I… I want him to listen to the sonic heroes beta theme… not in a serious manor or anything, just for all the potential laughs I would have at his reaction to it…
Fun fact: the Sega Genesis sounds so unique because it uses a totally different kind of synthesizer. It uses Frequency Modulation (FM) synthesis, where you take two different waveforms and sort of mash them together to make something new. As opposed to a more standard synth, which uses a single waveform and manipulates the sound in various ways. It’s been a minute since I _really_ cared about this sort of thing, so I’m probably missing some details, but it’s a neat detail that’s really noticeable if you know what’s up.
You're pretty much correct. The MD/Gen soundchip used FM Synthesis, and it also had a PSG (which is a 'beeper', similar to what the original NES used) -- The best OSTs use the FM Synth and the PSG in tandem. The 32x added a wavetable chip (similar to what the SNES had, although a lot more limited to save on cost, since it never had to be the _only_ source of sound in the console) to the mix, and you can hear the combination of FM+PSG+Wavetable beautifully on the Knuckles Chaotix track Marco played. The catch with this kind of sound synthesis technique is that it's _hard_ -- Whereas the SNES used samples of actual instruments to construct a sequenced track, on the Genesis the artists basically had to _construct_ the waveforms out of complex mathematical parameters before they could even start thinking of making music with them, and while you can get _amazing_ sound out of it if you know what you're doing, it is much more common to get _bad_ sound -- Which is why a lot of Shovelware titles from the time period sound okay-ish on the SNES, but sound like farts on the Genny Drive.
@@SomeBlokeOrWhatever Correct me if I'm wrong, but it was mostly american composers that had trouble with the Genesis' FM synth, because it was completely different from the NES sound chip they got so used to, and FM synth was only really used in Arcade games, but in Japan, FM Synth was very popular, Arcade games used it, the Master System had a FM Synth add-on, the PC-88 and PC-98 had FM Synth as their standard way of producing audio, etc., the only problem I have is explaining how european composers got so good at it, Jesper Kyd was a FM Synth _god,_ his compositions on the Genesis are legendary, and that's just one example. And before someone mentions it, the GEMS sound driver was good, it's just that the vast majority of american composers didn't bother learning it, or didn't have enough time to do so, there are a lot of games that made excellent use of it, Comix Zone, Kid Chameleon, The Ooze, Vectorman, X-Men 2: Clone Wars, Sonic Spinball and Earthworm Jim are just some examples. If you wanted gritty audio on the Genesis, GEMS was _the_ way to go.
@ Yeah, that basically describes my limited experience with FM. You _really_ have to know what you’re doing to make something that sounds good, but the sounds it creates are very unique. Thanks for the more informed breakdown :)
A lot of modern EDM still uses FM as well. It really adds an extra touch that makes sounds feel more "full", in a way. I use a synth called Vital and managed to create a lead with a macro knob that can add more/less FM, and it's a neat thing to automate to make the synth transition from "calm" to "intense".
Something I think would be worth it if you react to more songs from Sonic CD (specifically the JP soundtrack for it)-every stage has a past, present, bad future, and good future mix that dynamically changes depending on what time period you're in, since the game has a time travel element. Would be interesting to see a video examining the way they play with the different time periods in the OST
Second attempt at recommending E-102γ's theme from Sonic Adventure 1. It's a genuinely amazing song, and when combined with Crazy Robo (E-101β) and Unbound creates a short yet engaging story, which is very accurate for E-102γ's actual in-game story.
Yessss! I’ve been posting comments on each of his sonic videos BEGGING for whoever puts these lists together to pass Gamma’s theme to him. It’s just… it’s the first sonic track I think of when I think “sonic songs that tell a story”.
sonic music is literally the definition of "vibe" for me, every music is amazing but when you understand the context of the level or hub it becomes incredibly charming, even the strangest ones nad always puts me on good mood :>
18:35 i believe this has always been sonics intention, on the japanese box arts of the first 4 games there are inspirational quotes on them telling you to live life to your fullest or be the best person you can be written in english.
