I don't expect much from SFU today, but I don't think a lot of people get how good those first few albums were. I mean, that's if you like Death metal.
Haunted is better than any Cannibal Corpse album. Dude I'm old you're not going to change my mind on this. Fucking loved that album when I was in high school you kidding me?! Don't think you even listened to anything besides those graveyard whatever albums. Maximum Violence had its moments too.
I didn’t have many expectations for the new Swallow the Sun album (haven’t listened to them much) and I ended up enjoying Shining a lot more than I expected. Different for sure, but I liked it for what it was. Great video as always, just sharing my thoughts.
I need to check Fleshgod. Another person I watch ranked this album high, so it's interesting to see it on the other side. I really enjoy SepticFlesh, so you got me morbidly curious 😂
Kerry King easily won this category for me. I've known for decades that Hanneman was truly the magic sauce behind Slayer. Kerry did me a favor and actually proved it.
Slayer has been boring for decades now, just like Metallica. They are simply legacy bands. Talented musicians but as song writers, they lost it. And this is not an elitist statement, for the most part only Met. I'll listen to today is a few select songs on Load/reload and Divine is my favorite Slayer album. But everything after that for both of them? Meh.
It was fun to see this video please do this again next year! Only ones I disagreed with were Darkest hour and Linkin Park. While I wouldn’t put it in my best I thought the DH was a big step up from migrant flora which I found really bland. Linkin Park I really enjoyed brought me back to the first two albums and I thought the album has a lot of energy and memorable choruses
The last several years have been kinda disappointing to me. Theres a few good albums here and there but i've been slowing down on collecting new music lately and just going for older stuff i'm missing in my collection.
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! We trying to go all over the metal spectrum (and occasionally off it) here. Some of the best bands out there were underground at one point too so I think digging for those rare gems pays off.
@@thrallsofmetal I think what a lot of people don't get, is there is a big difference between someone who just listens to the same small handful of bands and those who listen to those bands plus so much more. Its fine if you like what you like, but I don't care to hear about your opinion on music if its just the norm.
The 2 albums of Slayer that are my least favourites, Repentless and Christ Illusion, are Kerry albums. I've decided to pass on it and Category 7, even though I love all the players involved. There are too many thrash artists from the 80s who just need to retire. I don't want these guys up there thrashing away still in 10 years looking like Rob Halford. But every year I'm finding it harder and harder to enjoy newer metal. Everything is so clean and over produced now, it grates on my ears. Hell, even album covers look too clean and over produced now. The only new band that I feel happy for is Bloodywood. They just feel fresh to me.
Gaerea and Unleash the Archers have disappointed me the most... I really had high hopes for their new albums, but... I don't like the shift of direction they took respectively. Gaerea tried to be more accessible, whereas Unleash the Archers came off too generic.
I'm not surprised you ended your video with the two albums you did, you ranting about the motley crew EP made me bust a gut. The thing i am surprised about is you didnt mention, the equal parts horrendous/ utterly hilarious cover of "Hair of the Dog" on the Six Feet Under Album.😂
Yeah i'll be honest i was pretty disappointed with that album. Its just not that catchy like any of the previous albums. Plus waiting 19 years or whatever for this album is kind of a joke really. Bruce and Roy Z were writing their best songs back then and the long wait made all that energy dry out. I don't like alot of these bands new releases where it take 5 to 10+ years to make. King Diamond i'm worried about.
In a sense of the word, nightmares of the decomposed at least had an unintentional entertainment value due to the eeeeeee thing. To me, it always sounded like if eric cartman from south park tried to imitate a death metal frontman. The new one doesn't even have that, it just... exists. But yeah, arguing which SFU record is worse is a pointless ordeal. What I would argue about instead is the new darkest hour record, which I found to be amazing! Great video, as always!
Enjoyed the video, think it is interesting topic, and for me a lot of these albums were very underwhelming, maybe unrealistically high expectations (Gaerea), also think there seems to be a few bands trying to fill the headlining void that seems to be happening across the metal world, and as a result bands are becoming more accessible to a wider audience. As i lay crying, dust bolt, six feet under are all horrendous and happy to never hear again. Cheers!!
