love this, no predictable irony or sarcasm about "oh its sonic isnt that silly", just genuinely engaging with the emotions of the music itself, absolutely what I come to this channel for
"Who's Elise" ...A princess who, depending on which timeline you focus on, either never met Sonic or became his human love interest complete with a resurrection kiss. Welcome to the hell that is the lore implications of Sonic 06.
Also a character with more potential than the fans give her credit for. She's still a bad character, don't get me wrong. But the concept still has potential that could be used in a much better way and would make her a good character. But the fans are too focused on "Eww she kissed Sonic !" to see that.
One thing I love about Live and Learn is mostly the context behind it; Live and Learn's melody is EVERYWHERE in SA2's menus (and in a couple level tracks too), but yoh never hear the full song until the very end of the game where the final boss takes place, and it's like the game keeps giving you tastes of what Live and Learn is like, until you actually hear the full song by the end of the game.
I just learned something absolutely crazy about Crush 40. They're music is amazing, but ironically it's a miracle their music matches the games so well as apparently their writer actually doesn't even play the games nor does he even see the games as they're being made. He just writes the song based on the story synopsis. That's amazing, it's like how Martin O'Donnell wrote the Halo theme in a car drive to work one day.
That'll be about the singer Johnny Gioelli, right? Who does write a lot of Crush 40's lyrics. That process makes sense to me. But the music has always been written by Jun Senoue, who is an employee of SEGA, so is in the same room as other people making Sonic every weekday. I can't remember if Senoue ever said he's played one of the games, but it must have happened in the past 32 years he's been working there. Maybe he's too busy.

You're on the mark with Egg Dragoon, it's the fight where you can really tell that Eggman's snapped in regards to Sonic, no more platitudes or grandiose presentations to the process, he's simply pulled out a prototype robot specifically engineered to KILL Sonic. It's so serious that even Sonic is telling Eggman to cool it, which is insane to me. They're literally plummeting to the earth's core and all Eggman cares about is killing Sonic, he doesn't even talk smack! It's because of this that Egg Dragoon is still my favorite boss track from all of Sonic, the severity of the situation is unmatched.
All of this. The Egg Dragoon is genuinely my favourite non-Super fight in the series because of the sheer intensity from a plot standpoint, and also Unleashed music is SO GOOD. The fight after this is arguably even more important, since it's for the fate of the world, and the orchestra certainly makes that obvious musically. But in that fight you're playing as Super Sonic with the Gaia Colossus as backup; the Egg Dragoon boss track is just so damn personal, a fight that might genuinely kill Sonic or Eggman in the end.
Egg Dragoon is one of my top favorite moments in Sonic history. For the first time ever between Eggman and Sonic, it felt like "all bets are off, this is going to be our FINAL confontation". Sure, more games happened afterward; but this song really hammered home the feeling of NOW OR NEVER.

Live and Learn has the distinction of being arguably the most iconic Sonic song EVER. So popular they play it at the end of every single concert they do. The band that performed it, most consistently the vocalist, Johnny Gioeli, and guitarist Jun Senoue (Who is also the lead composer for the many Sonic games, including Adventure 1 and 2), are legends.
33:58 : Knuckles is connected to this slower Rap and R&B for a few reasons: Firstly, Knuckles is a intentional contrast to Sonic: He's an Echidna (another spikey mammal) rather then a Hedgehog, he's red to Sonic's blue, he's power/strength to Sonic's speed, he's got a moon crescent on his chest vs Sonic's "sun" circle, and to tie into the next point, he's introspective and tied to his past/ancestry wheras Sonic is a free-spirit always doing things without second guessing himself. So the musical genre reflects that personality difference. Knuckles, within the story/lore of the games, is one of the last surviving Echidna, which are characterized as a sort of Mesoamerican (particularly Mayan) ancient race that worshiped the Chaos emeralds, particularly a large central one known as the Master Emerald, and Knuckles sees it as his duty to guard the Master Emerald and the ruins around it not even knowing why or what his origins are. Sonic Adventure 1, the game this theme comes from (though a remix is also in SA2) is actually all about that Ancient Echidna race, and this early into the series, Knuckles was still more of a situational ally or neutral party then a core part of the hero team, and was primarily devoted to guarding the Emerald more then saving the world. So Knuckles theme in SA1 being a slower, and more "ethnic" track is tied into those narrative and character traits of him questioning his purpose and heritage, and you can obviously hear a lot of what I've mentioned in the lyrics. Finally, and to connect to my point about the ethnic, African american connotations those musical genres are tied to, is that Knuckles was also kinda coded as a Black character: In Sonic Adventure the Echidna are Indigenous, as I said, but Knuckles as originally designed a few titles earlier in the series was intended to Black Caribbean theme: His spines look like hair deads, his shoes have a raasta color scheme, some marketing materials have him speaking in a Jamaican accent (tho that was abandoned), and in both Adventure games a lot of the music associated with him is Hip Hop or R&B. Other people have mentioned this to you, i'm sure, but in Sonic Adventure 2 in particular, the music for each character's playable levels (not just their main vocal themes, Unknown from ME is of course Knuckle's Vocal theme for both games, each character's theme is similarly a musical and lyrical encapsulation of that character's while vibe and personality) have music in different genres which reflect the characters (unlike in SA1, where characters shared stages so they couldn't be musically tuned to different characters). I'm not a big music person so I'm maybe butchering the exact genres and subgenres here, but Sonic has the quick, fun rock tracks you'd expect, Shadow has a more industrial, grungy set of rock tracks with vaugely emo vocals that's hard to make out, Knuckles has, as i've said, rap and R&B, Rouge (the bat, a sort of catwoman, femme fatal spy/thief character) has jazz and bossa nova, Tails (who in SA2 is in a mech) has more electronic sounding rock with synth elements, and Eggman like tails has more electronic or synth heavy rock, but with more mechanical and industrial (in a literal, not just a musical) sounds and tones, with clanks and grinding etc.

