Module17 Standalone M17 Radio Modem For Ham Radio

- Here we take a look at the Module17 M17 Radio Modem Board. This allows any 9600 Baud capable radio to transmit and receive M17. With it's recent partial release for public sale, it's time to demonstrate what this can do, currently. With firmware features progressing constantly, is this the next experimenters digital mode?

On the 9600 capability, it isn't just the pre-emphasis, it is also the audio bandwidth available. Filtered or not. Typically for FM audio it will cut off above 3.5kHz to avoid hiss.
Yep that’s true. The only reason I mentioned it in the video is because when we talk about “9600 baud”, we think of a transmission speed, which has nothing to do with M17. I could of gone “all in” on explaining FM filtering etc etc etc, but that wasn’t what the video was about. Thanks for commenting though, I’ll pin your comment.
Thanks for the video, it's great to see more innovation come to the hobby, even if it's not everyone's cup of tea so to speak. I'll definitely try out M17 in the future!
Glad to see one of my old Module17 batch on video.
It's a great video than you for the work.

Two of rhe better UK amateur channels doing a collab!
Thanks :-) More to come!
Thanks for demo 👍. Had a look on M0JSX channel but cannot see his recording. Assume not posted yet. Would be interesting to compare M17 copy to marginal FM or SSB copy.
thank you
You're welcome
I have the same board and a Motorola GM380 with extra personality to mute the internal speaker in M17 mode, works good
Audio quality could be better (and maybe it will be in the future), but It's great to see an open standard mature
Improvements on the decoder are being made by the OpenRTX team, which should help reduce the amount of 'chirping' you hear in the decoded audio. Also, the Codec 2 audio codec (subjectively) sounds much better on a headset, or a speaker that has bass / treble adjustments. ^KC1AWV
@@M17Project very nice
It all depends on the hardware that you use. Compare to the quality that Droidstar offers.
What does it sound like listening to the data stream with a normal NBFM receiver ?
Hi , do you have a link for the Plastic Housing looks so good :)
It's on github repo, it's 3D printed, the STL files are here: github.com/M17-Project/Module_17/tree/main/case/revision_01e
Hi , I am stuck loading the firmware to the Aliexpress board any tips i have the user guide but confused , thanks Andreas
Hi mate, instructions for firmware loading can be found here: github.com/M17-Project/Module_17
Hi , thanks for the link and great Video , i did use the GitHub instructions but found it too difficult to follow in the end DB9MAT made me a batch file then worked great :)

I keep checking back every week and these Module 17 devices are still sold out. Are they ever going to make more?
To be clear..... this board will turn any 9600 baud FM radio into a C4FM, D-Star, DMR Etc radio...... correct?
No, only M17. It would be illegal to make a board like this for other digital modes
@@TechMindsOfficial Mind telling why it would be illegal?
@@erlendseproprietary voice codec used. You'd need a way to legally use it by the board, and that most likely wouldn't be convenient.
@@TechMindsOfficialit could be done legally
@@davidkierzkowski yea with an AMBE chip that costs $$$.
hi there im still waiting for the q900 updates as i bought the latest version as per your link and having probs with the cat control cheers vk2ert rob
Hi again there is also issue with dmr not decoding through the headset Jack and high temp running dmr changed antenna 3 times still running hot dmr goes quiet sometimes and a kchunk starts it decoding again ? Vk2ert Rob
I bought the PMR-171, which is the Q900 V4 inside a military radio with an added tuning knob. It's so awesome.
Could it have encryption incorporated? Yes i know its not used by us HAMs, but my friends fighting for there freedom in Ukraine must have it.
There are many folks, besides hams that would use this Module 17 Adapter and can use it with encryption legally.
Nice intro video to this product, however any idea why it’s been removed / not available from the site?
It will be back soon. There were only 8 pcs available in the last batch.
"Baud rate" is not correct. It's just "Baud" or "Symbol rate". I'm really existed to see open source solutions for ham radio digital communications. We need to get IMBE/AMBE and other proprietary modes off the ham bands.
Damn true we have to! Open source or GTFO. That's what I say!
They only had 7 Modules on AliExpress...Lame. I have been waiting for the component parts to come in so I can print the PCB and build just 5 of these (min. buy).
Would you be selling a few after you build them ?
@@symanthiaalford5384 if i can ever get some built lol.
Analog and DRM are enough for me after starting with DSTAR in 2010, and later C4FM, which lost my and many others interests 😊
Am I missing something here? It's got a bandwidth of ~9kHz, and sounds terrible compared to narrow band FM(~3.5kHz), does this have some advantage over plain old NFM?
Yes, you are completely missing the fact that the RF channel not only carries compressed voice and link signalling, but also some overhead for error correction coding.
Maybe digital modes would be better marketed as voice changers for kids? DSTAR and C4FM -> Stephen Hawking voice. M17 -> Comb and paper underwater.
Sorry to be negative. I appreciate the effort to oust proprietary modes, which don't belong in the hobby. But FM is better than them, and I don't understand the appeal of anything that isn't an improvement on it.
I think I’m going to have to make a dedicated video on explaining what the idea behind M17 is, and what it isn’t (currently).
That was funny. I appreciate it. But a lot of us are excited about M17 for a lot of reasons.
I hope it keeps developing. This sounds really not great.
Everyone has their own ideas and views and that is what Ham Radio is all about, but personally I can't see any point to using digital modes in this way. The reduction in audio clarity compared to just FM is a big downfall with limited if any increase in transmission distance. It does provide a form of secure comms in a basic way but that is negligible. Modes like ft8 etc via ssb make more sense to me. This just reminds me of the bad VOIP phone calls we all get from phone scammers LOL
Man that sounds terrible even crappy DMR is better GIMMY HIFI
It literally sounds worse than the Commodore 64's undocumented digital sound hack of turning the click on the SID chip on and off. ua-cam.com/video/ytYQqxjJB2k/v-deo.html
