    Fun fact: Of the many numbers retired by the Yankees, O'Neill is only the 4th player (joining Ruth, Maris & Reggie) to start his career with a different team.

    I talked to LaTroy about this at the All Star Experience last year. He laughed when I brought it up, and said if he knew about O’Neill beforehand, he would have picked a different number. I then got his autograph and he jokingly wrote 21 and crossed it out, and then he wrote his Rockies number, 32.

    I’m a little late to the roast haha but Paul O’Neil was a class act and a perfect New York Yankee! The reason he never hit 300 for the Reds was because of Lou Pinella…. Pinella ruled with iron fist lol and wanted O’Neil to pull the ball and hit for power consistently which he didn’t want to do! When he arrived in the Bronx everything changed O’Neil was allowed to hit the way he knew how and the rest is history! Great vid man subbed!!

    I'm just seeing this video for the first time and it's funny that Hawkins actually wore 21 and then he wears 22 which end up being the number that Roger Clemens wore when he joined the Yankees, but that's nice that he actually wanted to honour Roberto Clemente so Yankee fans shouldn't beat up on him too much, but he did perform pretty poorly when he was in New York and he had a little bit better career in Colorado. But I think ever since he got traded from Minnesota as a top prospect, he just went downhill from there. Plus I believe he was a New Yorker as well which is kind of sad.

    • @snerdterguson
      @snerdterguson Рік тому +1

      No. They do it right. And there are no retired numbers that aren't deserved.
      Also your math is off, because 15 numbers between 1-30 are still available. All told, there are 21 numbers retired for 22 players/managers. Since the ST numbers you talk about are typically in the 70s and higher, there's no real risk of running out anytime in the next couple hundred years. Also, who cares if numbers typically weren't worn? No one looks at a Judge jersey differently because its number 99 than if it were 14 or something. The only reason any numbers mean anything at all is the player who wore it. Nothing special about the number 15 except its what Munson wore. 2 is just a number between 1 and 3 but then Jeter wore it. Hell, the only reason Ruth was 3 and Gehrig was 4 is that they used to assign numbers based on your place in the lineup. Now 3 and 4 are two of the most iconic numbers in baseball.

If Mickey Mantle wore 74, then that would be an iconic number. It doesn’t matter if they’re numbers you expect to see. And thinking the way you do makes no sense. Literally nobody should think any number on a jersey is inherently better. Get assigned 83? Become a great player and turn 83 into a prestigious number.

    That's a very interesting story Brian I don't really remember Hawkins on the Yanks and wearing #21. Me personally I don't think the Yankees should retire his number those should only go to all time greats and I think O'Neal was a very good player but he's not a all time great in my opinion. Do you think the Yankees should retire A-Rod's #13 since he was an all time great and helped them win a WS in 09? Why or why not?

      It's tricky. A-Rod has a very complicated relationship with the Yankees. I mean, he literally sued them, and the Biogenesis scandal forever ruined my perception of him. But he was also the best third baseman in franchise history. The Yankees probably *should* retire #13, but I don't think they will, especially since they already gave it to Joey Gallo.

      @@briandanuff that’s very true I don’t think they’ll retire his number any time soon but maybe if he and other players that used steroids during their careers maybe. Btw Joey Gallo’s dead that’s Joey Callo CALLO! 😂

      I would say he deserves it. He was the unnamed Captain in the years between Mattinglys retirement and 2001, it was two years later that Jeter was o named captain. He was the fire, he was the grit. And for 9 seasons he batted .303 averaging 20+ homers and getting clutch hit after clutch play in the field until its time for him to have the most clutch at bats that ended with a walk that I've ever seen in the 2001 World Series. He absolutely deserves to have his number retired. It was retired for all intents and purposes anyway. Nobody would be allowed to wear that number without the fans giving them hell.

    You told the baseball story really well here, but in my opinion the preamble about the hockey number retirement didn't add anything except unnecessary length to the video.

      The more parallel story from another sport would be how the Oklahoma City Thunder silently retired Gary Payton's number 20. He told the team not to retire it, because he only wants his name associated with Seattle basketball, not OKC, but they still won't give it out to another player.

    One of the best hitting outfielders of his era?? That’s a little much. Good hitter, over 2000 hits, not even 300 HRs, .288 avg which is great. Ken Griffey Jr? Barry Bonds? Kenny Lofton was a better hitter.
