  • This is by far the most requested video I've had so here it is guys I hope you like it... literally from teardown to start up with everything I can possibly show you in-between... the last video I had to pull and edit to avoid issues... what a process that is for a 1.5 hr video lol...
Big thanks to Elijah for letting me post his saw and he's another Hotshot wildfire guy and they dont get much more legit than that... the 461s I do all go to wildfire crews and im honored to do it...
If you are interested in the actual numbers and details on the build just email me johnscustomsaws@gmail.com and I can explain... I have no problem sharing... the way I do the piston and machining is different so I can't give out the details of that build of you don't have the ability to machine everything... but im happy to help you out... Like I said there is no "secret sauce" bit it does depend on how you go about it... certain numbers will work for certain builds and I would need to know the details...

    Thanks for watching!!!

Recently discovered your channel through your ms200t port for treeson. Thank you for creating these videos. You obviously know what you are doing and you present the material in a way most anyone can understand it. I have always wanted to get into porting. I have an ms461 so this video is a huge help. Honestly just from watching the ms200t porting video several times I was confident enough in porting my ms461 but this is one better. I have done quite a bit of research but nothing compares to the quality and value of information you present. Thank you

I will be honest i even wondered myself because people were being told by the dealership to do so... i didnt agree but was open to hearing out the theory... but after i opened up a couple that customers shipped to me... (new saws with a tank ran thru at idle)... i will never be convinced its a good method... they had tons of build up and they were running hot... they even had that "hot metal" smell... heat cycles are what i have always done since the early 90s and its always worked great

I used to be a certified Mercury Marine mechanic and one of the first things they told us to ask about if an outboard came in with a dead cylinder and an excessive amount of smoke was "Do you use it for trolling (more important on the 65 horsepower and up engines) and then check the boat for an oil container to see if they were using a oil for air cooled engines or for marine use. Most people never seem to understand that the oil for an outboard engine is formulated to burn cleaner at a lower engine temperature than an air cooled one but I found one engine that was used more for low speed trolling or as a shuttle service for taking people from the dock to their private houseboat moorage that when we pulled the bottom piston out of an 85 horsepower four cylinder you couldn't see where any of the piston rings were at because of the oil fouling. But it also served to cut down on the lubrication of the piston itself and it had beat the skirt up so bad that you could almost put the thing back into the bore sideways because of the skirt shape.

Followed through on watching this video all the way through for ya, learned a lot in the process since I own a 461 and wish I would have watched this first hand. You probably hear this all the time but I'm a self-taught chainsaw mechanic and I've only ported three saws so far my 026, 036 pros and 461. Just would like to say thank you very much for everything that you do and for taking the time to make these videos that are very informative and unique. I'm a fourth generation logger that lives in Washington Pacific Northwest Forks to be specific and I've learned a lot of neat tips from different Legend timber fallers on how to squeeze as much power as you can from your saw and I'm with you for not wanting to just give away all your secrets you've been taught, some of them tricks are worth more than gold in my book. If you're ever in my neck of the woods would love to take you on a tour of the company I work for Dahlgren Log Co. and the shop I work at.We're in the process of restoring one of the world's largest yarders,Berger Mk6 and they own both quite impressive if I do say so myself. There's actually a video we recorded some years back that's on UA-cam I believe it's called flying the cats lol we shot a couple 527 cat grapple skidders over a quarter mile across a valley. I'm proud to say I was the one that made the spreader bar that supported carrying those suckers across. Sorry for writing a short novel but I have to say you are the man when it comes to Saw mods hands down and I believe you are going to make it big it's just a matter of time my friend just keep staying positive and keep up the hard work it all pays off in the end at least it always has for me most of the time with some learning curves along the way LOL.
God bless and be safe out there, JH P.S. Let me know if you what you think of that short logging video

they sure do. When Mazda first brought out the RX-7 a fellow racer here in Northern California bought one new and on one of the service checks he said it was a real monster and when he took it in for the next thing he told the service writer that he really appreciated the tune up, that it would really come alive when it turned over 10,000 rpm's. The service writer turned white and checked who the tech was that left the rpm limiter disabled on the last service.

Just want to say John you got a great Channel and you're going to go places with it for sure I still have a small amount of Subs and have been at it for a few years but I'm not very active for different reasons. The biggest break I got was when aVe mentioned a saying that I use in my videos from while back when I was way more active for a bunch of different reasons. My channel will be back up and running but I'm having some spinal cord issues so I'll still be out of the loop for a little while. Keep doing what you doing man!

I put the chain catch on the saw side too. That way if it gets stolen it's easier to identify.

Can't quite believe I watched all that, but reckon you deserve it 😀 You have some mad skills and knowledge. Respect.
UA-cam ain't easy. Can't tell you how many times I've thought of getting into it and failed for one reason or another. Content and camera work. It's multiple skills at once. Keep on keeping on and, yup, people are 100% goofy! 😂

Good work John. I would encourage you to talk to Buckin' Billy Ray Smith for a test run. His endorsement would be seen by thousands overnight. Great exposure for your channel. I'm a first time viewer myself and a retired auto tech so appreciate a little old-school custom porting. Takes me back to my track days. Good luck Pal

While others may not, I would recommend caution with the buckin billy crowd.. Sure, it will be a lot of overnight exposure, and possibly a serious boost in your endeavors.. but it will come at a cost.

Sporty rick here from WLS... The original Saw Nazi 23 years.. hanging it up in 2 months, yes baby retiring!
Just wishing you good luck... Like what your doin, but if doin production speed up the process, slapin the pin back in flip saw on starter side look down into the piston to align pin, also polish the baffle and sharpen the top edge of it.. stay away from raising the exhaust port too high, you want the pop to give as it will give.......................... cutters will be very thankful for the next gen of power hungry saw guru's
Tomorrow have 5-500i's a 881 and a 460 in new condition Monday's not going to miss them!

The parts of stihl saws that retain the fasteners do so so that they don't end up lost in the duff. If changing a plug on your tailgate or a stump people tend to drop stuff