Category7 and Kerry King were two albums that I just couldn't get into. Super groups are tricky for sure and as much as people like to glamorize "bands", I think there is something to be said for having a primary songwriter surrounded by role players who can do their part. Songwriting is such a different thing that playing an instrument and this album suffered from no one reigning in the guitar noodles and drums being "overkill" haha. Kerry King was just forgettable in every way. Nothing really stood out enough to make we want to jam this album. Also, maybe I missed it, but did Vomit Forths album Terrified of God not make your top 40? Maybe I just missed it, but that one was fire and probably one of my faves of the year.
the coverart on category7 reminds me of those times in the record stores where they stock these type of releases, the huge sale on retail prizes when all other items tht ppl wanted desired are gone , and the leftover cd's and where u in a most futile attempt tries to find the one your lookin for, and then this coverart shows up, and u like, yes, its only such crap left here, cheap AI coverart tht oozes some amateur japanese or asian group tht tries superhard to sound like hammerfall or gamma ray or some very dull symphony x copy or another heavy metal record ,one just cringe when seeing this cover, ITS FRIGGIN CHEAP NOBODY WANTS GAS STATION LEFTOVERS!!!!
Also I might be the only one that likes new Dust Bolt granted I wasn't aware of it until Jon Barbass of @heavymetalphilosophy put it on his Top 10 of the year for Thrash! Regardless I do notice something off while listening to it enough to understand where your coming from as disappointing but not to the point of disenjoyment or whatever the right word is for that🤔🤷
Keep on seeing comments about them, dude the first few albums are classic just like early Deicide, I don't trust anyone's opinion on Death metal who does not agree as someone whose been listening to that shit for damn near 30 years.
I loved the Fleshgod album. Probably my favorite or atleast tied with King. I'm not the extreme metal fan you are though so I think this album was made for people like me. The Swallow the Sun bummed me out and I don't want to talk about it............ and I thought the Category 7 and Kerry King records were a solid 7/10 if I'm keeping the glass half full.
Yeah that category 7 album was just awful. Kinda like going back to the Kerry King record, he just proved that Hanneman was the brains behind the band.
As much as I did not enjoy the Six Feet Under record or Motley Crue EP, nothing compares to how god awful that Anvil record was and is. Truly the worst record of 2024 in my personal opinion.
I'm not going lie, I've grown to enjoy the latest Fleshgod Apocalypse and Linkin Park. The reasons you stated; I can totally hear it. But maybe I just had less expectations and took it for what they were.
Category 7 and Kerry King didn't do much for me so I concur with you. Motley Crue was just too easy. Garaea was one where I don't understand the hype. Nothing stuck with me.
I seemed to like Shining more than most. Sure it's different, but I do enjoy it. My biggest disappointment was Maul -In The jaws Of Bereavement!..Its not bad particularly, but it's a massive step down from their debut, and after I jammed it a few times, I've never had the urge to return to it.
I was a bit disappointed in the new Trelldom album. First one since 2007 and they completely changed the style to a very soft and experimental style of metal. Not bad, but the first 3 Trelldom albums are 10/10 pure black metal classics, and I wish they stuck with that.
Necrotic Nick- I don't think they're bad but I was kinda hoping for more from them. As the list goes on in this video the more disappointed I get... and you can tell.
@benng4376 I didn't bother listened to new Nocturnus AD album because the only really good album by them is The Key. I haven't really dove into Gaerea.
Ronnie Radke called me an incel the other day cuz I said that album sucked lol. I have seen mixed feelings on Gaerea, I disagree tho, I thought it was their best album to date. I don’t believe they had a vocalist change…that’s news to me.
I never really enjoyed fleshgod apocalypse. contrast between brutal metal and symphonics is too articulate and not blended in enough for me. Septicflesh is everything Fleshgod is not. (definitely the golden standard for me as well) or Carach Angren for that matter.
I appreciate the list overall. Most are ones you wouldn't automatically wanna jump on, like FFDP or something. The Metal Meltdown guy just kinda picked low hanging fruit. Honestly, my absolute biggest disappointment was The Crown's newest record. I was shocked at how bland and unmemorable it was. And it's almost worse when it's not even a "fun" bad like SFU or something. When it's a band you love that is not known for putting out subpar records, it's kinda worse, IMO.
