  • This video has been requested, or questions have been asked relating to this topic, so many times now, that I felt it was only right I sit down and talk through how and why we chose all our children's names when they were babies.

I'm Lucy. I'm the camera woman, director, editor, photographer, and general organiser of all thing around these parts. I also grow babies... that's a pretty special super power!
My long suffering blogger/vlogger/instagram husband is Rich; he is amazingly supportive (and sometimes just about tolerant) of this crazy online world that plays such a big part in our lives.
Together we are parents to our little tribe of kiddos; eight-year-old Dylan, six-year-old Everly, three-year-old Quinn and one-year-old Wylder... oh and we're parents to two fluffy babies too; Darcy (the black and white cat) and Wentworth (the grey and white one).
It's a total cliche to say it; but my little tribe is my entire world.

Loved this video! I love baby names and reasons why people choose them. I've always liked the idea of middle names giving people more options!

Hannah Willey Thank you, and yes I feel like middle names are a great way of giving your kids a bit of choice over their own identity. x

In Germany, if you have two names (not hyphenated of course), you can literally choose which name you go by. Some parents even give their kids 2 names but just call them by their middle name because it sounds better, this if of course not a German thing, but I've noticed this a few times (as a primary teacher). So Quinn could just "stay" Quinn. If you tell the teacher before school starts, the name she goes by can be print in bold in the class list, so other teachers know which name she goes by, that's what we do at least. Also, I have two names, but always just went with my first name, the middle name was just on legal documents, not on class lists at uni etc. Anyway, I like all the names, especially Quinn, I'd definitely go by that too haha.

Maia Matilda yes, it’s similar here. If she wants to go by Quinn then we’ll just tell the school and that will be her “given name” but her official name stays the same. In fact we have a lot of people in the family (more commonly in older generations though) who go by their middle names, so we don’t find it weird. But it does seem to really confuse some people for some reason! 🤷🏼‍♀️

Dear Beautiful I think you have to just be consistent and not switch around all the time :) I know it’s hard because she’s probably not even sure what she wants haha. it’s obviously different when you decide the child will be called by their middle name before birth, so it’s done from the beginning, rather than when the child is older and some people use this, other people that name. If she likes Quinn and wants to be called that, why not stick to it. Always saying Ashlyn Quinn would be quite a mouthful for me (personally I’m not the biggest fan of hyphenated names and it would be like that then) but maybe that’s what she wants and what makes her happy :) x

Maia Matilda At the moment she gets called a mixture of both and doesn’t seem to mind. We predominately call her Quinn and only use both when she’s on trouble. But then she does refer to herself as Ashlyn when she meets people. At all of her clubs and classes she’s chosen to be Ashlyn. And at preschool all her labels and things say Ashlyn, but they tend to call her Quinn at her request. Basically I think she likes using both names, but in different scenarios. At the moment she says she wants to be called Ashlyn Quinn at big school, so I think we’ll just have to see how it goes when the time comes. I know the teachers will be fine with whatever she chooses.
I just never realised what a can of worms we were going to end up with when we named her. I’m still not really sure how she ended up being Quinn instead of Ashlyn in the first place. 🤣🤣🤣

Wylder is the only unusual one. Haha
I know so many people named Dylan and Everly. Quinn I’ve heard a couple times.

Really enjoyed this video. Love baby name videos. I have a Charlotte (3) and Louisa (almost 1) named from Pride and Prejudice (love literary names)
Only had two names for Charlotte, she was going to be Charlotte or Jennifer and had a whole list for Louisa, who I was determined was going to be Astrid or Robyn until I found Louisa.
I’d like to see a video on how you got together, I’m a sucker for a romance story. My husband and I met at my first work place (library, natch.) He’d been contracted to upgrade the fire alarm and well, sparks flew and we got married 18 months later. Haha!

Ahhh, I love a literary name. My cats are Darcy and Wentworth after Mr Darcy from Pride and Prejudice and Captain Wentworth from Persuasion.
And that is such a cute love story... ours really isn't that exciting, but it would still be fun to sit down and talk it though I think. x

      Thanks.
Your video has also cheered me up as I've struck down with tonsillitis again! Second time in as many months!