Uknown from M.E. being compared to a Greek Chorus is something I never considered before, but I do love that comparison. The song is indeed meant to be more blunt and kind of forceful more than Sonic is, since a lot of the lyrics are entirely literal towards Knuckles' story and character, and he indeed can be described like the song itself. Loud and a bit foolhardy, a bit boastful, but also serene and wistful during the R&B sections. It kind of feels like he wrote the song himself in that regard, and I like when character themes reflect their subject matter like that.
especially since if there's three traits to describe knuckles, they'd be stubborn, naive, and _straightforward._ he's the exact type to not only have to take a moment to parse figurative language and symbolism, but also to react _before_ he's put the piece together. and, appropriately ... unknown from M.E. is basically almost entirely literal exposition, dotted with some basic similes and like a _single_ metaphor. it is entirely upfront, entirely earnest, and puts basically all its creative language into hyping up knuckles's strength. which is _extremely_ on the nose, but, hey, knuckles is an extremely on the nose dude

Yes, the Sonic & Knuckles Flying Battery Zone Act 2 is on the Sega Genesis in 1994 on its 1988 sound hardware including the Yamaha YM2612 OPN2 FM synthesis chip, configured here for 5x 4-operator FM voices, plus drum sample playback (instead of a 6th FM voice). It is in fact the only track here to be generated on-console from sequencing data (whereas all the others are recorded music tracks from newer consoles). Funnily enough, it was the same in the first part, but the track was from Mystic Cave Zone from Sonic 2 (1992).
I like how you pointed out that open your heart was mature, the whole city gets flooded in the final story of Sonic Adventure 1 and I'm pretty sure everyone who were in the buildings are dead, it's a pretty dark thought.
It was actually confirmed by Sega that everyone in Station Square was conveniently able to evacuate as Perfect Chaos attacked, which, to me, feels like a cop-out and kind of lessens the blow of the whole flood if the only consequence was just property damage. Not to mention, it doesn't make much sense since the flood happened so suddenly, so how did anyone have that much time to escape?

When I was a kid, I thought 'Flying Battery' meant it was a mobile Battery for his forces, but I'm relatively sure now it's a 'Battery' of cannons. A flying fortification. Also, my favorite Sonic theme, along with Sky Sanctuary from the same era/game. On a side note, while Sonic Adventure is regarded as the first 3D Sonic, Sonic 3D Blast was actually the first, having come out 2 years earlier.
Blast isn't really 3D. It's just isometric and using shading similar to Donkey Kong Country, not actual 3D. Technically Sonic R or Sonic Jam was the first 3D game as they both used actual polies. But Jam was just for the level select. Even Sonic the Fighters was real 3D, though it's not really an actual Sonic game.
@@TheHouseofIvo not particularly, sonic 3d blast very much is just 2d sprites over a 2d background that fakes a degree of depth using a projection method that's been around since the eighteenth century at least, and has been used by video games as early on as q'bert back in 1982. the one thing 3d blast has going for it in terms of selling the illusion further is the amount of rotations sonic has ... as well as the stiff, lifeless posing in his animations that really sells the 90s cgi look, for better or worse it's one of those things you notice p. quickly when you realize that all those checkerboard squares on the ground are the exact same size and orientation regardless of where they are on screen, and how sonic doesn't grow in size as he jumps towards the camera and then shrink back down as he falls, which ... isn't how perspective works, at all

11:50 : Shadow is Sonic most iconic rival, from full antagonist working for Eggman to little by little as games advance into some frenemies. Like Shadow is grumpy as a rule and finds Sonic attitude really annoying. He'll try to do everything by himself, is really proud of who he is, and because of trauma, tend to push away people fearing to feel loss again. But when the chips are on the table, man oh man Shadow is probably Sonic strongest ally, and one of the four characters that have a canonical seven emerald super form. They aren't related outside of some theories as Shadow is around 40+ years older than Sonic but doesn't age

