I got my husband, a mechanic, the tool pen for his birthday and he LOVES it and actually uses all the features, especially the stylus. The yellow paint is already staring to chip off, but it gets used hard in a truck shop.
I bet a little yellow fingernail enamel would touch it up just fine. I’m more confused why people would want yellow fingernails than by why they want that pen. That’s the preppers edc fantasy pen.
I have the Tool Pen in ballpoint in silver color, and I have to say that I like it. I have no use for most of the features. If it didn't have them, I would buy and use the pen just the same. It has a nice hefty feel, and the ballpoint is reliable.
I've had this in my eye for months, but I don't see a compatible converter. I want it for the same reason I keep one of my late father's slide rules on my desk, to remind me of my origins as an engineer.
I got the Monteverde tool pen in brass the other day as a congratulations gift to myself for landing a new job in Telecom construction. I love the thing! The Conklin Abalone has also been on my wish list for a while.

I LOVE my tool pen! I just bought 2 more to give as gifts. The rainbow coloring is delightful, you never know when you’ll need a level, and the nib was perfect out of the box, which is more than I can say for some of my more expensive pens. The Benu nibs are a delight and how can you not love a glow-in-the-dark pen?! That gold monster is BANANAS! Just…wow!
I have the Jinhao Dragon pen & absolutely love it. Yes, it is outrageous & big but it is a conversation piece when people not familiar with fountain pens see it.
Drew, I truly enjoyed the video. You asked the question, why does the Monteverde Tool Fountain pen exist and by extension, why do people purchase it. I figured I would share why I purchased the Monteverde Tool Fountain Pen. 1. I am an engineer, and the scales on the sides of the pen remind me of the scales I used in my drafting and engineering courses in college. 2. I am a woodworker, and the yellow color reminds me of the old yellow folding rulers used by carpenters and woodworks. 3. I have fat finger syndrome and continually hit the wrong letters when texting or emailing on the phone. The touch pad end works well. 4. I am a man, and what man doesn’t need a flat and phillips screwdriver in a pen. 5. The pen’s build in aid, helps me to keep my writing on the level (yes, pun intended). This is one of my favorites.
Jinhao 999, although over the top and yes a bit gaudy and can be used for daily weight lifting it is the most reliable pen I own. I have kept only Dragon Blood ink in it (because what else would you put in it) since I got it pre-pandemic. I have never had a start issue with it and ink has never dried up in. I have been a bad dragon owner and have never even cleaned it yet I still have never had an issue with Clarence. Yes, I named it. It is my number one pen over more expensive ones.
My current favorite pen that I actually own is a Benu. I’m not much of a girly-girl but when I saw the Hexagon line and the D color option I swooned. I call it my mermaid pen, haha! I love how outrageous their pens sre in general. The rest of my pens are pretty “normal”. I also find it funny that the Conklin abalone pen was on this list because I’ve been hinting and nudging my husband to get me the rose gold trim version for my birthday. IDK, I feel like you have to have at least one or two “stand out” pens in your collection. Even if they stand our for being ridiculous.
The Visconti Iridium Rainbow is my grail pen, but I definitely have to add the Pineider to my wishlist now. And my dad will LOVE the tool pen. Curse you, Drew!
I *have* the Monteverdi, for my tool/survival kit. Kikkerland makes a variation, too, and they're getting quite common: I even see them at places like FedExOffice.

Somehow I missed this video--what fun!! I remember when I first saw the Zepp in the GPC Instagram feed. I gasped aloud because it is so outrageous, and they really nailed the zeppelin aesthetic. Great list!

That big golden dragon is on my wishlist; in the meantime I have placated myself with the ultra-conservative glossy black Jinhao 1200, where only the clip is encrusted with all the Wondrous Dragon-ness and red jewel eyes.
I have two of the pens. The tool pen is very handy if you need to tighten screws on your glasses or adjust clock radios at hotels where they put a cover over the adjustments. I also have an Abalone pen. I am old enough to remember taking Abalone off of rocks just below the tide line. I still have my father's Abalone tool..
The grand scepter you can’t even write with because the step down section is too steep. I have to keep my fingers on the barrel to write with this pen. Back in the day I bought the Jinhao dragon but there’s no comfortable way to hold it so I quit using it. The vodka on the rocks is obnoxious but in a really pretty way. Great list!
I like the dragon pen. I own the pewter-colored (more subdued) pen. I have relatively small hands but I like the size and weight of this pen when posted. It's my favorite pen to use. I also compare other pens with the dragon pen as my baseline for what I like in weight. Although I have other pens that are not metal, I generally prefer my pens to have a metal body for the added weight.
I know they’re super flashy but I so want to splurge on a Benu one day. Vodka On The Rocks isn’t my first choice since I like the multicolored bodies more but they remind me of the inside of a geode and I love them.
(im kidding) The pelikan M 805 Ocean Swirl.... thats an outragousssssssssly Gorgeous pen... im just so sad its not available..... I wanted to get the m205 (baby ocean swirl) but its just not the same!!!! I literaly shed a tear watchin some one with a new video featuring the pen.... Ive never been this sad over a pen...... XD

I personally prefer (and own, BTW) the Visconti Pininfarina Iridium. It was LE I’m fairly sure, so it might not quality for this list, but it was I believe the first of the Visconti Iridium line, it has that awesome funky-retro 50s car feel somehow, and of course a twisting hidden/capped nib mechanism. Craziness abounds. And the Dude abides.
Great video, well done. Love the top four, my favourite is the Waterman, but I understand your choice for number one. It's for sure one of the top fountainpens on the market at this moment.

Its a cool idea but wouldn't it be better as a clutch pencil or a marker? Putting a fountain pen on something so toolboxy seems a little odd to me.

The Conklin Abalone is beautiful, but it doesn’t write consistently. I would not advise anyone to purchase one.
Every once in a while, a pen company chooses chaos and this sweet man suffers.

I'd have gone with the Visvonti I think, but I would have used a writing test to make the decision.
The Pineider's writing experience is a bit more "outrageous" since the nib is more flexible. If that's what we're going for! - Drew

I got the tool pen because I love writing my notes with a fountain pen, but I sell construction supplies, so it's so perfect for me!

I was lucky to see it when it was still in stock and jumped on it. It is my favorite and I have it inked with Robert Oster Crystal Marine.
