat. Sugarcane is the most dominant industry because it is a low risk crop that can grow on some of our marginal soils and can still be harvested after a cyclone or flood which we experience yearly (floods at least). Yes there are always cowboys no matter what the industry is, but there are plenty doing the right thing, you just dont hear them speak up as much. Land values up here are going through the roof and at the current rates, it is likely that sugar wont be profitable enough per hectare to pay the cost of the loan, so land use will likely change or you will see a boom in corporate farm expansion. In my opinion both are likely to result in a worse outcome environmentally to the family run farm.
You're so right the only time I sat down to watch maybe a minute of Digimon was when I realized they were going to replay dragon Ball z all over again after the beginning fight of the Frieza saga.
Digimon was and still is awesome. The original English dub of the show handled mature themes and taught me valuable stuff. It's alright that you don't like it, but you just didn't experience it at the right time. I related a lot to the struggles between the main characters and their personal relationships
Yeah yeah the reefs are great and all but this sledging at Digimon has gone too far mate. Digimon was peak 2000's anime and was WAY better than Pokemon at the time. All of the kids agreed that (at the time) while Pokemon had better games, Digimon had a better anime.
I guess I'm a dork too (and not just because I've been playing 40k for 30+ years), as when you were talking about coral in aquariums I was like" All the folks I know who try marine tanks are like "I didn't look at the chemistry in the tank for a day and everything died". So I was sceptical of the ability of those trying to save coral in breeding tanks. The mangrove is probably a good idea. I keep a tropical aquarium. I'm always told about the chemistry of it and the microbiology I need to maintain in the filter system. Instead I just have a pump that recycles the water fast, _heaps_ of plants and a low stock of fish. It's amazing how having a lot of plants helps correct imbalance before it happens. Of course when it comes to the environment, maybe if we stopped mowing down forests, using rivers as sewers and oceans as toilets might be a good thing to. That seems to be completely beyond us though.
Also: for people who whinge about dole bludgers so much, farmers sure are quick to snap up the latest government hand outs that turn up like clock work.

Yeah these green shirts people are the worst, I used to go fishing up in the mangrove systems with my uncle back in the day and some of the fish and crabs we caught were the best ever!

Girls love Digimon!
I come from Vermont (united states), and we also have a problem with farmers dumping sh#t into our water, so glad you're bringing attention to this issue
Back in the minority government days, the Palaszczuk Government's first loss in parliament was on sugar industry regulation. So yeah, if sugar ends up bringing down the government, it wouldn't surprise me.
Good on ya for plugging landcare. Imo the best way that anyone can start making a difference is with a landcare group. Need more young people in the movement.
Missed opportunity calling him Luigi being the taller skinny one that wears a green shirt
FJ, shit take on Digimon, but the reef topic was great to see some coverage. Anyway, I'm from FNQ, and our clan group has been lucky enough to secure Gov funding. We're looking after our sea country, and one aspect of that is tending to our mangrove ecosystems. We're trying our best to rehabilitate our sea country. We regularly hold community events to share knowledge and work with each other as well ✌️
Great barrier reef: too hot to handle🔥 young single corals mingle in a tropical island lagoon to see who can hook up/pollinate/whatever the most.
Ages ago I'd been to the coral experiment on Heron Island where they are growing the mad max universe resistant coral, cool experiments they've got going. Attenborough covered it in his reef doco some years ago now, as far as I know they are having success with it, which is awesome.
Without the world dealing with the reduction of greenhouse gases and pollution - we will need to “Mad Max” EVERYTHING 🤦🏻♀️
And that would be impossible.
Let’s stop with putting a Band-Aid on everything and just deal with the cause and effects of the greedy shhht that the FEW have foisted on us!
Joining and supporting grassroots activists are a great beginning.
Refusing to go along with consumer excesses is another.
Just these two actions happening instantly will make a tsunami of difference and change in the near future.
“Pissing off all the digimon people”
Yup. All 16 of them.
Petition for more aquarium related content. Come on Jordy don't leave us all hanging
Bro, the great coral reef Is gettting an update 1:50 😂
As a kid from a dairy farm in FNQ I was dying laughing at your farmer impersonation 😂😂
And food growers must adjust their methods.

Lettuce pray that Toondah Harbour is safe from the avaricious hands of property developers.

Jordies coming at us straight out of the 80's
Boy do I have some stories, I live deep in sugar cane katter country and talk to these farmers regularly to get property access for wildlife photography. I swear the whole area has lead in the water because they are some interesting characters
8:55 Unmatched intelligence and critical thinking here, simply a cut above the rest.
Actually your most unpopular opinion is your stance against the adoption of nuclear energy.
Digimon was the first many kids got to a continuous storyline for an anime that many kids had. So it's goated for that
It somehow always comes back to a lack of education and people not willing to accept science based information.
I like Digimon and nobody can take that away from me.
Those are some fighting words.
The first 3 seasons of Digimon were really good.
Gah damn this jordies fella only becomes more and more likeable the more i watch
You're so right the only time I sat down to watch maybe a minute of Digimon was when I realized they were going to replay dragon Ball z all over again after the beginning fight of the Frieza saga.
Friendlyjordies appealing to new niche markets, next uploads gonna be about the benefits of hardscaping 😂

Ah yes first they did a march of the green shirts, then they came for reef and the trees good thing jordies is saying something
Saw this as a segment on the last pod and thought "how long til Jordies covers this on the main channel?" Well my question's been answered
Up at 2 am in Colorado!! To watch jordies!! Then get ready for work😅👍🏼👍🏼
tldr; if you see rubbish on the street, pick it up, instead of whinge and complain about it. Unless you're a a green, then you know, do the thing,
Digimon was and still is awesome. The original English dub of the show handled mature themes and taught me valuable stuff. It's alright that you don't like it, but you just didn't experience it at the right time. I related a lot to the struggles between the main characters and their personal relationships
Digimon is the poor man's Pokemon. Prove me wrong!

You better fucking believe I flipped out at the flip
Yeah yeah the reefs are great and all but this sledging at Digimon has gone too far mate. Digimon was peak 2000's anime and was WAY better than Pokemon at the time. All of the kids agreed that (at the time) while Pokemon had better games, Digimon had a better anime.

Sorry Jordan, I can't support you anymore.
You've crossed the line with the anti-Digimon rhetoric
When you start criticising Pokémon and Digimon equally, I’ll start listening 😤😤😤
Did you miss the fact the cane farms use Glyphosphate to ripen the cane that is then made into sugar? Yeah that scared the shit out of me too...

I hope you can curb the sugar growers, but as an American I'd say you're better off relying on cane sugar than if they were growing corn. Most of the 'sugar' here has been replaced with HFCS, and it's killing us.
I see that Jordies has abandoned the minty wrapper jacket and has daringly transitioned to repping Mr Beast colours. Good on ya lad but when do we get another expansion to the Auntie Shelly Cinematic Universe?