The way you're able to pick up on so much about the context of each piece from the music alone is incredible. Even being able to identify a character customization theme as being about "suiting up," as you put it. Stunning!
I love watching you go on this journey. I've been a Sonic fan since I was 3 years old and the series has had so many ups and downs but the music has always been constantly good. It also feels really good to see the series bigger than its ever been and actually thriving.
Live and Learn is such an iconic track for the series, it's kind of transcended its own game to become a sort of anthem for all Sonic products. Whenever Sonic was added to Super Smash Bros. for the first time, Live and Learn was the track used to represent him.
Egg Dragon is probably my favorite Eggman Boss theme. It really sells you on just how insane Eggman really is and how threatening his Machines can be, if he really tries he can cook up some terrifying metal monstrositys. Afterall he is the E.G.G.M.A.N. he has the Masterplan.
One I'd HEAVILY recommend is "What I'm Made Of" from Sonic Heroes, its by far one of my all time favourites Also Sonic Forces' Final Boss theme, I can't remember its name but it's phenomenal imo
These Sonic OST reactions have been an absolute delight. As a lifelong Sonic fan around your age, it's fascinating seeing someone approach the music from this series with no prior knowledge and and enjoy it so much! I have just about zero understanding of music theory or any of the technical stuff behind how music 'works', but when you use your musical background to put into words all the very deliberate choices that were made in crafting these OSTs and the feelings and information they convey to the listener, I find myself nodding along every time because yes! That's exactly it! It really shows the power of music, that many others like myself understood the messages the OSTs were sending us without knowing exactly why. Your descriptions of each character's soundscapes and musical identities were eye opening - especially the way you described Shadow without knowing who he was yet! Even though I've loved Sonic music since the Genesis era, I'm still learning and noticing new things about each track through your more educated observations. I hope you're enjoying delving into the Sonic universe as a whole, music and games and all, and don't get too overwhelmed by the intensity of the fanbase when it comes to either reaction/gameplay requests or backseating. There's probably a well-intentioned element of 'oh, we need him to know how to play the game right, in case he ends up not enjoying it to its full potential!' in there that easily becomes overbearing. From the OST and Generations videos so far it really feels like you've tapped into the soul of the Sonic franchise and the way audiences have understood and grown attached to the characters over the years. Hopefully you keep having fun with it! Looking forward to seeing you finish up Shadow Generations~ (an ending note - your enthusiasm for the Sonic R soundtrack is wonderful. The remixes throughout the soundtrack are insane. Deep, melodic, intense, beautiful, and catchy. You cannot help, but want to turn the volume up. It is so good
something worth note is the main game themes of the 3d sonic games also have a habbit of often being the final boss theme and the theme of the villain. more often than not its a duality, it can be about sonic or the villain or both at once. live and learn, open your heart, ect so it helps to analyze them both as main game themes and climactic battle themes
Unknown from M.E. is what got me into playing Adventure 1 on PC like two years ago. I love Knuckles and how serious he was back then, even if it wasn't that much serious. I'm glad they're trying to get my boy back to his glory nowadays.
I am glad that you made the Journey comparison to Crush 40 because that is not a coincidence (although they couldn't any more different). Before Crush 40, Johnny Gioeli was in a hard rock band called Hardline, who he sings for to this day. The band featured Neal Schon, the founder and guitarist of Journey, and Deen Castronovo, the drummer for Wild Dogs and Bad English (the latter whom Schon also played for), who eventually joined Journey. If I recall correctly, Gioeli has once or is still is married to Schon's sister.
If you want to know more about who Shadow is, Sonic x Shadow Generations has an option on the main menu "Shadow's Story" that gives a good short summary.
Sonic Adventure and Adventure 2 actually gave each playable character their own theme song so it'd neat to see what you make of each character based on them
You enjoying Elise's theme so much, there's another somewhat similar song from Frontiers called "Dear Father" and not going to lie: it's a heartbreaking song and may hit you particularly hard due to the subject matter. Sonic Frontiers has a lot of "Father" theming it regarding Eggman and an AI creation of his with the song sung from the AI's perspective. There's another song sung in the AI's perspective that's considered a "true ending" called "I'm With You" and is still about Eggman with a completely different just as sweet theme to it. Both these songs hit hard but I feel Dear Father would definitely hit you harder. Another song not from Frontiers that has a very similar beat is called "Dear My Friend" but of course comes from a friendship perspective. Sonic really do got them absolutely emotional smacks in the faces sometimes.
