As someone looking to break into Project Management, I found this so helpful. But, what drew me toward writing this comment was - I know that as a content creator, a LOT goes into an 18 minute tutorial like this. And your ability to translate complex information into easy-to-understand language (not surprising from a Project Management perspective) is fantastic. Keep doing what you do!
This is excellent. I particularly liked the answer to my technical background. The right answer is it shouldn’t matter because that’s not the key to a successful project. It’s also a clear sign that the interviewer doesn’t understand project management. Technical expertise, especially in a specific project solution, comes up a LOT. The challenge is how to state that the PM is not supposed to be the SME and the solutions come from experts on the team.
Thank you for the comments! Don't ever be afraid to speak the truth (politely) during an interview. Many interviewers are not as prepared as they should be and make mistakes. It's ok to show that you know what you are talking about.
Thank you for the insights in this video; especially the part that talks about what PMs do - what happens on the ground, day in, day out: Set up a project, Assign task, Collect status, Analyze project data and Reporting
Wow. I recently applied for a PM job. It was a position that opened up at my current company. I was absolutely floored to learn that I had been doing this job for over a year in a different title. I have an interview on 7/10/24. Thanks for the advice! Ive been rewatching and digesting all of your tips. Ive watched a few pm videos. Yours immediately stand out. Keep it up!
Thank you!! Is really helpfull for me. I have the experience from the field leading teams and executing project and now I decided to step up and be a PM. What I need is the right certs of PM to start taking the course.
I am so glad I found your channel. Great Stuff, you are so good at breaking down Project Management into simple, digestible, easy to understand topics. You cut right through all the nonsense and give get right to the point. I wish I found your channel before my last interview, but I wasn't as prepared as I could have been. But with your help I will be ready for the next one.
Key question "weakness" follow-up: how you overcome it. I usually balance my weaknesses with support from team members. When I am too nice I have someone I can rely on to be a guard dog. Or I'll chose a person I know I can rely on to be a voice of reason, advising me to take a step back and re-evaluate if my weakness is to never quit. I've been hearing this weakness-to-strength tip for twenty years, so it's how you can spin it at this point that will give you the edge.
This was awesome! as someone breaking into project management, this was helpful. I will be replying this daily until my dream job finds me. thank you for your help.
Hi Raven! Your dream job will come. The key is to move forward with confidence and be persistent. Many years ago when I was breaking in, I sent over 200 resumes before landing my first dream job as a PM. If I can do it, you can do it! Thanks for the feedback!
I've managed many projects for the NGO I worked without any experience in project management. I'm happy to learn so much from this video. I'll be in contact for mentorship in order to become a certified project manager. Thanks so much for the tutorial.
Great job, I am from Jamaica 🇯🇲 Great information I am planning to make project management part of my career and I am in the learning process of construction and project management. Your lecture was great and informative to me it's sure with confidence. Thank you.
You are in a great field! Construction has endless project management opportunities. Jamaica is also beautiful. I've been there one time. It's a great place!
Thanks a lot for your video. Some years ago I have a position of Project Management inside a iT Company. I wish in this year of 2023 to apply to some jobs in that area. From Portugal, THANKS A LOT!
Wow, one of the best video I see on interview preparation. Thanks for making it. Please create more such wonderful videos, especially your view on telling story, weekness and questions asked at the end of the interviews is very good. It helps not only in PM interview but its helping in any interviews. Nice one.
Hi Elvis, I just loved the way you clearly pointed out the things that actually matter in PM interview. Well, that adds me to your subscribers list :) I have experience as Website Developer, Android Application Developer and currently into Software Testing profile. Soon I'll be starting my Project Management program from a college. Need you suggestion. Do you think I'll be able to give an edge over other aspirants for the job if I apply into some IT company as PM after my studies?
Hi Arpit, thank you for the feedback. You would make an excellent software development project manager. Your background as a Developer is perfect. Also, your QA background is key. You get to experience significant portions of the development lifecycle from the QA side. You have the perfect background to manage development work. Great story! I would definitely encourage you to apply for I.T. Consulting PM jobs. With your background, I would even begin to apply as soon as you complete the fundamentals classes. You might land an entry level PM role while you are completing your studies. Good luck and stay in touch!
Great informative video! it would be challenging if multiple candidates watch your videos to be prepared for an interview for the same job they applied to . Then what interviewer would be thinking?
Thanks for this video. I wanted to know if you had any tips as I have an interview next week for a PM role though I my technical skills focus on Implementation and Onboarding for SaaS companies (post sale), as BUDGET is not part of the process. Any tips would be appreciated. Thank you
Hi! I hope your interview went well. Depending on the role and size of the company, many times working with budgets directly is not the primary role for the PM. Play up your delivery strengths!
Thank you for sharing your highlights. They are very helpfull and worth to take a note for yourself. There is only one thing that I still dont know how to follow. Some the youtube channels are not recommending to ask questions related with training, tools and support that company provide you. It has been told that, the candidate seem more into what he/she can get instead what he/she can offer. What do you think about it? or when do you think this should be asked ? (1st, 2nd or last interview?)
Hi Ozge! Thank you for the feedback and question. This question should be asked for sure. This does not show you are thinking about yourself. It shows that you understand that to be successful, you need the proper support. If you fast-forward this video to about the 12:20 mark, you will notice that one of the questions is "What is the Project Management Environment...". tools, training and leadership/PMO support is all part of that. If your interviewer does not like that question, then you may want to keep looking. Great organizations support their project managers with the proper environment and that is a totally appropriate question to ask on your first interview.
Man your channel is the best I have come across when it comes to project management. I am trying to break into the project management industry from a Tech background and your channel has answered most of my questions on how to go about it. Thanks so much for your content and I am amazed this is actually free. Thanks so much
Nice content. Can you help to know how a operations leadership role job fit it into project manager job with non technical background and someone who done PMP certification.
