Hello guys,
This is the video that I had in the making for a long time.
In this one I explain how to change the front bearing in the alternators,
which often gets seized ant stuck to the shaft.
In the video there are different methods described depends what tools do you have.
Hope you have enjoyed it and that you will subscribe to my channel.
I came across your video while trying to replace bearings of my Bosch alternator. You were absolutely correct that the front steel shim is super hard to remove. I followed your instructions by shocking it, putting plenty of penetrating fluid and heating up the shim with a torch.
Finally with two screw drivers and perseverance, the shim began to budge and came off eventually.
The front bearing is relatively easy compared to the shim.
Thanks for the tips.
In my old mechanic days, I used to put the bearings in the freezer for an hour or two. After they are frozen and shrunk, they just drop in with no resistance... Good video mate!
Really helpful video. Many thanks. I've been working today on a Valeo which was a pig because, as suggested, the inner retaining plate simply bends and tears when you try to press the shaft out. The bits of twisted metal are then wedged behind the bearing so you have to use a screwdriver through the front plate to bend the twisted metal out of the way so you can actually pull out the rotor shaft with the bearing still attached. I've done that but, as you can imagine, the bearing is well and truly corroded onto the shaft so tomorrow I'll be resorting to gas torch / vice / angle grinder. It's clear that Valeo do not want anyone to rebuild their alternators if they can help it. :-(
Fantastic set of tutorials!
I've just ordered a repair set to replace brushes/sliprings/bearing(s) on my E60.
Much cheaper than the £600 BMW want for a new alternator, plus I get to learn a new skill :)
Cheers!
+Simon Parker 600 QUID! Holy fuck!
Very nice Video. Helped me plan my alternator repair (Audi Bosch). For those of You that have no press I choose a different approach. I warmed up the aluminum case of the alternator and then i was able to knock out the rotor together with the bearing :) I used a piece of wood and a standart hammer. Removing the shim was the biggest pain ;)
Excellent video, shows both WHAT TO DO and WHAT NOT TO DO and WHY TO DO IT.
I got the front bearing off with a slide hammer. Great video you have done thanks.
Amazing inovation a lot of thought has gone in how to get around problems when the shaft has rusted on to the bearing centre 🖒
Thanks for the idea with washers, I just broke my retaining plate and was wondering where to find it. Thank you very much for a detailed videos, you helped me a lot!
Worth mentioning here for the Bosch alternator, if the front bearing is not rusted or slightly rusted the main shaft could be removed just by tapping it out. Spray lots of penetrating oil before attempting this. Try this first before going through the lengths of grinding the front bearing out. As we can see during reinstallation of the bearing later the main shaft could just slide into the front bearing.
Yeah, I lucked out also. There was no rust on mine and the shaft slid out with the core leaving the bearing where it was in the cover. I just doused the bearing with penetrating oil and will attempt to remove it later. Marks videos got me to this point.
you are the man, I'm an alternator wizard now because of you mate
Master Mechanic. Thank you for teaching!
A perfect instructional video. Equal to the best on UA-cam. Very Good. Thanks
Hi mate, very good info. You were right about the Valeo bearing retention plate!
We all miss your great contributions on electrical repairs, good things don't last forever i guess
I like all your videos. Up to detail and as you say doable. Thanks.
Thanks for all this advice , I,ll now attack the Valeo alternator I have , with educated confidence . Thanks a lot , I,ll get the bits from the online shop .
If you change bearings in any alternator, you have to put a socket on the nut that holds the pulley, and give it a firm tap with a hammer.
This is done to loosen the bearings in their casings after being assembled.
If this is not done you are risking bearings seizing from the friction.
Cheers loads for sharing!! Really helpful and well presented/ explained!
Elegancko dzieki ze sie podzieliles wiedza. Sub.
Great tutorial and very informative.
Thank you for sharing.
Found out how it is done. In my case i put the rotor into the freezer and the alternator housing in the oven at 80°C. After 20 minutes the rotor slided in like nothing :)
Cracking the bearing in the vise, are you serious?? that's *GENIUS* .
mine didn't even crack under the press :) The outer ring became bent, but not cracked.
Thankyou, hopefully I can now cure my whiny Volvo!
I should have watched this video before attempting this !!! Tried hammering it out 😂
..you are the bet mate! from now on, I'll buy from your shop to support you!!
damn good video, i was able the replace my volvo C70 Bosch alt because of you... it worked! awesome thank you!
I like this, very amazing. thank you so much for this brilliant skill
Great video. Cheers from NZ.
Hello!
I am about changing bearings on Bosch alternator form BMW K series Motorcycle. It is small and all spaces are very tight. All ready the rear bearing while pulling it out, has destroyed the isolation of slip ring wires to rotor. I am going to fix it with epoxy. Your video has gave me a very precious insight how to remove the front bearing. Thanks a million, I am in the saddle back again!
Great work WestronicsIrl, clear and very helpful.
Very good easy to follow
Great video Mark, thanks a bunch for all the video's and you got my business too.
Great work!!
Brilliant. Thank you !
Thanks for your attention to detail. Another great vid!
Good Job on this video!
Thank you very much for this very instructive video!!
Thank for this video.
Great Tipps
Great videos! It has helped me a lot with my Saab
You sir deserver an subscribe! :) Very good tutorials!
Awesome video! Thank you for taking the time to make it.
Hi Martin when changing the slip ring is there any particular way of putting it on due to the polarity?