Sonic Forces was basically everything a fan could want in a game. You could create your own character and got to go on this quest to play side by side with Sonic The game... fumbled. But we don't need to worry about that.
It's got a lot of good concepts but it doesn't feel like it really commits to any of them. It plays it far too safe, and it's extremely clear that there was more they wanted to do with it but didn't for whatever reason. Fortunately we've more or less had a renaissance since then.
@ChazzzyF what confuses me most is the beta dialogue. Some, like the VS. Egg Dragoon fight, have dialogue in the beta that were removed for seemingly no reason, despite making lots of sense for the story. Sonic Forces in general just had a lot of inexperienced developers that really didn't know what they're doing, which is sad because it COULD have been an incredible game
Missed opportunity for him to listen to “Lost Impact” from Shadow the Hedgehog. A very emotional piece that proves that Sonic can really tap into the more somber and tragic nuances when it wants to.
I had absolutely no affinity for Sonic music until Frontiers. The metalcore boss themes, dark ambient open-world and guardian pieces, and driving trance-like Cyber Space sections are all very much my speed. I love the more mature direction they took it. Break Through It All is my favorite boss theme. I hope you get a chance to listen to it.
That's the best part, you can dive in within any part of the Sonic series. Plus music that connects you to it even more. As a long time fan, I love how many genres the series has taken on. I like Marco pointing out that My Destiny is a pure, conventional, beautiful ballad. I remember the composer Mariko Nanba saying that they were aiming for, a classic "masterpiece"/song you think of first when you hear a revered composer's name.
The character themes in Sonic did A LOT for making me fall in love with them as a kid. You would hear the instrumental versions of them throughout cutscenes. Then when you beat the game with each character, their full theme with lyrics would play over the credits and just kinda proudly explain who they are. It always felt so triumphant. Sonic scores are always really smart with leitmotifs.
It's worth pointing out that Michael Jackson worked on some of the tracks for Sonic 3, and most likely did contribute at least something towards Flying Battery Zone. It was one of the zones cut before release of Sonic 3 (it would have been sandwiched between what ended up being the 4th and 5th zone), and the music is the same in the prototype build.
While listening to Unknown from M.E. you asked what Tails' musical theme might be. Sonic Adventure gives a specific character theme to all six of the main characters in it, meaning we have a very direct answer to that question, which has the same context within the game as Knuckles' theme has - Believe In Myself - Sonic Adventure 1 The full list of those from Sonic Adventure 1 are: Sonic's Theme - It Doesn't Matter by Tony Harnell Tails' Theme - Believe in Myself by Karen Blake Knuckles' Theme - Unknown from M.E. by Marion Saunders & Dread Fox Amy's Theme - My Sweet Passion by Nikki Gregoroff Big's Theme - Lazy Days (Livin' in Paradise) by Ted Poley Gamma's Theme - Theme of E-102γ by Jun Senoue & Fumie Kumatani There are new versions of It Doesn't Matter (again by Tony Harnell) and Believe in Myself (This time by Kaz Silver), and Unknown from M.E. Gonna put this at the top so you'll see it but if you want bubbly, look up 'My Sweet Passion' from Sonic Adventure. It's Amy Rose's theme. Rouge's theme from Sonic Adventure theme is also very nice and a bit slower. Find your Flame, and the other boss themes from Frontiers go as hard as they do because you're fighting what's essetially a giant colossus as Super Sonic and to this day I don't think anything from a Sonic game has hit me on that level of just raw excitement. I love the evolution from kinda pop rock-ish happy music from Sonic's previous 3D games to something that's serious and kinda grown up. To me its just nice because I'm not a fan of a character always staying essentially a child while the fanbase around them ages and grows up with this character. I think they're finding a nice balance between keeping Sonic true to himself but still capable to be responsible and serious when things get dangerous in a less cheesy early 2000s kid way. The Frontiers bosses kind of represent that too, to me anyway, because rather than saving Super Sonic for the very very end, we use the Super form EVERY boss fight. It says something about what big of a threat we're facing and that it's time to grow up in a sense.
Sonic colors was the game that made me start to listen to music when going to school, i rememeber blasting the TV volume and recording the sound on my phone with the magnetophone, it was HORRIBLE sound wise but little me was happy coincidently that's also when i started to have a headset ( or earplugs ) whenever i go outisde

