Jack Dempsey said to never use bulky gloves on a heavy bag (ever). He valued hand and wrist conditioning as well as proper targeting/accuracy above knocking a bag around with puffy gloves.

@@Fit2Box oddly enough, in his book, he explains that your ring-knuckle should be where you try to land your power punches. When you wear thin mitts, you can start to understand the power lines he describes. Fascinating stuff taken from an era not far removed from bare knuckle power punching. He was trained by old timers and his power shocked his opponents.

I just ordered a pair of these of the Loma blue and yellow edition. Beside working on speed on the heavy bag, I can see these being useful for the double end bag, and reflex ball head band as well. For anyone that has used a tennis ball headband, they know how difficult it can be, as you have to hit it precisely with your middle knuckle for it to bounce back properly if you are not wearing gloves.

F2B: yet another spot on review, cheers mate. I've been using the RB 5 bag mitts for @ 4 years on heavy, double end and speed bags and love them for all the reasons in the review and the many informed expert comments below. i have one pair in my normal size large to use with conventional wraps to toughen knuckles and wrists and a pair in XL to use with the excellent Fortress Boxing quick wraps to rip the heavy bag at full power for 8 rounds with no issues at all. One point Russ Anber makes about the RB 5 is in addition to toughening up knuckles and wrists, they condition fast twitch muscles more than heavier gloves. Using them with the Fortress Wraps gives that extra protection and support when desired without compromising the fast twitch effect.

How big are you? My hand measurements suggest a S size, but there is no way that could be right. I'm 240 lbs and have relatively long fingers. What size would you suggest? I plan on using them without wraps.
Edit: Is the difference between S and XL only in width or is it in (vertical) length too?

💯 I would ALWAYS use handwraps under bag mitts
To me Not worth the risk of injuring the small bones in the hands or knuckles or even straining a wrist and really for what benefit?🤷🏻‍♂️
When you spar you’d wear handwraps
      Same when you fight
unless you have tape and gauze which is even more protective
Better to be safe than sorry

I actually feel less protection on the bag is better. But I'm someone who doesn't wrap their hands, never have in ten plus years of training. I've always believed in knuckle conditioning, making use of those microfractures to boost bone density and literally make your hands heavier. I used to even hit the bag bare knuckle (though with very limited power) when I first started training to force myself to punch properly. I feel its helped a lot throughout the years and I've never injured my hands in over ten years of training at least 3 days a week generally 2-4hr sessions.

I do mma so I normally use 16oz gloves no wraps for bag and sparring. I also have 14 and 4oz gloves. My 14oz are Yokkao Muay Thai Boxing Gloves. They are great for blocking kicks and support. 4oz are Combat Corner mma sparring gloves. They provide good protection with padding.

@@davidrlifts yeah they did but I switched over to mainly BJJ the last year. It’s more fun twisting peoples joints and watching the life drain from their eyes. I occasionally still do striking but not very often.
I still never wrapped hands and prefer bare fist on bag. I do grappling gi or nogi 3-4 days a week now at least. I find there is so much more depth to it than striking. With striking you can get pretty good in 3-6 months. With grappling it takes so much longer.

@@shawnmartin1306 Yeah man. I was thinking that I'd take classes on striking seldom, every now and then to get pointers and train striking on my own. And train some form of grappling 3 days a week.
I have thin wrists. Can you give me some pointers on how to condition the wrists? Also, do you train wrestling at all? I'm stuck on whether I should find a place that trains wrestling first or go straight to Jiu Jitsu. Whatever pointers you got on all this I'd appreciate heavy man.

@@davidrlifts so I do train different grappling arts. I train wrestling for takedowns, judo for takedowns, catch wrestling for better top pressure and bjj for all around submissions. The place I train has 4 BJJ black belts that teach, a bunch of guys who wrestled in college, 2 Judo black belts that teach and owner teaches catch wrestling. So lots of grappling going on there.
Honestly I have thick wrists. I love luxury watches and have a collection if Tudor, Grand Seiko, Hamilton, Breitling and others. My wrists are 8in. Some watches I actually have to buy extra links even when buying them new because my wrists are thick. Just training at a good mma gym your body will get used to it.
