This episode was amazing to watch and the fallout was incredible, setting up a huge shadow that would forever haunt Max throughout his time in the square. The eventual tragedy with Bradley, his rapid degredation of his relationship with Jack, the *destruction* of it with Tanya but perhaps the most important was it sets up Lauren's cycle of anger, hate and suffering. I think she was the worst hit here leading to her eventual attempt to murder Max with the car, her alcoholism and her general moodish nature later on, made even worse when Max goes one step FURTHER and takes Lauren's similarly aged friend, Lucy Beale, as another bedfriend. This was the moment Max would never recover from.
love this channel haha, makes me realise just how complex soaps can be - beyond just trashy evening tv. would love to see a take on the similarly iconic 'you ain't my mother/yes i am' scene. that's another that's endured for over a decade
I'm Canadian, and as I've grown up, Corrie has always been there, it is as much a Canadian Institution as it is a British one. I never really followed Soap Operas due to the reputation, until recently, because I wanted to laugh at them. Then I realised how wrong I was, and still ended up laughing at the insanity of it all, yet the moments still hit hard.
I used to have such a thing for Max & the affair with Stacey was such good TV . Then i got on an empty tube train at mid day in London & he was sat there. I clocked him immediately & he looked so uncomfortable i just walked past. He is tiny & I go for big brawny Rugby types. Crush over!
Fantastic video here. Would love to see more and hear more from you. It's great to have you in the eastenders content space. Thanks -Ash from Watching Walford

Maybe there is a difference between "tension" and "suspense" but I disagree this is a perfect example of it, certainly not to a Hitchcock extent. Tension isn't just "knowing something is going to happen later, and showing a bunch of unrelated stuff to pad the episode until we get to it". Tension would be playing into this, bluffing the audience, showing someone starting to open the present but then being told not to by Tanya. Then showing someone opening it but being distracted by their phone ringing, then when they do open it, and put the disc in, the dvd player doesn't work, or there's a power cut, etc etc. That's the art of tension. Just showing other stuff and other scenes until getting to the moment in question isn't really tension. It's just delay. And it does have a somewhat suspense/tension effect doing it that way, but it's not really what the technique is. Only the last 5 minutes really deploy the art of tension.
IT WAS A CHRISTMAS JOKE MAX

Brilliant analysis of one of EastEnders' most iconic moments. Well done!

This storyline was one of the best and had some of the biggest fallout from.
