  • This Gramophone came to my shop because you couldnt adjust the speed on it properly. As it turns out, someone seems to have tried to repair the thing with wrong length parts - a problem we will address in this video.
    Since the parts needed, are only .1mm thick, I need to build a jig to be able to drill them properly.

    Make sure you use a soft tone needle on that electric 78 recording. This machine was made for acoustic records not electric records.

      I never use anything else - soft tone is already more than loud enough.

    those "shims" are called governor springs. You were right to assume they don't look right. Looks to me like someone tried to replicate them using razor blades or another springy type metal. Most antique phonographs can be repaired with original or reproduction parts (that were built properly) Nice to see someone who knows what they are doing with mechanical devices working on it!

    Good job! I have a German 1927 Homocord (Homokord) Electro floor model wind up phonograph, that is beautifully made, and has a great sound! Unfortunately the motor brake, which is a tightening spring type, broke, and unwound the whole motor, and won't stay wound up any longer. Sure wish that there was someone like you near me to make a new part.
    By the way, what brand is your friends phonograph?
    Thanks, Don

      I haven't seen a spring type motor brake yet but if you want, you can send me some pictures and I see if I can make you one.
      The Gramophone you see here is a model Victor.

      Lift off the platter. You will see four screws that secure the motor assembly to the cabinet. Remove the four screws and the crank handle. The motor assembly can then be lifted out.

    I recently purchased a gramophone with the problem however I can't even open it, the button on the side simply refuses to budge.

      In that case, I'd suggest a mix of penetrating oil and some soft (!) hits with a small hammer. Give the penetrating fluid a good amount of time to do its work (a day or maybe even two with several applications, say, every twelve hours) and then carefully give the button some light taps. The locking "mechanism" is so simple, I couldn't think of anything that would make it stick, other than rust or hardened lubricant. If a piece had broken, the lock would most likely loose all of its functionality and the lid would come open without pressing the button.
      Good luck!

    My gramophone governor wont spin and the turntable spins uncontrolable - can you help me how?

    • @AstraWerke
      @AstraWerke  6 років тому

      Maybe the worm and gear to drive the governor are out of mesh (not contacting each other). That would be solved by loosening the clamp screws of the governor bearings and turning the bearings inwards. The bushing holes are excentrically drilled so you can adjust the distance between the governor worm and the turntable drive gear.

    7:25...the usual method of making holes in thin material(s) is by using a punch.

    • @AstraWerke
      @AstraWerke  4 роки тому

      I decided not to for several reasons:
      First and foremost, I didn't have a 2mm punch on hand.
      Then, to get the 3 holes in exactly the same place on each piece, I'd have to build the jig, anyways.
      And last not least, with a drill, I was able to do all 3 shims at the same time,
      but ramming a 2 mm punch through .3mm of steel would most likely end in a broken punch.
      All the best
      Adrian

      @@AstraWerke I wasn't criticizing!!
      ...and as for using a 2mm punch on 3mm thick metal- I WOULDN'T TRY THAT EITHER!

    • @AstraWerke
      @AstraWerke  4 роки тому

      @@daleburrell6273 And I wasn't offended,
      just trying to show my thoughts at the time :)
      I punched many holes into sheet metal as it isn't worth the trouble forcing a 6mm drill through 1mm sheet metal. You can't clamp it, it's going to distort, the hole will end up triangular, and so on and so forth.
      In this particular case, however, drilling appeared to be the better way to me.
      All the Best
      Adrian
