My favorite product for wool is Eucalan liquid soap. You can find it at knitting shops. Soak your woolens and you don't need to rinse. The herbs in it help to repel moths. I roll up in a towel as well but transfer to a second dry towel so that things dry faster. Eucalan is more expensive than dish liquid but you don't need to use much and compared to dry cleaning is a real bargain.
I have to tell you I just found a vintage st.John black knit with gold buttons in perfect condition for $6 at GW! Thought of you and will wear it in your honor! Love your videos so much!
Great vid! I recently discovered a gentle laundry soap called “Soak,” which requires NO rinse. It’s biodegradable, plant-derived and phosphate- and dye-free. Fantastic product from Canada (natch), which although a bit pricey, provides 75 washes from a 12-fl oz bottle. (No, I don’t rep or work for them 😀). Love that you soak the item for 15 mins then simply squeeze out excess. No rinse necessary!
Strangely, I just washed a new (to me) vintage jacket today. It's cotton corduroy with two other kinds of fiber in the lining. The tag said 'dry clean only.' I put it in a garment bag and washed it in my machine with cold water and no spin. I hung it to dry on the porch, and it came out fine. I wash most of my cashmere sweaters in the machine, in a mesh bag, on cold and the delicate cycle, using Woolite, then roll them in a towel and lay them flat to dry. I actually hand washed a cashmere sweater with a lot of beading (in cold with a bit of Woolite), and it came out fine. I don't totally trust the dry cleaner (who ruined some drapes). Other than wool flannel, I can't think of anything I'd send to the dry cleaners.
Yes! I never dry clean stuff and I actually think some people pass on items at the thrift store that say "dry clean only" bc they don't realize they can wash in cold + hang dry most items. I've also recently discovered soaking heavily stained or smelly items in Oxi Clean overnight can make a big difference (use the version for whites or colors accordingly) then regularly washing the item. Thanks for sharing this!
I use a good old « 100% savon de Marseilles » and it remove so many of the bad stain! Baking soda & dish soap is a good option too but I’ll not use it on darker clothes though. Spraying Vodka over some garments is helpful for bad odors as well on top of leaving them outside
Great tips! I just spent $63 taking a few pieces to the dry cleaner and I about died.... I know I can hand wash at hone cashmere and others from growing up living with my Great Aunt who grew up in the Great Depression and laundered EVERYTHING at hone, but I still dont trust my home treatments and what I worry about is the wrinkling aftermath... I think I could do sweaters, but the silks and rayons make me nervous....This was oddly satisfying to watch haha!
Love this so much, those are some smart tips. I always have problems getting the wool pieces dry. Such a simple, but smart solution. Thank you! For the stains I have a bar made of natural ingredients and completely plant based, that gets almost every stain out. Even yellow stains in older vintage pieces or blood it will remove. That's how we can keep on loving our pre-loved items for many years more🥰
Honestly this nice white dress must be of excellent quality and would survive a wash in the machine. I'm not as confident with nowadays' clothes! 🤣 My Danish grandmother would wash everything and herself with soft soap. Cheers from France and thank you for your interesting videos.
Thanks Annette! Since you’re also a sequins girlie, do you have any tips for washing those? I sourced some FIRE 80’s pieces about two years ago that haven’t come out yet bc I’m terrified of ruining it.
I handwashed a wool/ cashmere blazer.. it shrunk😞.. and the lining was all mishapen .. total bummerama.. it was so soft and beautiful orange and brown.. ive ruined so many things unintentionally... Now.. i pretty much just hang things out un the sun for days .. blazers.. or jackets..
I don’t pass on dry clean but always pass on stinky items. Cat hoarder smells and wet rag smells are always a pass for me. The vodka tip hasn’t worked for me. The item was linen.

Thank you Annette for all your ideas. I've been using baby shampoo for all my hand washing for years now.

My grandmother taught me to hand wash sweaters and then roll in towels as well!
Great tips - I use the sun-tip also!

Laundry Love by Patric Richardson is a great resource on how to wash vintage clothing.

Oh can you share your recipe for the stain remover bar? Would love to try another method!
@@AVintageSplendor it's a store bought product from this store we have in The Netherlands, called Dille&Kamille
Wonderful content!! I'm having trouble getting a few stains out of vtg tee shirts. Will try baking soda and dish soap!! Thank you!!❤
Good luck! Some people add hydrogen peroxide too but I never have it on hand 😅

I needed this!!
Great vid, thanks ❤
How about cleaning a suede vest with a silk back? 😊
Great 👍 Tips!
Glad it was helpful!
I believe using the kitchen sink is good rather than kneeling by bathtub.....

I’ve heard spraying items down with vodka refreshes them, has anyone done this? I am abit nervous to try it
❤❤❤
What leather cleaner do you use?
I love this set: bit.ly/3USDr3b

Do you have a microphone? Sometimes it is hard to hear.
Nice video! But to much hassle. That's why i stopped wearing vintage
Yeah.. I still thrift but when you have to hand wash everything... 🫤... It gets old..