Why does the bottom slip ring wear more than the top one. Mine is the same as the one you are demonstrating. I expect that on my Yamaha as the brushes are in concentric circles so the outer one is travelling further per revolultion of the rotor.
I wonder if cold and heat could help with the shim and the bearing.
very good video my friend thank you for sharing I am from Mexico..
Hi very good video
same question what do you mean by tap bearings at the end ??????
Hi, great video, do you have one for the pulley removal for a Bosch alternator?
Got this done thanks to your helpful tutorials. Just wonder though why one of the replaced brushes is much more worn down than the other.
Would have liked to have seen the valeo done.
Hello. I have a vw golf mk3 1.6 petrol AEK motor with 101hp. Alternator model Bosch. I need to know what dimensions have those bearings inside because I need to change them, they failed and make a loud whining noise
Thanks for the good explanation
yea, 100% sure I'll never be able to do this. But nice video.
Ah yeah you could, don’t ever cut yourself short.. you could handle it
thank you for the video. amazing !
perfect explanation...
Thankyou for your brilliant tutorials :-)
You make it look so easy :-)
Thank You for tutorial video .
Thanks man a lot!
I have a denso alternator 27060 (or 28120) and I need to replace the bearings. I found the 17mm ID x 47mm OD x 14mmDepth bearing but I don't know which end is it for?
what's the bearing dimension for front and back for my alternator?
2009 camry 2.4L (non hybrid)
good job and learning. thanks
thank you for the video, its very very helpful!
Good job
Шумахер вернулся.
Why didnt uou put the retainer ring back in, is it not needed ? Because Im doing the same version but i did not see you put that ring back in, i thought it serves a purpose ?
Good work man🖒
Great job! Thanks for uploading! Keep it up!
Classic example of alternator not being tapped after bearing change.
Bearing will seize after so long, situations like that are the cause of the"bad quality bearing myth",over 20 years of my work and thousands of bearings I have changed Ive never seen a "bad quality bearing",just bad fitment.
All what it needs is a slight tap in the shaft that the nut holding the pulley goes (put socket over it),and that's it,it frees the tension.
P.S.:After being assembled ofc.
WestronicsIrl , I've seen plenty of horrible Chinese bearings. Front wheel bearings last 300 miles, German and American Steel will last 400000 miles
WestronicsIrl
Fantastic set of videos. This is why UA-cam is so good for the DIY mechanic. One question: I can't quite place your accent - is it Irish/German?
+Guinea Fowl He sounds like a Polish guy who learnt english in West Cork.
What would you do if you find out the bearing slips into the axis free,in and out...worn axis, any way to repair that or you need new rotor ? Or perhaps new alternator?
Thnx
great video
best vid broo
Sir shaft is so loose ..it is easily seen when you fit bearing and plate..does it affect it working ..
Really nice video but where can I buy parts for a MagnetiMarelli A127-45 or Lucas A127 alternator . I can't find parts anywhere in the US. The link to your eBay store is not working . Thanks !
I have a problem doing this. The bearing doesn't slide off the shaft, instead the retaining plate starts bending. What would you do? Just keep pressing or are there other ways to do this? I don't see any..
Bravo
Thank you
my brand new bosch 12 v alternator (vw bug) is charging erratic. jumps between 13, 10, 15, 8 volts. etc. could i suspect my regulator? the alternator gives current and spins during poli test aswell.
SPECIAL PERFECT !
very good
cool ... well done
Care not to clamp stator in vice unless jaws are protected. Good ideas in removing bearings so as to prevent case stressing.
Good
v nice
I like a lot your videos, you could do someday the Ford Focus 2.0 tdci? thanks
How do you split the rotor please respond i need the copper bad
The best way to do that is to use a gas torch even you haven't removed your retaining washer. Heat up shaft and retaing washer to 2-3 minutes than cool it down with water immediately and you're good. Grinding process is the last thing to do...
Jayesh pandya Rajkot ok
Good job.
Hi the altinator on my Passat is noisy what could I do to fix it please?
Thank you, great video. (y)
Thank you.
Thank you thank you thank you.
:)
Thanks Martin! I was completely in the dark with removing the bearing on a Bosch KCB1 (0124325058), looking alot like the one you showed. I will attempt now...if I can get around working without a press and vice...
Can you help i have a 2001 chevy tahoe 5.3 and im not sure what to do i am experiencing things were the battery gauge neddle will move when im in red light as well the oil gauge neddle and the digital odometer will dimmed and light up to original bright and back and forth also my emergency lights will get dimmed after a while and then my truck wont start. What could it be battery or alternator or something else?
Thanks for the vid would this be the same on a 2003 vw polo 1.2?
hi this video was very educational , but my problem is i have a renault megane11to remove the clutch pulley is it left hand thread or right hand please can you tell me
Hollis Glodon ,did you checked ,some time it top side have arrow mark
Very helpful video. You know what you're talking about. However i have a problem and nobody can give me an answer. My valeo alternator (BMW E34) made a whistling noise at low rpm or high load. However, with alternator cables disconnected, the sound disappeared completely. I bought a rebuilt bosch but it makes the exact same sound! Hope you could give your opinion
Whistling or whining that ceases when the cables are disconnected sounds like a grounding issue. The way you describe it sounds similar to the way a car stereo amplifier will whine or whistle when you rev the engine if it's not properly grounded to the chassis.
Thankyou sir.
Interessante !
At 12:49, I noticed that there is no longer a bearing spacer...what happened to it? Is the new replacement bearing wider to the point where no spacer is needed?
shame you didnt get an answer, it confuse me too.
are you in ireland as i need my bearings done on mine
