What a great moment for the Tigers; but, I love Dick Williams reaction even more. Just a knowing nod that if Gossage had thrown 3 pitches to Gibson, he would have blown 2 past him. Complete trust in his pitcher and no regrets. This moment demonstrates why baseball is the greatest sport.

The 84 TIGERS were the first team since the 27 Yankees to go wire to wire in 1st place! They never left 1st place all year and started the season 35-5!!!
I was going through the Air Force police academy during this world series. Wd werent allowed to have any alcohol during training, but my senior instructor told our class that if everyone past the weeks test with 90% or better he would bring the dogs and the burgers and he would let us have a bbq. We met his challenge with the lowest score being a 93%. He was a man of his word. He showed up with the food and a tv for our day room and we watched this game. What we didn't expect was that he also brought coolers full of beer and wine coolers. He sat with us and watched the game. For a breif moment we weren't trainees and he wasn't our senior instructor. Just a bunch of guys enjiying food, beer and sports. He was from Cali and I was from Detroit so he talked some shit ti me but it was great that we felt like human beings for a little while. Some him year and half later after I was sent TDA back to Lackland for K9 school. I asked how his Padres were doing. He recognized me after that and at the end of the duty day we met up for some beers, I bought of course. I also told him thank you for what he did for our class. Best instructor I ever had in my 20 year service. Never got anything less a a 93 on any of my certs because of him.
Kirk Gibson killed the high five.... and I dont mean put it outta style he beat it to death, bludgeoned it, beat to a pulp until it was no longer seen again
Sparky Anderson is legend...He has the World Series experience and accomplishments...He knew exactly what was going to happen and Kirk Gibson picked up on it and delivered...After this Gibson had the experience and had another World Series HR against Dennis Eckersly...Great Baseball match up and Moment 👍

I was a Detroit News paper boy at the time and had the pleasure of delivering it with Gibby’s picture on the front page with arms raised jumping in the air. THE ROAR OF 84’
At 2:33 that's Gibby saying, "You owe me fifty bucks!" to Sparky and turning to Chet Lemon and saying, "I bet him fifty!" Gibby bet Sparky fifty bucks that he'd hit a home run and did.
Damn, that's awesome! If i had known that i definitely would have added it. For all the evil internet does, this sort of thing is the reason why i still love it. Cheers to you sir. Ps ralph furley is the man
Actually R, it was 10 bucks. Both Gibson and Sparky confirmed that 10 dollar amount on multiple occasions over the years. Check out the documentary- The Roar of 84- I believe that it was referenced there also.
There was so many more. I remember when he was old and came back to tigers he hit a game winner in extra inning when tigers were down by 2. He hit a 3 run homer and he was old and broke down. Never seen a guy run down to first so hard on every ground ball. He was still fast when he was old. He would run over the Catcher in the 90s when he was at end. He gave zero fucks
I don’t care what anyone says…THIS dinger was more impressive and more consequential than his Game 1 homer in LA four seasons later. Goosebumps. It may as well have been a walk-off game winner…because everybody in Michigan knew they were World Champs at that point of the ballgame and series.
Man, what a great moment. What a great crowd, too. You can tell even with this poor audio quality. The Tiger Stadium crowd in those three games was absolutely bonkers. Goose, you should've walked him.
One of the most towering shots ever hit in a World Series game. That thing barely missed the third deck facade at Tiger stadium. Easily close to a 500 ft bomb. It landed literally only five or six rows from the very top where people sit. Think about it Kirk Gibson probably has two of the biggest classic Legendary home runs in World Series history. Talk about a Charmed Life

Rare footage indeed. I remember where I was and who I was with when this game was played. I was 18 and had mastered the art of drinking and gambling, and had a friend with a sports bar in his basement. I don't drink or gamble now, and I don't condone it, but man it sure was a lot of fun. Thanks for reminding me of good times. Cheers mates.
Come back any time gibby home runs are forever
God...I remember watching this and just going from screaming to tears
The 84 TIGERS were the first team since the 27 Yankees to go wire to wire in 1st place!
They never left 1st place all year and started the season 35-5!!!
And included in that streak was 17-0 on the road.
I remember that. I actually had the USA Today which had their record at 35-5 for years.
The 1984 Tigers spoiled us all big time.
Goosebumps almost 40 years later
Kirk Gibson killed the high five.... and I dont mean put it outta style
he beat it to death, bludgeoned it, beat to a pulp until it was no longer seen again
Against the Goose! Saw that game..amazing moment for a baseball fan.
Two of the greats.
That was my very first tiger game. 9 yrs old, me and my mom. Gibby crushed that, she grabbed my arm, an we were outta there lol great great memory. Still remember the smells off that stadium
Kirk Gibson in the World Series! Clutch!
Kirk Gibson, Reggie Jackson
Mr, October
I love when people say baseball is boring. This shit is insane.
I can still see it I was up above first base as a sixteen-year-old with my grandfather.... We got tickets for $100 a piece from a parking lot attendant near Michigan and Trumbull where we parked regularly....the sports highlight of my life.....I can still see it and the hair stood up on my arms
Wow, that's a priceless memory. Very nice!
And with your Grandpa! What an awesome memory!
What its all about for sure man glad to share it with you
And there it goes! Thanks for the great call, Vin Sculley.
I was a Detroit News paper boy at the time and had the pleasure of delivering it with Gibby’s picture on the front page with arms raised jumping in the air. THE ROAR OF 84’
Awesome! I hope you kept a copy :)
@@therealbs2000 Wish I did, too young to realize it was nostalgic.
I was in the right field stands! It was awesome.
Awesome that this was mic’d up!
Dude was clutch, clutch, clutch!!!!
Sparky got that last laugh . . . don't walk him!
His next world series at bat and last ever was in 1988 against Dennis Eckersly...
....anybody care?.........
How did that one turn out?
@@therealbs2000 Everybody knows what happened. He hit a walk off home run.
@@HBKStyles are you stupid?
with no legs
I only knew about 88 homer dam this dude was clutch
There was so many more. I remember when he was old and came back to tigers he hit a game winner in extra inning when tigers were down by 2. He hit a 3 run homer and he was old and broke down. Never seen a guy run down to first so hard on every ground ball. He was still fast when he was old. He would run over the Catcher in the 90s when he was at end. He gave zero fucks
"I shoulda walked Gibson"- Goose Gossage when he was inducted into the Baseball Hall Of Fame
This is better than 88 for me. Damn, I miss Sparky.
Kirk Gibson, may we see that day he's inducted into the Hall of Fame.
At least into the Tigers Hall Of Fame
Thoughts and prayers to those players hands he high fived at home plate afterwards.
Sparky was trolling before trolling was trolling
I was 6yrs old and I remember this, our family loves the Tigers and remember my Dad going crazy hahaha
What a team! What a season!
Who's here after the Tigers win today?
One of the best moments in sports ever, second only to his 1988 HR
Greatest clutch hitter of all time!
The audio is amazing “he don’t wanna walk you. Use these”
I remember it like it was yesterday.
Best sports moment of my childhood.
Talk about a Charmed Life
I remember at the beginning of the season you could sit almost anywhere in Tiger Stadium. By mid season you couldn’t buy a ticket!!
That’s not true at all!……Tiger Stadium was jammed packed most day/nights from Easter on that year!…..
Williams just shaking his head is priceless.
One of the greatest sports moments .. ever.
Why is he not in the hall??? This guy was amazing
Not even close to amazing. A couple of amazing moments, though.
Such a great memory. Thanks James! ⚾️
