Today we are back with another walleye fishing video and we are in the great walleye state of Minnesota! In this video we do some lead core trolling and talk all about one of the most effective ways to troll crank baits during the late summer period. Trolling for walleye with lead core is super simple and super effective. In this video we talk about where we are finding walleyes and what lures we are using to catch a bunch of these late summer walleyes on Mille Lacs Lake.
Thanks for watching!

Was in the area in mid June and had an incredibly large mayfly hatch. Some old dudes we talked with said in 35 years it's the biggest hatch they could recall with several large waves. I wonder if this produced some heavier fish from larva alone? Or combo that with the whole system benefiting from the hatch, everything healthier from forage availability? We lead core for muskie as well for the same reasons. Best videos ever. Always learning, always solving the problem. Like that your not full of yourself and relate the information well! Keep em coming!
Great video Tom. Nautical to say the least! Millie Lacs is a great lake. We have a lake place about 20 miles North just outside of Aitkin. Thanks for the lead core and color tips... Always discounted purple - who knew. You and Cody fish well together, your friendship and ease in the boat is great to see. Keep on Tom!
Tom, I was streaming this one on my tv this morning. I left the room and come back to, no lie my 2yo with his open face (I zip tied to a dowel) and is sitting in his chair watching you catch walleyes! 😂 love it!
Great video Tom! Lead is great! Pmytuming waiting on you guys!
Just a bit of a walleye chop out there.
Pullin lead on the Pond is always better with waves, Always!
Nice job you two.
As always... great video/information!
Finally a real fishing partner... haha
Also, if you are like me and you dont like dealing with heavy line and/or braid, just split shot a crank or jerkbait. You wont have as much control as lead core but it works very well. Great video tom.
Have no idea about the lead core..... I am going to have to look into this some more
2 questions, do you ever run lead core with planer boards? I've read that you shouldn't clip the boards on lead core. Also how much lead core do you put on the reel and do you use mono backing?
Interesting method. Have heard about it but never seen it.
Leadcore is great but a lot of guys won’t mess with it. A jet diver video would be a good idea. I bet there’s a lot of non-great lakes guys who aren’t familiar with running jet divers, 2oz snap weights, tadpoles etc.
or slide divers.
Another great video! I watch every one and have learned a ton from you! Where has Mitchell been lately?
Nobody knows. Maybe he got a dreaded job or even worse he’s whooped on a girl who won’t let him fish.
Great video , great information, did you like fishing out of a Ranger ? Which do you like better yours or the ranger
I love your videos
That looks fun, I could make that work here. How many colors?
Question, when are you using a weight system like lead core to push a crank past its curve do you have to still consider its stock depth Beyond whatever the line will put you down by itself? So for example if you're running enough lead core back to put you down 20 ft would it actually be 35 once you consider what the bait itself will actually div
I only consider the length of the leader for the baits dive curve. If I have 20 foot of leader I figure the baits effect on that 20 feet and use the 6 to 8 foot per color, depending on speed, to calculate the rest.
Leadcore is underrated. All I use on Lake Pepin during the summer!
I was just there smoking saugs. Fun spot.
What do you troll on Pepin. Mostly shad style baits?
What kind of speed are you running?
Why leadcore over snap weights? I ve tried both and felt snap weights are more consistent at depths and get down faster and less line out to clean baits ect. your thoughts?
Leadcore smooths out the pulse of the bait.
Yeah, I put a little metal clamp weight about 2-5 ft above the crank or jerkbait I use. It essentially has the same effect as lead core its just you have a little more control over the depth of the lure with that weighted lead core line. I use the split shot-clamp weight approach simply because I dont like dealing with heavier lines like lead core, braid ect.. Both work well for trolling deep with artificial lures, I just prefer the clamp weight to get the crank on the bottom.
BYORH (Bring Your Own Rod Holders) for Tom!
6:24 Tom starts looking like Mitchell. ( insert phone joke)
Like from a Ranger owner!
Will the glass boats ever come out with a built in track system like lund and Alumacraft?
How would you fish for walleye on Lake Roosevelt in Washington? Typically we jig in 180 - 200 ft and drift, but in August it seems to dust shut off. I have tried trolling various depths with downriggers and spoons and cranks, drifting with worms. We cannot use live bait in Washington. I've been skunked lately.
You will kill every walleye you reel in in over 35 feet of water as they cannot adjust the amount of air in their bladder. Lake trout and whitefish are they only fish that can adjust the amount of air in their bladder. It is called barotrauma .
IDG&F tagged a bunch of walleyes in Pend Orille trying to get people too keep/eat them and turned in heads it to the Idaho Game and fish biologists. You could catch $1000 walleye, and lakers are worth $15 each.
idfg.idaho.gov/region/panhandle
Would have you attempted trolling in those conditions without a partner?
How is those okuma lc reels? I have the penn squals lc and the lc on them is terrible. I love the reel but the lc on them gives me troubles.
I sure like mine, the lc works great.
Curious if he is spooling up with just 10 colors of lead with a backer?
How many colors do you put out per deoth
Regular 18 lb lead core runs about 5 feet down per color(30 feet of line)
Ok, so here in north Georgia we know very little about what you’re talking about…first, why wouldn’t you eat a 26 inch walleye for example? Secondly, our walleye are mostly in 40+ feet of water in the summer with water temps in the 86 degree range, would lead core be sufficient to get my Repala Tail Dancer down to depth? And would it be effective still? So far, in summer we fish for Walleye at night when they come up from depth. The DNR has been stocking 5 pounders for years in select reservoirs, best eating fish we have, but we need more basic info… right now most of us are struggling… thanks Tom! We watch every video you put out. Keep up the great content👍
You will kill every walleye you bring up from 40 feet of water due to baro trauma. In Wisconsin and Minnesota, most people release larger fish as they are the good spawners and contain more toxins. All large old fish accumulate toxins as they age. Smaller fish taste better and are better for you. There is a mercury advisory on every lake in Wisconsin for eating large fish . Mercury is a by product of burning coal.
Thank you Jim, that clears up a great deal.
Commenting on Boley’s video and questioning him on why he is doing something and telling him he should be doing it another way……Is like arguing with Gawd and telling him he is wrong.
Great comment!!!
LOL, correct.
speed??
Looks like a good day for hog eyes
The Simms fishing link doesn't work.
What length rod do you use? How long of leader?
40ft leader 12 lb flouro.
2B Fishing 8'6" trolling rod linked in description.
In south dakota we run 2 rods each, 8 footers or better off the sides and 5 footers off the back
@@TomBoley is there a reason why such a long leader? and I'm assuming you subtract the leader length from total feet for depth control, i.e. 100 feet out minus leader is actually 60 feet of lead core which would get you down @ 16' then add the lure depth.
@@mattbrown7483 you need longer leaders after lead because it won’t act right if you only use 10 ft or so as you would other fishing lines
@@Josh-sd1hgthanks, makes sense now, the lead core has no stretch like mono.
So weird to see somebody handing Tom a rod
its 5 ft a color, so 10 color is 50, 5 color would be 25 down
Always wearing jackets and long sleeves,
This can't be this year
They are in northern Minnesota and it was 25 mph winds.
Just admit it: you have motor problems again