It is unfortunate that there is a bad list out there. I laughed my bitt off on the comments and thank goodness I do not own any of these. Keep up the good content.
Oof, for me, some albums that are just ok at best or are straight up boring/suck would be the latest from Deicide, Hauntologist, David Reece, Sonata Arctica, Atrophy, I Am The Intimidator and Spectral Voice
I knew Barnes would make one of your year end lists somewhere 😂😂😂. Christ, how bad does music have to be to be even worse than a SFU album??? Congratulations to Nikki Sixx on that.
Kerry King is not bad, it just should come as the next Death Angel album, Nocturnus and SFU are not bad either, Category 7 listened once and second time maybe, Motley Crue was always not listenable for me ever, worst band.
I was so disappointed with swallow the sun, they are one of if not my favourite doom bands ever and there last record was probably their best, then they turned into katatonia. It wasnt a bad album by any means but it was very disappointing. (Btw did ppl not like that gaerea album? I loved it)
Necrotic Nick- Same here. I don't hate the new album but it's also not what I wanted from them at all. People seemed really split on the new Gaerea. I did find it disappointing though especially following such a monster of an album with Mirage.
Mine would be the debut from sovereign, because i thought it was going to be my next most favorite norwegian thrash band after inculter and nekromantheon, but it just didnt work. Also somehow the new Sarke, although it isnt bad per se. I think the Nocturnus album is quite good. Kerry Kings album did sound exactly as expected. Nothing special at all. Havent had time to check out the new god dethroned.
My biggest disappointment was Mutilation Barbecue's debut Almagamations of Gore. Their self-titled EP.... perfect. The Abortion Ambulance single... perfect. You guys hit the nail on the head. Where the fuck were the guitars???? The production is horrible. Listen to the Abortion Ambulance single first 25 secs, then jump to the album version. Such a drop in quality. It's embarrassing that their debut album would be worse than their earlier offerings. It's not how the songs were written. If the production was just better, I'd have been so happy with that album but now I struggle to listen it.
Six Feet Under has sucked for sometime now and I happen to like Chris Barnes for the most part. However I did love the Category 7 album. To each their own, I guess.
Worst album of the year for me is definitely Marilyn Manson. It deserved the #1 spot on my "worst albums of 2024" video that I posted over the weekend. It was worse than Inquisition's album that dropped in January.
Most disappointing for me was definitely Swallow The Sun. One of my favourite bands and I loved every album until this one, also disappointed with the latest Alcest and Rotting Christ
Necrotic Nick- Yeah, that one was the miss I didn't see coming. I had figured they'd follow up Moonflowers with another dark, somber banger. I probably should have read some of the press releases early on.
Yeah that Kerry King album is meh. Slayer's Repentless is better and that wasn't that great either. My least favorite Slayer album. Deicide's new album was meh along with the previous one as well. God Dethroned's new one was okay just not memorable. Same with The Crown. I prefer the first 2 Crown albums that were melodic death metal. Warlord's new album was actually okay. Need more listens. I like the new Groza album. Thats off the top of my head. I know theres more but not alot. I know, thats pretty sad lol.
Necrotic Nick- It's an idea I've been toying with for awhile and I figured why the hell not. It's good way to balance out all the praise I heaped upon the albums I loved this year lol.
I disagree with Fleshgod Apocalypse. I get why you didn't like it, but I thought the songs were a bit more memorable here, and especially knowing the lyrical content, it made me enjoy it more. It was a good album and ranked high-ish on my best albums of the year. That Swallow the Sun album was a major letdown, though. I get they don't want to make such dreary music all the time, but this was far too poppy and uplifting for my tastes. A real shame. They have a decent back catalogue, though, so there's plenty of great albums to fall back on. This one is for sure their worst.
Gaerea takes everything great and leaves out everything shitty about black metal. The power of the new vocalist is a step up to match how huge their sound has stepped up. I definitely disagree with your take.