Hi Marco! Shadow the Hedghog was introduced in Sonic Adventure 2. The Dr. Robotnik that constantly fights Sonic starts being called Dr. Eggman’s in Sonic Adventure. Shadow was originally created by Dr. Gerald Robotnik, Dr. Eggman’s grandfather, when he was doing research on the ARK. Shadow was created with Black Doom DNA and he was created to be the Ultimate Life-form. Shadow was amazing friends with Maria Robotnik, Gerald Robotnik’s granddaughter and Dr. Eggman’s cousin. Unfortunately, before Shadow was created, Maria was diagnosed with an incurable disease. And 50 years before the events of Sonic Adventure 2, Maria was killed by a G.U.N. Soldier when she was trying to save shadow and send him to earth. Shadow was captured by G.U.N. and was out in something like a cryo-pod and has been kept asleep until Sonic Adventure 2.

You should listen to some Sonic Symphony versions of the vocal songs! They backed up Live and Learn and other songs with a beautiful orchestra there that really elevate the songs, it would be really fun to watch you react to them.

One thing I love about Live and Learn is mostly the context behind it; Live and Learn's melody is EVERYWHERE in SA2's menus (and in a couple level tracks too), but yoh never hear the full song until the very end of the game where the final boss takes place, and it's like the game keeps giving you tastes of what Live and Learn is like, until you actually hear the full song by the end of the game.

Sonic Adventure 2 is really just an amazing anomaly in the franchise.
I just learned something absolutely crazy about Crush 40. They're music is amazing, but ironically it's a miracle their music matches the games so well as apparently their writer actually doesn't even play the games nor does he even see the games as they're being made. He just writes the song based on the story synopsis. That's amazing, it's like how Martin O'Donnell wrote the Halo theme in a car drive to work one day.
That'll be about the singer Johnny Gioelli, right? Who does write a lot of Crush 40's lyrics. That process makes sense to me. But the music has always been written by Jun Senoue, who is an employee of SEGA, so is in the same room as other people making Sonic every weekday. I can't remember if Senoue ever said he's played one of the games, but it must have happened in the past 32 years he's been working there. Maybe he's too busy.

You're on the mark with Egg Dragoon, it's the fight where you can really tell that Eggman's snapped in regards to Sonic, no more platitudes or grandiose presentations to the process, he's simply pulled out a prototype robot specifically engineered to KILL Sonic. It's so serious that even Sonic is telling Eggman to cool it, which is insane to me. They're literally plummeting to the earth's core and all Eggman cares about is killing Sonic, he doesn't even talk smack! It's because of this that Egg Dragoon is still my favorite boss track from all of Sonic, the severity of the situation is unmatched.

All of this. The Egg Dragoon is genuinely my favourite non-Super fight in the series because of the sheer intensity from a plot standpoint, and also Unleashed music is SO GOOD. The fight after this is arguably even more important, since it's for the fate of the world, and the orchestra certainly makes that obvious musically. But in that fight you're playing as Super Sonic with the Gaia Colossus as backup; the Egg Dragoon boss track is just so damn personal, a fight that might genuinely kill Sonic or Eggman in the end.
Egg Dragoon is one of my top favorite moments in Sonic history. For the first time ever between Eggman and Sonic, it felt like "all bets are off, this is going to be our FINAL confontation". Sure, more games happened afterward; but this song really hammered home the feeling of NOW OR NEVER.

Live and Learn has the distinction of being arguably the most iconic Sonic song EVER. So popular they play it at the end of every single concert they do. The band that performed it, most consistently the vocalist, Johnny Gioeli, and guitarist Jun Senoue (Who is also the lead composer for the many Sonic games, including Adventure 1 and 2), are legends.

33:58 : Knuckles is connected to this slower Rap and R&B for a few reasons: Firstly, Knuckles is a intentional contrast to Sonic: He's an Echidna (another spikey mammal) rather then a Hedgehog, he's red to Sonic's blue, he's power/strength to Sonic's speed, he's got a moon crescent on his chest vs Sonic's "sun" circle, and to tie into the next point, he's introspective and tied to his past/ancestry wheras Sonic is a free-spirit always doing things without second guessing himself. So the musical genre reflects that personality difference. Knuckles, within the story/lore of the games, is one of the last surviving Echidna, which are characterized as a sort of Mesoamerican (particularly Mayan) ancient race that worshiped the Chaos emeralds, particularly a large central one known as the Master Emerald, and Knuckles sees it as his duty to guard the Master Emerald and the ruins around it not even knowing why or what his origins are.
Sonic Adventure 1, the game this theme comes from (though a remix is also in SA2) is actually all about that Ancient Echidna race, and this early into the series, Knuckles was still more of a situational ally or neutral party then a core part of the hero team, and was primarily devoted to guarding the Emerald more then saving the world. So Knuckles theme in SA1 being a slower, and more "ethnic" track is tied into those narrative and character traits of him questioning his purpose and heritage, and you can obviously hear a lot of what I've mentioned in the lyrics.
Finally, and to connect to my point about the ethnic, African american connotations those musical genres are tied to, is that Knuckles was also kinda coded as a Black character: In Sonic Adventure the Echidna are Indigenous, as I said, but Knuckles as originally designed a few titles earlier in the series was intended to Black Caribbean theme: His spines look like hair deads, his shoes have a raasta color scheme, some marketing materials have him speaking in a Jamaican accent (tho that was abandoned), and in both Adventure games a lot of the music associated with him is Hip Hop or R&B.
Other people have mentioned this to you, i'm sure, but in Sonic Adventure 2 in particular, the music for each character's playable levels (not just their main vocal themes, Unknown from ME is of course Knuckle's Vocal theme for both games, each character's theme is similarly a musical and lyrical encapsulation of that character's while vibe and personality) have music in different genres which reflect the characters (unlike in SA1, where characters shared stages so they couldn't be musically tuned to different characters). I'm not a big music person so I'm maybe butchering the exact genres and subgenres here, but Sonic has the quick, fun rock tracks you'd expect, Shadow has a more industrial, grungy set of rock tracks with vaugely emo vocals that's hard to make out, Knuckles has, as i've said, rap and R&B, Rouge (the bat, a sort of catwoman, femme fatal spy/thief character) has jazz and bossa nova, Tails (who in SA2 is in a mech) has more electronic sounding rock with synth elements, and Eggman like tails has more electronic or synth heavy rock, but with more mechanical and industrial (in a literal, not just a musical) sounds and tones, with clanks and grinding etc.

