Ok honestly this movie is sooooo underrated! I had never heard of it till a few years back. Had seen it on Netflix and decided to give it a try. This is honestly one of my favorite movies! I cried so hard at the end. His character stuck with me after this movie. I couldn’t stop thinking about this movie and still can’t. 😭😭😭

The entire point of the movie is that Keith walked a line between just trying to enjoy his time with someone he could playfully antagonize...one that maybe he had a crush on. He never intended it to get as far as he did, and as he started to catch feelings for her he tried to back away. He knew what was coming, and he knew the wreckage it'd leave in his wake. He never wanted to hurt Natalie, and he certainly never expected for him to fall for her.
Natalie barged her way back into his life showing him that some things were more important than just waiting, some sacrifices were worth making. They sleep together and Keith pushes her away because he knows how much this is going to hurt her. Once she finds out the truth about Keith it becomes difficult for her to reconcile the fact that he hurt her with her understanding of why he'd done it. The 'Goodbye Scene' was the perfect way to end the movie. He tries not to do it, because he's scared of how he feels. More succinctly he's scared of hurting her more, knowing that how he feels is selfish, and knowing the pain it's going to cause when he's gone. So, he lies to her. Twice.
First saying that he hated her and that he was trying to bring her down to his level of misery. He tries to invoke the very real truth that in his quest to keep her from getting hurt, he inadvertently altered her plans for her future. Grades dip, tennis rankings dip...scholarship is likely pulled.
Second, after she shows him that she's unphased by what she knows is dishonesty, he tries to lie to her emotionally. Invoking the fact that he slept with her and then tried to bounce. Like he only intended to use her as a piece of meat. When she assures him that while he says he saw her like that at the time, she refuses to believe it...and that she had fallen for him. She was in his corner. She wanted him to fight so they could be together.
Finally, he tries to walk away. He wants to get out of there because he knows his mind and heart are at odds. He knows the road he has to walk, and he doesn't want to drag her along with him. He can't reconcile that that is a road that while terrible and...painful for the observer...is a road some people ARE willing to walk because of how they feel. So he stops. He turns around and in a brief moment of pure honesty, he confronts all of it. He tells her he was depressed. He was just looking for a quick way to pass the time so that he could bridge the gap until it happens. He tells her that meeting her changed everything, that she's amazing. Then he gets to the crux of the entire problem: He wants more time. For her. For life. So, while she's everything to him, he also laments that the one thing he'd long since reconciled on had changed because of her. He doesn't want to go. He doesn't want to leave her. But he does. He walks away. Their final goodbye. Keith having been completely honest with her and knowing the pain that awaited her if he stuck around. He walks away.
She'd already resolved herself to put her head down and weather the storm with him. So she chases him. Tells him she loves him. Tells him that she doesn't care how much time they have together, she was going to be there. To accept it. To realize he deserved it.
At least, that's my 2 cents. Great movie though.
I loved this movie, when I watched it back in high school my junior year it really somehow prepared me for the life of high school I had. Now I’m 19 and I can’t wait for what else life has to throw at me. ♥️

You know what was kind of heart-wrenching was Keith made left to Natalie in the back of his truck and then he then treat her like crap afterwards but he was just doing it to push her away because he knows he's dying and won't get to be with her but at the airport when she goes to stop him she convinces him that she still wants him either way and there's nothing he could do to push her away from him I just love that how she just stood up to him and told him the truth