I don't think the new Jinjer material is all that great. Too much like Walflowers. imho but i do still need to here the full thing but I am pretty sure i will be disappointed.
I bet people can’t wait to see Six feet under on tour with Nile. Willing to bet Chris will do or say something stupid and six feet under will be removed from the tour.
That’s one of the best of the year, those guys are on a whole other lvl compared to most, them and malignancy are the kings of the technical side of brutal death, in a league of their own
Only album I have on this list is Kerry King. I think I’ve only listened to it 3-4 times. It’s not the best or the worst I’ve heard, and I got a ticket to see his band next month. I actually can’t stand the new Judas Priest. No KK or Glenn? It’s not JP. It’s a tribute band. I’ve only listened to it twice and done with it.
Necrotic Nick- It was pretty much exactly what I expected from Kerry King which isn't necessarily a bad review but it's also not a good one. I loved the new Judas Priest though. Glenn is on it but as a writer since he wasn't well enough to perform on the album. He and Richie worked out a way for him to transcribe his riff ideas to Ritchie so he could play them for Glenn. I think it worked and I'm glad they had Glenn involved as much as they could.
@@thrallsofmetal I could have seen JP at Aftershock Fest but instead went to CDF which I was glad I did. It’s funny you mentioned Evildead, they were there at CDF. I didn’t dislike them but don’t want to see them again. Mork and Power From Hell were great. As was Soilent Green, Dismember and Sodom. 🤘
It comes to absolutely no shock that Six Feet Under & Motley Crue were disappointments/worst albums of 2024.
Necrotic Nick- Oh, there's others. With each album I go over the more cynical I get.
I don't expect much from SFU today, but I don't think a lot of people get how good those first few albums were. I mean, that's if you like Death metal.
Ill always stand firm in my beliefs that Tim Lambesis' numero uno issue is that hes a closeted homosexual and doesnt know how to deal with it properly
That Evil Dead album is truly something awful. That’s a perfect example of what NOT to do after a decent comeback album a few years ago.
How can you be disappointed with an SFU record? They've been a running joke in metal for 3 decades now.

I don’t think Six Feet Under and Motley Crue can be considered disappointments at this point🤣
Interesting how you have Gaerea in this video… it was one of my favourites of the year in terms of black metal.
Necrotic Nick- I was hyped for that one when it dropped but for me it missed the mark especially after how amazing Mirage was.
Black Metal?!
@@beardcog1267 Well, post-black metal with some metalcore elements in the vocals and some of the drum parts.

The only thing that I like from the last sfu album is the solo in their worst song, Neanderthal
Hey you haven't done something like this in the past years. This should be interesting and fun! 😂🤘
Do a Six Feet Under album ranking pllllleeeeeaaaaaasssssseeeeee 🙏😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣
Gaerea takes everything great and leaves out everything shitty about black metal. The power of the new vocalist is a step up to match how huge their sound has stepped up. I definitely disagree with your take.
Kerry king 🥱
I don't think the new Jinjer material is all that great. Too much like Walflowers. imho but i do still need to here the full thing but I am pretty sure i will be disappointed.
Intro song?
I bet people can’t wait to see Six feet under on tour with Nile. Willing to bet Chris will do or say something stupid and six feet under will be removed from the tour.
You know what Nick… say what you will about Linkin Park you tried so hard, but in the end it didn't really matter…
Woke metal is awful
Necrotic Nick- So… what’s “woke metal” then?
The most boring album i sat through is Defeated Sanity's Chronicles of Lunacy.
It's a top 5 album for me.
@benng4376 Wow nice good for you 👍
Necrotic Nick- I really dug that one despite it not making my top 40. I think it might be one of their best honestly.
That’s one of the best of the year, those guys are on a whole other lvl compared to most, them and malignancy are the kings of the technical side of brutal death, in a league of their own
@@thrallsofmetalcriminal not kicking out someone from that top 40 to make room 😂
Well at least we know you have working hot water! If for some reason I'm allowed to visit I can take a hot ass shower🚿 🛁 🛀
surprised necrolution by massacre wasn't here. That album is flat out bland, generic and stock. Tho that's most of their discography.
