If anyone at WotC sees this - please upload all magic tournaments ever recorded onto a website. I would happily pay a subscription fee for access to a nicely catalogued video library from all tournaments from magic's inception to date.
Back when there were not many sets, it was possible for players to acquire the clean copies they needed for the constructed events they wanted. With the introduction of sleeves, came regulations for the protectors. As time moved forward, it became more and more difficult to acquire the clean copies needed for any constructed event. So the players would move toward using the sleeves more often, then search for clean copies...
Before 2005, most of the R&D were still stuck in the past. So they would force the players to play without sleeves, or be DQed from playing in the Top 8. So the players would either had to rely on their player groups, ask the judges for cards, or say this is an outrage. The practice would be on and off from 2002 until the 2004 World Championships, where they would then do it again. Then in 2005, they Randy confessed to why Wizards did it, which blew the whole thing through the roof.
@@TheOxxCA They mouthed the whole sleeveless policy for the Top 8 in the middle of the 2005 World finals. Also, it comes from talking to many of the now ex-pros, who had to put up with that. It's all in the videos and amongst those who are still around doing other things with their lives. Kibler is the best person to talk to about the sleeveless thing.
@MrsRandomMadeMeDoIt . Most pro players have always played without sleeves up until around 2003/2004 time frame, so you will see a lot of old matches where players don't use sleeves. I don't think sleeves were even allowed in sanctioned tournaments until around 99ish time frame. Don't quote me on that though.
It's always weird to see these old pro tours with them not using sleeves. I remember playing FNM back then, everyone used sleeves. I also remember playing at states and regionals and everyone used sleeves. Was this just something they did on camera? It's especially bad watching old extended matches seeing all those alpha and beta duals getting shuffled.
@reallycalm I do agree with you. The only reason i can see for having your hand on the table during the game is to rest your hand....or cheat a card onto the battlefield, which is totally absurd. Nothing wrong with resting your hand.
This was before the world was outraged by this unsleeved stunt. The unsleeved hoax was in part by the company to force the players to buy a clean set of cards from the same sets before they could play. Wizards would lie about it when it was proven that not all Pros have the money for clean sets of cards for a single event. The practice would stop after 2005 to constructed events. As cards are more expensive that sleeves.
Man havent played in years wanna start up again. Its hard to know whats going on though in a magic game thats casted cant see the cards, and being based only on commentary, unless you know the cards names by heart and what they do. :(

Same here!
Tsuyoshi looks so young here. The battle of two of the best minds in the game. Epic.
You always gotta share the classics. :)
would be nice to see the rest of the match
I don't like how the judge was so handsy when telling fujita to take his hand off the table.
Seemed almost disrespectful.
That judge straight up put hands on that player like dam dude!!
Amazing what technology can do these days... uploading a video file if a game that happened in the past?? no way...
lol why is the quality the same or better than the 2010 pro tour video?

Good old invasion! In my opinion the best edition beside Ursa!

Lol. I said the exact opposite when I saw him at the Hall of Fame ceremony.
It's incredible how much weight he's lost, just like Randy.
i just wish i could see the cards : /
No sleeves. So old school.
Never let Blue-White get set up. :)

@Lestat13TheVampire Yeah. I can't blame him, though, I'd probably laugh, too, after something so ridiculous happening.

wow
@reallycalm Well I guess with cards slight of hand is very easy, so they have to be vigilant.
before or after he lost like a 100 pounds? D=
He can only play one spell per turn, so if he tried to recoil, he wouldn't have been able to answer the voice of all.
Christ, those announcers were dumbfounded that Zvi came back against a rat-only board position?
recorded on a potato
at least they don't shuffle their hands all the time.
blue black ^^
Zvi is so skinny now
Lol i kinda agree
@reallycalm yeah that was rude