Uknown from M.E. being compared to a Greek Chorus is something I never considered before, but I do love that comparison. The song is indeed meant to be more blunt and kind of forceful more than Sonic is, since a lot of the lyrics are entirely literal towards Knuckles' story and character, and he indeed can be described like the song itself. Loud and a bit foolhardy, a bit boastful, but also serene and wistful during the R&B sections. It kind of feels like he wrote the song himself in that regard, and I like when character themes reflect their subject matter like that.
especially since if there's three traits to describe knuckles, they'd be stubborn, naive, and _straightforward._ he's the exact type to not only have to take a moment to parse figurative language and symbolism, but also to react _before_ he's put the piece together. and, appropriately ... unknown from M.E. is basically almost entirely literal exposition, dotted with some basic similes and like a _single_ metaphor. it is entirely upfront, entirely earnest, and puts basically all its creative language into hyping up knuckles's strength. which is _extremely_ on the nose, but, hey, knuckles is an extremely on the nose dude

Yes, the Sonic & Knuckles Flying Battery Zone Act 2 is on the Sega Genesis in 1994 on its 1988 sound hardware including the Yamaha YM2612 OPN2 FM synthesis chip, configured here for 5x 4-operator FM voices, plus drum sample playback (instead of a 6th FM voice).
It is in fact the only track here to be generated on-console from sequencing data (whereas all the others are recorded music tracks from newer consoles). Funnily enough, it was the same in the first part, but the track was from Mystic Cave Zone from Sonic 2 (1992).
I like how you pointed out that open your heart was mature, the whole city gets flooded in the final story of Sonic Adventure 1 and I'm pretty sure everyone who were in the buildings are dead, it's a pretty dark thought.
It was actually confirmed by Sega that everyone in Station Square was conveniently able to evacuate as Perfect Chaos attacked, which, to me, feels like a cop-out and kind of lessens the blow of the whole flood if the only consequence was just property damage. Not to mention, it doesn't make much sense since the flood happened so suddenly, so how did anyone have that much time to escape?

When I was a kid, I thought 'Flying Battery' meant it was a mobile Battery for his forces, but I'm relatively sure now it's a 'Battery' of cannons. A flying fortification. Also, my favorite Sonic theme, along with Sky Sanctuary from the same era/game. On a side note, while Sonic Adventure is regarded as the first 3D Sonic, Sonic 3D Blast was actually the first, having come out 2 years earlier.

Blast isn't really 3D. It's just isometric and using shading similar to Donkey Kong Country, not actual 3D. Technically Sonic R or Sonic Jam was the first 3D game as they both used actual polies. But Jam was just for the level select. Even Sonic the Fighters was real 3D, though it's not really an actual Sonic game.

@@TheHouseofIvo not particularly, sonic 3d blast very much is just 2d sprites over a 2d background that fakes a degree of depth using a projection method that's been around since the eighteenth century at least, and has been used by video games as early on as q'bert back in 1982. the one thing 3d blast has going for it in terms of selling the illusion further is the amount of rotations sonic has ... as well as the stiff, lifeless posing in his animations that really sells the 90s cgi look, for better or worse
it's one of those things you notice p. quickly when you realize that all those checkerboard squares on the ground are the exact same size and orientation regardless of where they are on screen, and how sonic doesn't grow in size as he jumps towards the camera and then shrink back down as he falls, which ... isn't how perspective works, at all

11:50 : Shadow is Sonic most iconic rival, from full antagonist working for Eggman to little by little as games advance into some frenemies. Like Shadow is grumpy as a rule and finds Sonic attitude really annoying. He'll try to do everything by himself, is really proud of who he is, and because of trauma, tend to push away people fearing to feel loss again.
But when the chips are on the table, man oh man Shadow is probably Sonic strongest ally, and one of the four characters that have a canonical seven emerald super form.

