“Would you like to say any examples since this is a podcast?” Absolutely cracked me up. I feel like Sam had this coming ever since he gave the most underwhelming self-intro I’ve heard on the pod so far.
Threads never had that organic user only utopia that new sites have to hook their initial users before the big brands and ads ruin it. The auto import feature was a blessing and a curse. It gave them the user count, but it has caused the feed to be flooded by garbage spam meme/niche pages content. The content generators on twitter are actual people .. the content generators on Threads are spam/meme/niche pages. Unless that feed is fixed before users are churned, Threads is DOA.

Good point - the big strength (super fast growth bootstrapped from IG) is also a weakness. Let's see if the strength or weakness wins out

Always liked Sam Ovens but after this podcast I like him even more. Thanks for bringing on another unique human with a brilliant mind. Love how focused he is on the end user.

Sam Oven's strategy to running Skool reminds me of what Brian Chesky mentioned in a recent interview on how he is taking a focused approach to working on the core product of Airbnb. Love it.
I’m with Sam on using Instagram and Twitter on the computer. I basically exclusively use the PC web apps. It’s just logical for typing and opening threads in new tabs!

'Claims' of supposed user growth mean literally nothing when your app has to literally block users from closing an account once it's opened to keep those numbers inflated.

at the end of hte day, all that will matter is ACTIVE users anyways. That's why they report "monthly actives" as the key metric
Could be an interesting show - focus on the failures of guests and maybe variances between their failures and what was the key difference in their success. build a little app for question of the day to query listeners.

Agreed. Though I think we have enough menu buttons in Instagram, I think Threads as a stand-alone app is very bearish just b/c of the simple friction of opening a new app. If it was another button in Instagram I think people would be more likely to interact with it more.

A big thing with threads is also the postponed European launch tbh. It feels like we're late to the party and the hype has already passed before we get access.

Almost everyone won't take any of those records seriously considering signing up for Threads is as easy as a button in Instagram that's being promoted. Probably could have put anything on that button and it'd have been getting all these records or better.
I for one do not want Zuck to get WeChat status, where everything is through his apps... not with what I've seen from FB and its autocensorship.

I'd also recommend to lock Sam Ovens and Mr. Smith up for a week in a house and see what crazy business ideas come out of that.

Threads not being in Europe is sorta annoying. I want to try it but not hard enough to create a new google play account in the US, switching over, installing the app, switching back, etc.
Question for Shaan - who did you use for your milk road newsletter illustrations? They look cool and I need something similar.

Checked out threads for about two days, then realized it was a snooze fest & went back to Twitter. Only reason I signed up is because it was a low friction, one tap action. Probably never going to open that app again, but if they want to count me as a user... sure.
Bruh, Threads can’t be counted as a completely new app, they’re literally just turning on a feature for multi billion user base. Most of the “users” have never accessed the app-i’m getting “new Threads follower” notifications to my email linked to IG, and have never seen Threads App.
