Today we look at the action of John Basilone of 1st Battalion, 7th Marines who was awarded the Medal of Honor for his role in the Battle for Henderson Field in October 1942.
Brian Domitrovich is an amateur historian who has been studying the Battle of Guadalcanal for over 10 years. In this time, he has interviewed veterans who were there and lived through this iconic battle. He has also travelled Guadalcanal on many occasions including the surrounding islands of Tulagi, Gavutu and Tanambogo. He has also spent time with local Solomon Islanders and their families that lived through the battle.

Paul's guest is Brian Domitrovich who has studied the Battle of Guadalcanal for over 10 years; he's actually been to Guadalcanal many times; and he's interviewed some of the veterans of this legendary battle. Brian's deep dive into the history of this battle makes it worthwhile to watch this particular show and then when you add Paul's great interviewing skills and passion for ww2, you get a very interesting (and must see) show. Well done, Brian and Paul.

Exceptional presentation by Brian Domitrovich!! With the amazing bonus that during its live airing, the host Paul Woodadge, connected a viewer who is seeking more information about his uncle who was KIA on, and is buried on, Guadalcanal Oct. 25, 1942, with Brian who immediately offered his assistance in the man's quest to learn more about, and to honor, his uncle. Wow! An overwhelming moment in this show. Semper Fi!

Outstanding show. If your interested in USMC History, you need to watch this show or just want to be amazed by heroic actions then watch this show. The present day pictures of the battlefield will make you want to put on bug spray. Nasty place. Brian Domitrovich and Paul do an excellent job of bringing these men's stories to life.

An excellent show. Brian does an outstanding job of sharing the truth behind the myth of John Basilone and the actions of October 24-26, 1942. The video showing the actual Marine locations on Guadalcanal really help to show how the jungle was as bad as the Japanese.

Thanks raiders and marines for keeping him alive during that time. He was in his 40s at the time and served pre war many years. The old man made it home. o7

Another good program. I always learn a lot from your program.
I wanted to touch on something you said, that 1942 was the year that the war could have gone either war. Of course, the outcome of the War was still undecided. I would say, however, that 1941 was the real year that the war could have gone either way. There were quite a number of developments in 1941 that meant that the Axis had lost by far their best chance of winning the War. But these three stand out:
    1) President Roosevelt pushed Lend Lease through Congress. This meant essentially that Britain had a blank check to fight the war with. Lend Lease was meant for Britain, but the decision was made early in to extend it to the Soviet Union. Lend Lease also was an important step in firing up the American Arsenal of Democracy.
    2) Pearl Harbor brought America into the War and despite the horrific images, did relatively little real damage besides hammering largely obsolete ships. . Much more importantly, the Japanese succeeded in instantly unifying a deeply divided country that still largely wanted to say out of the War.
    3. On virtually the same day as Pearl Harbor, the Red Army launched its Winter Offensive. and did massive damage to the Ostheer. This meant that Barbarossa had failed in its primary goal of destroying the Red Army. The Germans would never again amass the same raw combat power amassed for Barbarossa. At the same time the Soviets would never again be so weak.
As regards Guadalcanal, it is often said that the U.S. Army learned how to fight the Germans in North Africa. The same is true of the Americans and the Japanese. The difference is that after Alaamein and the Torch landings, the Germans could not have won in North Africa. The situation was very different on Guadalcanal. The Japanese could have won. And did not, the bravery of the Marines and soldiers notwithstanding, because the Japanese refused to go all in. The U.S. Navy threw all it had into the campaign, meaning that cruisers and destroyers attacked battleships. The Japanese had major naval assets such as 'Yamato' that they did not commit.
Few Americans knew what to expect when they landed in Guadalcanal. That was never the same. The Americans first encountered the Japanese in the Philippines, but they were few survivors. Guadalcanal was different. The lessons learned on Guadalcanal greatly increased the combat effectiveness of the U.S. military and not just the Marines--all the services. You are absolutely correct about Matine'non-coms. Often not understood is that most of the First Marine Division were composed of very young and minimally trained youth. Basilone had military training. Very few of the young Marines had more than boot camp under their belts. Most of their training came in the month after they landed. with only Aligator Creek as a major engagement.

Thank you for a very good video. To clarify about John Basilone's friends, his two closest friends were his fellow sergeants, J P Morgan and Richard Greer, Greer only died a few years ago, he appears in the extras on the Pacific box set. He refused to sign a release to appear as a character in The Pacific, so Bruce McKenna created Manny. I agree, with your comments on 'I am staying with my Boys'. The best written account of John Basilone is that by Hugh Ambrose in the book to accompany The Pacific. I look forward to watching more of your videos.

Paul, you touch upon a very important topic, the culture of command. And the ability of junior officers and enlisted men to rise to the occasion in combat situations to adjust tactics to the situations. You are absolutely right in the case of the Japanese. They just continued to use the same failed tactics. But I am not at all sure that the Germans were in the same category. My thought is that the Germans were trained to step up. It strikes me that this would be an excellent topic for one of your videos. I will point out that most World War II observers rate the Germans man for man and unit for unit, as the most effective soldiers of the War,. Stephen Ambrose notwithstanding. The truth is that democracies with all their virtues are not the best breeding grounds for soldiers. While the freedom they generate does lead to economic success, creating industrial economies that have the potential for manufacturing the implements of war in massive quantities.

I was in the Navy in 1967 and part of our training for Vietnam was two weeks at Camp Pendleton for weapons training...point being, I fired about a 1/4 of a belt of ammo through a M1917A1 mounted on a tripod and was astonished at how much it kicked back through my wrist whilst holding on to the trigger grip. I can't imagine firing 134 belts of ammo....what kind of shape would your wrist be in?

I was there in 2003 with John Innes when he discovered the Basilone position. The position is quite low from a prospective of the heights of the ridge.
It was marked with GPS which was quite new at that time.
When "The Pacific" was in production, HBO setup a site for relatives of Marines to make contributions from their service members. My Dad told me he remembered getting resupplied and the first thing he had to eat....'peaches ". I submitted that and think that's where it came from.

According to Richard Greer, who was in the same company as Basilone on Guadalcanal, JP Morgan was a real person. He died in 1980. There isn’t much known about him other than he was really close with Basilone, and that his wife left him and took his poker winnings. As for Manny Rodriguez, he was fictional. Originally, they were gonna include Richard Greer in the series. However, because of legal stuff Richard Greer didn’t want to sign or deal with, they created the character of Manny Rodriguez.