You should listen to the absolute meme that is Sonic heroes Team Chaotix theme. You can FEEL the people writing and singing it were having the time of their lives with it.
I love how Tomoya Ohtani has become one of your favorite composers period, and you might not even know it (I don't know if you looked up composer credits for each song). Basically every song in this series that has "passed your vibe check" was one of his, but he can quite literally do any type of music justice. He has mastered everything.
I don't blame you at all for being that hooked on Sonic music, this franchise really has that effect. First half of 2024 I was addicted to Sonic CD ost and the 2nd half I couldn't stop listening to Sonic R as well. What an amazing franchise. 🧡
Sonic Unleashed/Sonic Colors are my core childhood games, insanely beautiful OSTs 🥹, really brings back memories of simpler times! Sonic unleashed's day and night overworld themes are all so so good
i used to sit in front of my tv for hours on end just listening to all the music in sonic heroes, all the way up until i was 12 years before my ps2 slim finally died on me (i started playing that game when i was 4 years old)
A lot of Sonic's music has followed popular trends, and the early games are a reflection of 80s styles. The Starlight theme reminds me a lot of Debbie Gibson
Secret Rings is an overlooked game in general, but it genuinely has an incredible soundtrack. The list may be short, but the amount of absolute bangers in it is unreal. Unawakening Float, The White of Sky, The Palace That Was Found, No Way Through, Let The Speed Mend It, High and Broken, How It Started, Poison Spear, Blue On The Run... hell, Seven Rings in Hand might be my favourite vocal Sonic song. If not, it's definitely up there.
I wish more people suggested Sonic Adventure 1 tunes. Everybody always goes for vocal songs and many of the songs on that one, it's true, suffer because the vocals feel so awkward on the character themes, but the instrumentals that make up the rest of the soundtrack are really what captured me as a kid. It's not even all just rock by a long shot, it's got lots of variety, although most of it is given a glaze of rock music in the bass and drums just because that was Jun Senoue's passion. And I mean, even the rock songs and his rhythm guitar and riffs.... Wahaha. That soundtrack and the F Zero X one were my gateways to rock music which before I just felt sounded too "dangerous." Even my dad wanted to know who was playing guitar on the Hot Shelter song 😂 and he also got me a drum kit and lessons because of how enamored I was with both of them. That started my musical journey which is still going strong today
I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR MOOORE ESPECIALLY AQUARIUM PARK AND LET THE SPEED MEND IT :DD Fantastic pics once more! Glad you got more campy Sonic with the Heroes theme too heck yeah
you're not at all overthinking sonic when you're talking about starlight zone. he's a fairy, he's the wind, he's freedom, the present, he's a happy memory that keeps you going
"Keys the Ruin" from Sonic Adventure 2 is a good song. "Dr. Eggman Showdown" from Sonic Lost World is an interesting mix of guitar and violin. "His World" from Sonic '06, specifically the (Zebrahead Version) is pretty good.
Another amazing reaction video lets gooooo !!! I have some song suggestions for future Sonic music videos: - Wave Ocean -The Water's Edge- Sonic 06 - Crisis City -The Flame-Skyscraper-Whirlwind-Tornado- Sonic 06 - Dreams of an Absolution (Theme of Silver) - Sonic 06 - Back 2 Back - Sonic Rush - What U Need - Sonic Rush - Jeh Jeh Rocket - Sonic Rush - Cyber Space 1-2: Flowing - Sonic Frontiers - Cyber Space 2-4: Hype Street - Sonic Frontiers - Cyber Space 2-5: Déjà vu - Sonic Frontiers - Cyber Space 4-8: No Pain, No Gain - Sonic Frontiers - Cyber Space 4-F: Hype Street Remix - Sonic Frontiers - Sonic Frontiers & ONE OK ROCK - "Vandalize"
We'll keep recommending more to you, I hope one day we get to see the full 30th Anniversary Symphony as a stream vod, every time I watch it I end up smiling, singing or just listening to all the music throughout the decades. It was the perfect birthday gift for the franchise, letting us hear what they do best.
