@@triffus1) Since this whole drama is based on incorrect statements about gender roles and sexuality in the world of FS, maybe you should see that assuming his sexual orientation in any way without him confirming it is very contraproductive.
      2) I don't understand why you think his sexual orientation has anything to do with how he decided to deliver this apology. Also writing and rehearsing an important statement before making it public is a very common thing to do, it had absolutely zero surprise factor that he did it this way. He made a mistake in his wording, so he made sure his wording is correct this time. And you are still mad.

@@Ardit-kq4bt idk how else to tell you this without being anything but blunt but there are /several/ people from top tier colleges/universities that don't sound very smart when they talk. Doesn't necessarily mean they're stupid. Should he have been able to answer better considering he's in an Ivy League school? Yes. Is it also very obvious that he was struggling to articulate an answer on the spot? Also yes. I'm not excusing his words and I am glad he took accountability and apologized, but some of y'all have to stop with the "oh but he's from Yale" comments cause the correlation isn't as strong as some of y'all think it is.

Plushenko achieved a lot as a skater. He is like dubbed the king before. Yet, it seemed that he cannot coach. It was like series of disappointments for him as a coach. There are a lot of coaches who did not compete in international competition yet very good ones. Coaching is really a case-to-case basis. Some even say, genius won't know how to teach an ordinary person because they did things with ease from the start.

People are butt hurt. There was never going to be a good answer to such a terrible question. I actually hate the fact that 1) athletes are put in a position to answer such questions, and 2) social media has made things this way, and I don't think that is right. It leads people to attack athletes who might think differently from them or interpret and project what an athlete thinks even if they, the projector, is wrong. The cancel culture is really getting on my nerves. If you dare step slightly to the side, even on a question that basically sets you up for failure, people show no mercy.

He made a comment he thought was "off the record", and the next thing was a so-called "quote" from John, all over the newspapers. You can look it up if you're interested.

      1. He's a public figure whether he likes that or not, that comes with the sport.
      2. It's not "cancel culture" and people need to stop using that buzzword without knowing what that means. He made an unfortunate comment, got called out for it, apologized it. That's it. Yes, some dumbasses really did try to contact his sponsors but Nathan handled it the way he should have. If Vincent Zhou is allowed to still participate in sports at all Nathan is not going anywhere.
      3. I don't even think the question was a setup, that's just how straights see the sport and think there's no issue saying that to other people's faces, Nathan obviously wasn't equipped to politely handle that kind of genuinely bigoted question but he's learned. We can only hope the interviewer has as well.

Lame. Just lame. Nathan didn’t say anything offensive as far as I could see. This is a “woke” culture abounded by weakness which is causing many, as I pointed out in the last com box to feign fake outrage over opinions not shared by pc activist!
I’m Black and I’ve always loved watching figure skating since I was a kid. Which is still considered a “White sport.” I wasn’t impressed by Debi Thomas when she competed. Always thought that the male skaters were far more impressive to watch. Because they executed powerfully difficult skating routines.
My favorite female skater was Midori Ito. Because she was performing difficult jumps at a time when such executions were frowned upon. Especially among female skaters.
Yes, figure skating attracts gay male skaters. Such as the battle of the Brian’s. Both men were very talented. And I also loved the succession of heterosexual Russian male skaters who dominated the sport after the reign of Brian Boitano.
Including the rivalry between Yagudin & Plushenko.

You don't just post an apology because you don't want people to be mad at you.
I have never seen so many people in FS fandom come out and speak about the issue and not just from a certain fandom that all of you are thinking about. As the world champion in FS and a representative of the sport he needs to do more, MUCH more and I hope he really shows growth in the next season.

I find it unbelievable how people are so ready to forgive Nathan Chen. Yes of course everyone deserves the chance to learn and grow from their mistakes but he apoligized a week later after the interview with a PR written apology. I'm not buying that. Used to love him skate but not cheering for him from now on. Praising and forgiving discrimination in this sport is done by ISU already. I'm not willing to add to that.
On a side note: love the content paola thanks for introducing me into the sport in the first place 💜

Nathan victimized himself, a straight man, and completely dismissed/diminished the struggles of gay people on the sport all while making misogynistic comments and people have the nerve to say he just used the wrong words to get his point across, unbelievable. Straight men can be as awful as they wish and there always will be people, and sadly many women, making excuses for them.

i mean there will clearly always be debate about it at this point and i'm sure he's lost a handful of fans/support in the past couple of days that he may or may not get back, though i think it bears noting that he did apologize and explained what he really meant to say. actions will speak louder than words of course and all his prejudices obviously aren't gone over two days, but people can't demand a rightful apology from him and then give him shit for doing exactly that and taking accountability. you don't have to accept the apology if it is yours to accept or reject but many (famous) people never take accountability, and nathan did.

@@heartyearns3129 Reading an obviously scripted apology that did not even acknowledge his own victimization is not “taking accountability”, and I demanded nothing from him, after hearing that mess of an interview I expected nothing of him at all.

@@FanyLI I'm pretty sure op wasn't referring to *you* specifically when they said "demand a rightful apology." And as they also said, you don't have to accept it if it *is* yours to accept or reject, aka if you're not LGBTQ+ and/or a girl or woman then you don't have a say in this. Would you have rather Nathan not address it at all, then? That's so much worse and it's terrible to think that public figures should just shrug off problematic statements. And yeah it clearly was written/rehearsed beforehand but there's truly nothing wrong with him preparing to speak more clearly.