The way you're able to pick up on so much about the context of each piece from the music alone is incredible. Even being able to identify a character customization theme as being about "suiting up," as you put it. Stunning!
I love watching you go on this journey. I've been a Sonic fan since I was 3 years old and the series has had so many ups and downs but the music has always been constantly good. It also feels really good to see the series bigger than its ever been and actually thriving.
Live and Learn is such an iconic track for the series, it's kind of transcended its own game to become a sort of anthem for all Sonic products. Whenever Sonic was added to Super Smash Bros. for the first time, Live and Learn was the track used to represent him.
Egg Dragon is probably my favorite Eggman Boss theme.
It really sells you on just how insane Eggman really is and how threatening his Machines can be, if he really tries he can cook up some terrifying metal monstrositys.
Afterall he is the E.G.G.M.A.N. he has the Masterplan.

These Sonic OST reactions have been an absolute delight. As a lifelong Sonic fan around your age, it's fascinating seeing someone approach the music from this series with no prior knowledge and and enjoy it so much! I have just about zero understanding of music theory or any of the technical stuff behind how music 'works', but when you use your musical background to put into words all the very deliberate choices that were made in crafting these OSTs and the feelings and information they convey to the listener, I find myself nodding along every time because yes! That's exactly it! It really shows the power of music, that many others like myself understood the messages the OSTs were sending us without knowing exactly why. Your descriptions of each character's soundscapes and musical identities were eye opening - especially the way you described Shadow without knowing who he was yet! Even though I've loved Sonic music since the Genesis era, I'm still learning and noticing new things about each track through your more educated observations.
I hope you're enjoying delving into the Sonic universe as a whole, music and games and all, and don't get too overwhelmed by the intensity of the fanbase when it comes to either reaction/gameplay requests or backseating. There's probably a well-intentioned element of 'oh, we need him to know how to play the game right, in case he ends up not enjoying it to its full potential!' in there that easily becomes overbearing. From the OST and Generations videos so far it really feels like you've tapped into the soul of the Sonic franchise and the way audiences have understood and grown attached to the characters over the years. Hopefully you keep having fun with it! Looking forward to seeing you finish up Shadow Generations~

The remixes throughout the soundtrack are insane. Deep, melodic, intense, beautiful, and catchy. You cannot help, but want to turn the volume up. It is so good
something worth note is the main game themes of the 3d sonic games also have a habbit of often being the final boss theme and the theme of the villain. more often than not its a duality, it can be about sonic or the villain or both at once. live and learn, open your heart, ect so it helps to analyze them both as main game themes and climactic battle themes
Unknown from M.E. is what got me into playing Adventure 1 on PC like two years ago. I love Knuckles and how serious he was back then, even if it wasn't that much serious. I'm glad they're trying to get my boy back to his glory nowadays.
I am glad that you made the Journey comparison to Crush 40 because that is not a coincidence (although they couldn't any more different). Before Crush 40, Johnny Gioeli was in a hard rock band called Hardline, who he sings for to this day. The band featured Neal Schon, the founder and guitarist of Journey, and Deen Castronovo, the drummer for Wild Dogs and Bad English (the latter whom Schon also played for), who eventually joined Journey. If I recall correctly, Gioeli has once or is still is married to Schon's sister.
If you want to know more about who Shadow is, Sonic x Shadow Generations has an option on the main menu "Shadow's Story" that gives a good short summary.

You enjoying Elise's theme so much, there's another somewhat similar song from Frontiers called "Dear Father" and not going to lie: it's a heartbreaking song and may hit you particularly hard due to the subject matter. Sonic Frontiers has a lot of "Father" theming it regarding Eggman and an AI creation of his with the song sung from the AI's perspective. There's another song sung in the AI's perspective that's considered a "true ending" called "I'm With You" and is still about Eggman with a completely different just as sweet theme to it. Both these songs hit hard but I feel Dear Father would definitely hit you harder. Another song not from Frontiers that has a very similar beat is called "Dear My Friend" but of course comes from a friendship perspective. Sonic really do got them absolutely emotional smacks in the faces sometimes.

Sonic Forces was basically everything a fan could want in a game. You could create your own character and got to go on this quest to play side by side with Sonic

@ChazzzyF what confuses me most is the beta dialogue. Some, like the VS. Egg Dragoon fight, have dialogue in the beta that were removed for seemingly no reason, despite making lots of sense for the story. Sonic Forces in general just had a lot of inexperienced developers that really didn't know what they're doing, which is sad because it COULD have been an incredible game
Missed opportunity for him to listen to “Lost Impact” from Shadow the Hedgehog. A very emotional piece that proves that Sonic can really tap into the more somber and tragic nuances when it wants to.
Since the first video, I was counting minutes to see the reaction with any Knuckles music and, yeap, the reaction was exactly as expected =D
I had absolutely no affinity for Sonic music until Frontiers. The metalcore boss themes, dark ambient open-world and guardian pieces, and driving trance-like Cyber Space sections are all very much my speed. I love the more mature direction they took it. Break Through It All is my favorite boss theme. I hope you get a chance to listen to it.

