Born and raised in Dixie ... Pensacola, FL, to a family of fishermen, carnies, fast talkin' good ol' boys and con men. This song brings me to tears every time I listen to it. Not sure why. But let me tell you something, coming to you from a great grandma's perspective .... Say 'so long' for now .... trust me when I tell you, that you will return to Dixie in your heart, and soul and mind, over and over again, and in your old age you will come home to die, even if you are many, many miles away. The South/Dixie can never truly be left behind. And when you are my age, you will realize why.

I was just hearing it like, if I stay here I won't get my dream out there, etc. Gotta leave and go to the big city, etc. to do what I want to do. Maybe there's a story behind it they've shared on patreon or somewhere that I've missed. I'll have to listen to it a million more times anyway, so I might hear something I didn't before. I LOVE this song and I KNEW there was going to be those who were upset with it. They are not saying they hate Dixie. If fact they talk about the good things they learned from Dixie. They are not ashamed or anything at all, but in our society there are things from the souths past that are coming to the forefront in current society that should honestly be left behind. I mean we SHOULD learn from our mistakes. That's what they are leaving behind. Atleast that's how I interpreted it. If I'm wrong so be it but they are NOT saying they hate the south.

What things from the South's past are coming to the forefront in current society? All I see every day are people of all backgrounds and ethnicities working and playing together, like anywhere USA. That's the way it should be. Dixie is not the only area of the country with a sordid history. Dixie does seem to be the only area of the country that is scorned for theirs, though. I was there when integration killed segregation. I experienced it and witnessed the past subsequently die a well-deserved death. These days, I witness undeserved contempt simply because I live here.
As for the song, if "you're just on the wrong end of a one-way road" was meant to convey the artist's continuing career journey, that's one thing. If it was meant to imply that Dixie is and will remain at the "wrong end," that's quite another. The lyric seems to me to be a double entendre, a "take it as you will" twist on words, which Tim is quite good at. Beautiful song, beautiful performances, but I have to say some of the lyrics felt like an insult to me and, I'm sure, to others who love the South and have never supported injustices. Home Free music has always been an escape for me, a mood enhancer. This song did not have that effect.

Sitting in my college dorm all alone, listening to this aloud. Just got here from my home downstate and finished a 5-hour drive all by myself.
I’m 20, almost 21.. it’s my 2nd year up here.. and I’m still homesick. I already miss my parents, my little brother, and my grandpa. March isn’t so far off.. but man do I realize how much I miss home when hearing this song. Tears.
I hope everyone in this wonderful channel’s family remembers that somewhere in the world there is someone that will care for them and offer a helping hand. Don’t let this world change you too much, and try to smile whenever you can. Things can always get better.

I have a beautiful family with my parents and 6 siblings and I miss each and every one of them every day. The homesick doesn’t go away, but you do feel less sick about it. Reach out, video call, visit, and each time you go back it’s better than the last. So happy you are only 5 hours away! I am 16 hours right now and I was also in a different country last semester. It’s good to be home.

God, I remember my time away from home. I remember wanting to leave all of it behind only to find that I missed it so much. Grass being always greener and all that. As a young person, listen to the words of an old southern man. Change is inevitable and it can be very good. The key is the pathway to change and why it was made. The change for change's sake that I was seeking was a fool's errand. The changes I've made as I've learned and grown and experienced more of the world are the changes that matter, and it doesn't take away from who you are, but instead builds upon it. The TL;DR is strive to be better than who you are now, not just different cause different doesn't mean better.

    This song hits me hard.
I'm in the middle of NM with my 3 dogs.
    Got nobody, nothing.
    Just my babies and myself.
I feel so unattached to this world.
In a couple months, we'll be walking out of here. Walking with no destination.
It's painful to strive for happiness and community, but to never be wanted.
I don't drink, don't do drugs, just work hard for my own. But it's always taken away from me, for show. For hate is winning against love in this world.

Another beauty. Having Chris and his beautiful guitar playing is an added bonus. Too bad that some of your fans are taking this as dumping on the south. I just hear somebody moving along the path of life and realizing that things in the past can't be recovered - nor should they be. A hard realization no matter where you were raised.
Later: Another thought. If you replace "Dixie" with "Fargo" or "Oregon" or "Peru", does the song still make sense? Sure. But since Tim is from the south it wouldn't make sense for him to use any of those other places. Just a song about moving along life's path further and further from your roots - wherever they are.

This is such a beautiful mature reflective song. I loved it when I first heard it in concert footage, have played it regularly from the album, and I love that you went with a simple performance video. It makes me sad to see some of the negative comments. We all have to reach the point in life where we look back and realise the place where we come from has faults as well as virtues. If you can't do that, you can't move forward. This song makes me proud to be a Home Fry.

@@christopherdobney2927 Wow, I think you are the one missing the point of the song. It's about having to leave it. Look at all the displaced Southerners who end up elsewhere for jobs. The South is always a part of you, but sometimes, life requires that you leave it behind -- it is on the wrong end of a one-way street. They are not crapping on their heritage. They are saying how much they will miss the South! I see the crazy comments here trying to make it about political shit. Y'all are just looking to complain about something. But of course, art is always subjective, so if you want to interpret it that way, that is on you.

The more I listen to this the more I wonder it there is a subtle message to the people of our times.
Dixie has long stood for black oppression. It's time to to end that. Chance's verse seems to speak to this.
"You can't erase the past, but it ain't meant to last. It's time we start to learn from our mistakes."
"So Long Dixie; It's time to let you go".
" You're just on the wrong end of a one-way road."
Those lines resonates with me a person raised in the south and finally realizing that I am the recipient of many privileges simple because of the color of my skin.
    Particularly Chance's verse