What you said about connecting to the audience with your music is so on the money, it's scary. I am a composer myself, and I always try and think about what kind of emotion I want to convey. Now, if I succeed in creating a specific response in the listener or not, is not under my control (death of the author and all that), but as long as the listener feels ANYTHING, I consider it a success. The worst thing that could happen to me as a composer is if my pieces don't move you at all.
I'm so glad you reacted to a Knucles's Chaotix track. I get why the game isn't very popular but I really think its soundtrack is one of the most interesting and inspiring of all sonic game soundtrack
If I may suggest ‘The World Adventure’ from Sonic Unleashed. I remember in one of your streams, you gave a prompt for something akin to classical orchestra and this track is about as close to that as you could get from this franchise. (Unleashed is also one of my favourites so I might be biased lol)
You should listen to Sonic Adventure 1 songs. It will really give those early Sega Blue Sky aesthetic feels. My favorites are sonics theme, tails theme (I wanna Fly High), open your heart, and E-102 gama's theme
Sonic Heroes as a game is just the epitome of Saturday morning cartoon cheese and it owns it in every way possible. The final boss theme is another banger, way better than the main theme imo, and each of the 3 character teams in the game have their own themes worth checking out too.
For Sonic and the Secret Rings, you must listen to "Awakening Float" and "High and Broken". The whole OST has it's worth as all sonic games, but those two are really a level above.
Praise be to the algorithm. So glad I found this page, Its great seeing someone find joy on something you've loved all your life. Plus it's also a good excuse to listen to these tracks again lol. Ps every track on sonic r needs listening to eventually. No rhyme or reason a sound track from the 90s should be so amazing
it would be a bit of a change of pace, but i would absolutely love to hear your reactions to limbus company music! specifically the ones that Mili has made, and if i had to throw out names i would say “fly broken wings” and “hero” are ones you would enjoy. the rest of the mili tracks tend to be grittier than the rest of what you cover on your channel, so it’s totally up to you if you want to check those out too!
A perfect progression from chill music to the ride of your life. Obviously appreciate all the insight too Marco... I better not start thinking about Sonic music only in opera terms!
As someone who's been a Sonic fan and adored the series' music ever since I was a child, your videos have given me a much greater appreciation for Sonic music than I had before... and my appreciation of it was already really great! I'm not a music professional, so I always find it interesting to hear a professional's perspective on the music. It gives me more of an appreciation for the art that goes into making these soundtracks.
Hi marco, I'd love to share my list of sonic songs for you to listen: Ares Island 6ht Mvt. - Sonic Frontiers Rail Canyon - Sonic Heroes Flame Core (Volcano) - Sonic 06 Deep Woods - Sonic And The Black Knight Keys The Ruin - Sonic Adventure 2 Sand Sanctuary - Sonic Superstars Boo's House - Team Sonic Racing Follow Me - Sonic Heroes Action Chain - Sonic Frontiers
What I love about the Sonic Heroes theme is that it just straight up sounds like the theme to a Saturday morning cartoon from the 80s-90s. Like it's just describing the feeling of the story's theme to a cheesy theme song. The theme songs for the game's teams (you play as teams of 3, instead of individual characters) are even moreso, because they have the same vibe, but the lyrics more directly describe the characters and their dynamics. So think like a Sonic version of the TMNT theme or something like that.
Dear Marco, I’m hugely thankful for your videos hearing and analyzing Sonic music! Because of your incredible work as an artist communicator, I discovered how absolutely amazingly phenomenal are Sonic soundtracks! Because of you now I have a playlist consisting only of Sonic stages themes!!! _(And also because of you now the love towards this franchise arouse after a pretty long time and I completed Sonic 3, a game soundtrack that I beg you, respitefully of course, to analyze with someone, like you did with Sonic 2!)_ And, since I’m an amateur musician, I also have to praise you for your musical and artistic analysis! You do an amazing job simplifying music theory (something that I unfortunately know almost nothing about) in a way that is extremely understandable for non-musicians and amateurs like me!