I like Marco pointing out that My Destiny is a pure, conventional, beautiful ballad. I remember the composer Mariko Nanba saying that they were aiming for, a classic "masterpiece"/song you think of first when you hear a revered composer's name.
The character themes in Sonic did A LOT for making me fall in love with them as a kid. You would hear the instrumental versions of them throughout cutscenes. Then when you beat the game with each character, their full theme with lyrics would play over the credits and just kinda proudly explain who they are. It always felt so triumphant.
Sonic scores are always really smart with leitmotifs.
15:31 sonic 3& knuckles had the most advanced sounding songs, because they used literally every OUNCE of power they could've out of that sound chip
It's worth pointing out that Michael Jackson worked on some of the tracks for Sonic 3, and most likely did contribute at least something towards Flying Battery Zone. It was one of the zones cut before release of Sonic 3 (it would have been sandwiched between what ended up being the 4th and 5th zone), and the music is the same in the prototype build.
While listening to Unknown from M.E. you asked what Tails' musical theme might be. Sonic Adventure gives a specific character theme to all six of the main characters in it, meaning we have a very direct answer to that question, which has the same context within the game as Knuckles' theme has - Believe In Myself - Sonic Adventure 1

I am so excited to see your journey into sonic, Marco. As someone who's been a sonic fan literally my whole life - sonic 2 was my first video game ever - its so cool to see someone else learning to love it.
Absolutely wonderful stuff. You couldn't pick a better franchise to analyse music from, man. Though are any other classic Sonic players finding themselves let down that whoever did the footage for Flying Battery didn't get the hidden 1-up in the ceiling after the fire shield?
The sonic forces song you listened to is the theme that plays while you're looking at the map, its literally just menu music, it gets so stuck in my head from how many times Ive heard it repeat, lol

Gonna put this at the top so you'll see it but if you want bubbly, look up 'My Sweet Passion' from Sonic Adventure. It's Amy Rose's theme. Rouge's theme from Sonic Adventure theme is also very nice and a bit slower.
Find your Flame, and the other boss themes from Frontiers go as hard as they do because you're fighting what's essetially a giant colossus as Super Sonic and to this day I don't think anything from a Sonic game has hit me on that level of just raw excitement. I love the evolution from kinda pop rock-ish happy music from Sonic's previous 3D games to something that's serious and kinda grown up. To me its just nice because I'm not a fan of a character always staying essentially a child while the fanbase around them ages and grows up with this character. I think they're finding a nice balance between keeping Sonic true to himself but still capable to be responsible and serious when things get dangerous in a less cheesy early 2000s kid way. The Frontiers bosses kind of represent that too, to me anyway, because rather than saving Super Sonic for the very very end, we use the Super form EVERY boss fight. It says something about what big of a threat we're facing and that it's time to grow up in a sense.
Sonic colors was the game that made me start to listen to music when going to school, i rememeber blasting the TV volume and recording the sound on my phone with the magnetophone, it was HORRIBLE sound wise but little me was happy

If you want more fun/ happy sonic songs I recommend the sonic runners ost, it's pretty underrated (because the game was underrated) but I think you'll like it.
Seeing your reaction to Unknown from M.E. was priceless! I had a similar reaction. At every turn it makes you pause and think, "WTF IS GOING ON?" but in the best way imaginable. Unbelievably groovy and dynamic, definitely one of my all time favorite Sonic songs.
Hi Marco! Shadow the Hedghog was introduced in Sonic Adventure 2. The Dr. Robotnik that constantly fights Sonic starts being called Dr. Eggman’s in Sonic Adventure. Shadow was originally created by Dr. Gerald Robotnik, Dr. Eggman’s grandfather, when he was doing research on the ARK. Shadow was created with Black Doom DNA and he was created to be the Ultimate Life-form. Shadow was amazing friends with Maria Robotnik, Gerald Robotnik’s granddaughter and Dr. Eggman’s cousin. Unfortunately, before Shadow was created, Maria was diagnosed with an incurable disease. And 50 years before the events of Sonic Adventure 2, Maria was killed by a G.U.N. Soldier when she was trying to save shadow and send him to earth. Shadow was captured by G.U.N. and was out in something like a cryo-pod and has been kept asleep until Sonic Adventure 2.

Absolutely loved hearing your thoughts on the guitar harmonies in Live & Learn! The Sonic Adventure series was a huge musical influence on me growing up, so it's great to think more critically about how these songs are constructed alongside you ☺
You should listen to some Sonic Symphony versions of the vocal songs! They backed up Live and Learn and other songs with a beautiful orchestra there that really elevate the songs, it would be really fun to watch you react to them.
You describing the Egg Dragoon boss music as "You can hear the dragon" was something I had never even considered before, and after that I started hearing all the different phases in the fight as it continued!
That is so fascinating and I've been listening to Sonic music for well over a decade now :D
