Justice Nariman never disappoints with all of his worldly knowledge. I am waiting more for his retirement than to his unquestionable ongoing reign at the bench, because post retirement we all will get more to hear from this great man. 😊🙏

An excellent presentation Justice Nariman ! You seem to have thoroughly gone through various major religions on this subject. It was difficult to stop or pause for a moment. Really engrossing!
Towards the end, when you came to anomalies in the theory of transmigration , I would like to add a few thoughts to that. In the examples you quoted, in Sanatana Dharma, there is absolute clarity on how two dogs are placed in different environments. It is Karma and nothing else. Now, you might argue why should the dog in a congenial environment become a dog in the first place, in case he had done good karmas in his previous birth. Well, here I would like you have a look at the story of Bharata again (after whom this country was named), who you quoted in the earlier part of your presentation. He became a deer simply because at the time of his death he was too much attached to a deer he had rescued, and brought up, despite the fact that he was fit for.Moksha. Please refer to Srimad Bhagwatam for this.
About the cycle of 84 lakh births, it is clearly explained wherefrom does a jivatman start from. Again, it would depend upon the severity of his bad Karmas. A cow's birth is supposed to be the most advanced birth after the humans, and that is why cow is held as sacred.
Once again, thank you very much for this wonderful presentation !

An absolutely lovely speech. The Honourable Mr.Justice Rohinton Fali Nariman beautifully expounded the concepts of reincarnation in the various religions.
Incidentally, we always associate Karma with the bad stuff we do. Our good deeds are karma too.
Yes, Buddhism talks a lot about suffering. But the most important takeaway is that it also shows us a "way out of this suffering". One need not evolve. One need not progress. One need not take it step-by-step. Rather, one can transcend. Like the cow that jumped over the moon!
And this transcendence is available to all: sinners as much as saints, thieves as much as benevolent people.
Without any desires for worldly experience, without any attachments, one breaks the cycle of birth and death. So say the great masters.
Would have loved to hear the great speaker talk about the 'mind' and the non-stop suffering one experiences through it. I am given to understand that Heaven and Hell are usually referred to as the state of one's being: relating to presence/absence of mind.
Relating to events through a limited mind. Or by being the witness of the mind.

I was given this URL by a friend who believes that we are at a stage where we must be following the vanaprastha regime in our lives.
Of course, the speaker spoke well.
Some info I could relate to my own knowledge of some of these narratives, some I could accept as a logical extension of those narratives and there were quite a bit that was new too. I do not know how Nariman did not consider the Advaitha philosophy which is one of the important philosophies dominating Indian thoughts these days.
Ultimately, at the end of the day I was left with the following thoughts: one, men often find it easier to comprehend the vastness of space than the emptiness of the desert surrounding them. And, two, especially in the context of this judge who was part of the bench that decided the Sabarimala case in a blatantly unconstitutional manner, wish he had weighed the burden of Art 25(2)(b) vis a vis Art 26 while deciding the matter purely as a matter of gender equality.
There cannot be any doubt that it was the exclusiveness of Art 25(2)(b), as it applies only to Hindus and Hindu institutions, that needed to be abrogated or enlarged, depends on which way one looks at it. The rights provided in Art 26 is to all religious denominations and are general in nature.

It could be bad karma from a previous birth that one is a leper or a deformed hunchback (as noted by the speaker). But Eternal Joy and Freedom from Suffering are available to him too. Now. The great sage Ashtavakra, is an example.

Reincarnation is not a standalone doctrine and the 'soul' is conceptualised different in different theologies.
Christianity is based on superficial and half baked jewish mythology.
Even the devout Jews, know jesus Jew heaven is just a fantasy.
Half baked attempts to superimpose the shallow teachings of Christian sin ,'soul' ,Heaven with Karma,Dharma Moksha, and atman of Hinduism.
