Thanks Herrick. I have a love for old hammers as well. I have two Robert Maydole hammers from the late 1800's I love, and a number of odd tack hammers. I would have said bark spud also, which irks me a bit, because I've seen a farrier's buttress before. Love the screw length finder, looks way more fun than just using a tape measure or ruler.

That first hammer looked familiar. I believe it is in a book entitled "Machine Shop Projects" and was originally published by Southbend Lathe Works. That set me on a search for the book in the garage and then I realized I still have snow tires on the van because a stack of tires is blocking my lathe tool chest.

Just an idea for your next tools: Old motor oil in a peanut butter jar works as a stable self-leveling mirror for which to translate string lines up or down. Just put the jar under the line somewhere, and move your eye until the real line matches up with the mirrored line. Put your marker into the ground where it would follow the line.

@@herrickkimball I’m 65 I made it when I was a freshman ,in high school at the time my school offered an industrial arts program for high school we learned building construction ,electrical house wiring basics ,drafting,small engine repair ,welding they had a small forge we used to make our chisels I took it all 4 years of high school,we touched a little on everything.
