For your first block I would have blocked wood or anything but brick. You don’t produce brick, so by blocking it you reduce the odds of someone trading it to you. If you block wood, you block the resource that they need to build roads and settles so they might end up with brick stuck in their hand that they would then trade away to you. The steal ended up working out great for you.