Marco, I reckon for Sonic Colours it would be a great idea to listen to all three acts in a row! Hearing the changes happening to a base track is fantastic, especially for worlds like Planet Wisp and Sweet Mountain. Planet Wisp in particular, with the story it tells as the track changes.
Aquarium park ACT 1 was one if not THE first music i listened to when going to school whe ni was younger, remember loading the game up and starting the stage and putting my phone next to the speakers to record the music
I was going crazy knowing for sure I had heard these reactions already til I remembered at the end of the video I watched the livestream of the recording
Apparently the lyrics 'Sonic Heroes' were the first lyrics of the Sonic Heroes theme song Crush 40 worked out (big shocker). There's a video on youtube of a prototype of the Sonic Heroes opening cinematic where most of the music is just the singer humming to the pace and tone he sings the final version.
Awesome vid as always! If you wanna check out more italian inspired video game music, I'd recommend checking out the "Enotria the Last Song" soundtrack. Keep up these vids cause I frickin love them!
The best/funniest part about the Sonic Heroes theme is that no matter what now that you've heard it you'll never forget it It's just one of those earworm songs that sticks in your mind regardless of how you feel about it lol
awesome you keep listening to sonic tracks, I hope you keep going, there's so much left for more Unleashed and Colors stuff, give a try to: Unleashed: Cool edge - night Colors: Nega wisp Armor phase 2
Now i know you’ve listened to quarts quadrants present song but PLEASE listen to the good future version, specifically the jp version like you did with this one, and if you could, please listen to metallic madness good future jp too
Man I can't wait till you get into Sonic CD and the soundtrack for Sonic Heroes proper. Such amazing musical contributions. But I could say that for almost any game in some capacity.
18:40 In my opinion, Sonic is a force of nature, he is an entity of nature that is inexplicable, he exists and no one can explain why. That's why Sonic is my favorite character.
"Leaving the City" is such a casualified version of "City Escape" that I can't help but love it. Sounds very google translate lyrics. So a strong contender for my favorite sonic track, which I don't THINK you've reacted to and haven't seen recommended, is "Supporting Me" from Sonic Adventure 2 Battle. It's a banger on it's own, but also a track that heavily benefits from the context of when it plays in game. And it just so happens that Sonic Adventure 2 Battle is the sonic game I'd recommend the most for you to play. For all of it's weird flaws, it's a really fun game that I think holds up surprisingly well.
For the future I'd really recommend you to listen Rhea Island theme from Sonic Frontiers. There's only that much music that can make you feel the way this one does
sonic's got a lot of awesome music, but you should listen to midnight owl and owl lights whenever you can! i recently heard them and i feel like you're gonna love them (they're technically the same song but they're arranged very differently and i got very excited telling my friend just how beautiful they are)
Ah yes, my favourite Sonic channel. 😂 That Star Light zone theme always felt like finally getting a full breath of fresh nighttime air after the dreadful and damp labyrinth zone. 🥶
One song I started listening to recently was “Without you” from the Sonic x Shadow generations game. Was one of those songs that popped up randomly on my yt recommendations that I ended up liking.
Still on my hands and knees begging to see Marco react to I Am... All Of Me from Shadow thr Hedgehog
Im pretty sure he did in the shadow generations playthrough
He heard it when he watched the cutscenes for the game and saw the opening
sonic unleashed might have my favorite soundtrack from any sonic game, theres so much variety n its all so good.

18:45 no no keep going Sonic has so many good themes to breakdown and analyse 👀💙💙💙
Thank you very much
Man please do E.G.G.M.A.N. the song encapsulates everything that is Eggman...
Well before he build himself a family.
STILL NOTHING FROM SONIC RUSH
who the hell is sending Marco these tracks
Hi marco, I'd love to share my list of sonic songs for you to listen:
Ares Island 6ht Mvt. - Sonic Frontiers
Rail Canyon - Sonic Heroes
Flame Core (Volcano) - Sonic 06
Deep Woods - Sonic And The Black Knight
Keys The Ruin - Sonic Adventure 2
Sand Sanctuary - Sonic Superstars
Boo's House - Team Sonic Racing
Follow Me - Sonic Heroes
Action Chain - Sonic Frontiers
The happiness this brings me is crazy
You thought im with you was good? Listen to “without you”
Being able to see you experience all of this amazing sonic music has made me very happy!
I was going crazy knowing for sure I had heard these reactions already til I remembered at the end of the video I watched the livestream of the recording
I'm patiently waiting for the reaction to the Infinite's theme! Amazing to hear more Sonic music.
For a cool Secret Rings song, I recommend High and Broken
Apparently the lyrics 'Sonic Heroes' were the first lyrics of the Sonic Heroes theme song Crush 40 worked out (big shocker). There's a video on youtube of a prototype of the Sonic Heroes opening cinematic where most of the music is just the singer humming to the pace and tone he sings the final version.
Great thing about Sonic Heroes is that each team has their own theme and Team Dark and Team Chaotix's themes are so damn GOOD!
DON'T KNOW HOW LONG WE'VE WAITED
AS THE EGGMAN WATCHES
@@lindholmaren WE ALL DANCED IN FIRE,
LOOKING THRU THE SCREEN
Dangit, was hoping to see the werehog battle theme lol
Do you think you'll listen to the Sonic Symphony some day with us? 2 hours of stream time sounds pretty nice lol
Absolutely just want to clear more so it’s more impactful for me
Awesome vid as always! If you wanna check out more italian inspired video game music, I'd recommend checking out the "Enotria the Last Song" soundtrack. Keep up these vids cause I frickin love them!
30:38 Marco really said: “Not my tempo”
Lmao speed
The best/funniest part about the Sonic Heroes theme is that no matter what now that you've heard it you'll never forget it
It's just one of those earworm songs that sticks in your mind regardless of how you feel about it lol
Listen to the team themes in sonic heroes, my favorite is follow me and we can
awesome you keep listening to sonic tracks, I hope you keep going, there's so much left
for more Unleashed and Colors stuff, give a try to:
Unleashed: Cool edge - night
Colors: Nega wisp Armor phase 2
4:40 your my number one is my number one love song
I would 100% recommend "Final Fever Zone" JP/EU from Sonic CD, because it includes more of that orchestral/ opera like feel to it
Now i know you’ve listened to quarts quadrants present song but PLEASE listen to the good future version, specifically the jp version like you did with this one, and if you could, please listen to metallic madness good future jp too
Starlight and Sky chase zone are really a mood with those peace vibes
I cant believe you havent heard these before
Crazy I know
@MarcoMeatball I'm glad you enjoyed them!
Man I can't wait till you get into Sonic CD and the soundtrack for Sonic Heroes proper. Such amazing musical contributions. But I could say that for almost any game in some capacity.
Lots of Peaceful Melodies in this playlist, my all time favorite is the Pokke Village theme.
Unleashed was the last big budget game and it shows
Yeah Sega really wanted it to feel like a movie
That Star Light zone theme always felt like finally getting a full breath of fresh nighttime air after the dreadful and damp labyrinth zone. 🥶
If you liked the Sonic R tracks, you should hear a game with a vocal song that came even earlier, Sonic 3D Blast - You're My Hero
One song I started listening to recently was “Without you” from the Sonic x Shadow generations game.
Was one of those songs that popped up randomly on my yt recommendations that I ended up liking.
I recently discovered spagonia hub night aswell, and i have been listening to it non stop
